I noticed this morning while driving through Berkeley that the carpool lane said you needed a "minimum of 3 passengers" instead of the normal 2 and that the hours were 6AM-10AM instead of 6AM-9AM.

Does this stuff vary by city/county? I just happened to glance at it this morning and luckily pulled out of the lane before anyone noticed.

hours vary from place to place, AFAIK most of the carpool lanes near the east end of the bay bridge are 3 passenger.

Carpool is run by the feds and that stretch of 80 up to the toll plaza is 3 people unless you are a motorcycle or a two seater. You didn't need to get out of the lane, I hope you didn't pay the toll either.

You think that's bad, go to So. Cal. Some of their carpool lanes are 24/7.

Berkeley isn't the biggest carpool asshat in the state. :x

I used to think it was unfair that the I-80 corridor between Hercules and the Bay Bridge was a 3-occupants-per-(4-wheel)-vehicle HOV lane rule.

But then I came across this report (http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:AuzR_p0-iHUJ:www.mtc.ca.gov/library/state_of_the_system/2006/carpool_lane_usage.pdf). Who'd a-thunk that more than 3.5 million vehicles, which is three times the number of vehicles that other Bay Area HOV lanes carry, annually traverse WB I-80?

Just Hwy 80... AFAIK all BATA bridges are 3 for a carpool.

Nope.

Marin, the South Bay, and the San Mateo Bridge (don't remember Dumbarton) have 2-person occupancy HOV lanes.

2 person HOV lane just seems like a pointless idea to me. how does two passengers equal "High Occupancy Vehicle" and its far from carpooling.

considering 90+% of the people i see down here are solo, it's a large improvement.

Dumbarton is 2-person with a car-pool-only lane. Outside of car-pool hours, that lane is closed.

It is like that from the Bay Bridge up to the Carquinez Bridge. I believe that is the only place the the 3-6AM - 10AM Carpool in the Bay Area.

I like the motorcycle lanes. Too bad they allow carpools in them.
