I have a scheduled police ride along scheduled with the Citrus Heights PD on monday, the 18th, at 14:00

Just wondering what the process usually is, like what to expect will i get a 1 hour talkin to or somethin before we go out. Plus what are some things that have bugged you on a ride along...so I dont do or say something stupid that makes the officer :rolleyes or :wtf:mad

its a really small PD, but you know.. dont wanna that one dumb guy:teeth

just ask the officer you are riding with what he expects you to do, some will let you get out and observe some may want you to stay in the car and not move. Also know that if a serious call comes in they might drop you off on a corner and get some1 not going to the call to pick you up.
btw: what was the procedure in getting ride-along? that would be pretty cool.

I'm no LEO, but I have been on few ride a longs, one with CHP and a couple with local PDs. Mainly just do what they say in terms of whether or not to get out of the car on a traffic stop or whatnot.. and if they're are talking on the radio don't talk to them until they are done.. other than I don't have alot to say except I think it's super fun and I hope to become a LEO eventually.. Have fun!! I'm sure some LEOs will chime in and give there advice.. :thumbup

Keep your mouth shut.

Let the Officer know you are a student and are interested in a career as a LEO.

Keep your mouth shut. (and listen to what the Officer says when it comes to what he/she expects as in what you can and can not do).

Keep your eyes open and learn. :)

Some allow you to sit in on briefing; some will just pick you up out front. Don't be a pest, don't be a badge bunny, don't ask a gazillion questions; but do be afraid to ask relevant questions and just makes some interesting small talk. Nothing more awkward that a few hours riding around in silence.

Most officers will give you the ground rules at the start. DON'T BRING ANY WEAPONS!

All I had to do was print out an application form from their department website..or you could propably find it by googling the department and ride along, thats how I found the Sac Sheriff form. Then I just filled it out and mailed it in, and literally the next day a woman called me and just asked what day would work and bam Monday at 2:00p.m.

but a bigger department might have you do more things i dunno

And if you're in Citrus Heights, I can provide the locations and name of a few deserving individuals. I worked their park system for a year and a half, as a peace officer.

Your tag below your avatar reminds me of high school calculus. There was a little song a friend of mine made up...and that's the only way I can remember pi.

(and this will me look like an uber geek)

tangent, secant, cosine, sine. 3 point one four one five nine. sound off. d-y. sound off. d-x. d-y. d-x. y prime.

:nerd

never said it was good...just reminded me of calculus.

For me, it wasn't an hour pretalk. More like 2 minutes and had me sign off the waiver incase I got popped in process.

We did have plenty of time to talk, and it was a nice uneventful day. This was San Ramon PD for me. We even stopped to get lunch.
Oh, and she(my officer) was totally hot. :thumbup
This was back when Obie Anderson was chief. What a nice guy. I miss him.

I'd say don't talk when she's on the radio. Don't point with your fingers to anything. Don't get out of the car unless she tells you, and don't order the most expensive thing on the menu.

I can only hope it's:
1. A funny party trick
2. Something you do to make money

Any other reason...:rolleyes

this....is what I am going to do for the rest of my life. I spent 6-7 hours riding along with my officer, and if I didnt have school in the morning I would have taken her up on the offer to stay til midnight.

Honestly, I have never....have I been so excited, and had so much fun. Even when we werent really doing anything but driving, just knowing that at the end of the drive...something was at that call.

She told me that she was sorry that it was a boring and slow day, gave me her card and said anytime I wanted to go on another ride along to giver her a call, or if I had any questions to ask her.... I just had to stare and be like :wow:wtf
..............that was the most fun I have had..ever

I know that things might change from now, but honestly right now I can see myself doing that as a career until retirement, AND enjoying it.

Her ground rules were: If I say to get back in the car, go no questions asked. Or if she end up getting her ass kicked, not to try and help but to call for assistance. :x Even though I would rather call..then help:x Other than that she said I could get out of the car on traffic stops if I stayed behind her.. and I could follow her into house ..etc

she was awesome!:thumbup

ooooooooooh, i am smiling anf giggling like a school girl. You guys have an awesome job:cool

I have had the exact same feeling on the few ride alongs I have gone on.. the most fun I have had, even when they were slow which they all were, nothing too exciting, except a DUI which was kinda fun.. I totally understand how you feel, I hope to get into LE eventually, seems like such a fun job, but also very stressful and dangerous at the same time.. though the positives I hope outweigh the negative...:teeth
