High-speed chase ends when motorcyclist runs out of gas
Penne Usher
An Illinois man took law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase Sunday that started on Inter-state 80 near Penryn that ended when his motorcycle ran out of gas.
Larry Goetluck, 41, was riding a Honda street motorcycle and clocked by a California Highway Patrol aircraft just outside Auburn at speeds in excess of 140 mph, said Officer Mike Fong of the Newcastle CHP office.
“The chase started on westbound Interstate 80 around 12:15 p.m. near Penryn and continued on through Loomis and Penryn surface streets,” he said.
One patrol officer, a motorcycle officer and a CHP helicopter tracked Goetluck.
The suspect ran out of gas on Power House Road at Oak Hollow Road in Penryn.
“There was a little bit of struggling,” Fong said.
Goetluck was arrested on suspicion of felony evading, reckless driving and for not having a driver’s license.
He is being held in Placer County Jail on $20,000 bail.
No tank of gas is bigger then the radio airwaves.

No tank of gas is bigger then the radio airwaves.
Judging from the small amount of detail in the report, his tank must have been no where near full when he began to evade. He may have zig-zagged a bit, but the start and end of this chase are not very far apart.
“There was a little bit of struggling,” Fong said. :laughing
Cue the Chris Rock video!

Is it true that if your are crazy enough they (cops) will back off because the pursuit is too risky? Just trying to clear up this old mith i heard someplace.

Super circumstantial. Do they have enough info to apprehend you later? Is the officer in a super hero mindstate? If the only means of making the situation less life threatening is to discontinue pursuit, then an officer should... however it is easily justifiable to continue even if it is not the safest route for all involved. Having a bird on you makes it much easier to back off vehicle pursuit as well. Way too many factors for a simple yes or no, so in my minds No. If I run, I'm caught or dead.

Yes, sometimes. But it's not going to do you much good.
E.g. in my ridealong with OPD, the officer pursued a truck code 3 through a residential neighborhood for probably 10 blocks before disengaging because the risk of injuring bystanders was too high.
This is pretty variable as policy between departments, shift sergeants, etc etc tho AFAIK.
And it's not going to help you if they manage to get your plate, set up a roadblock, or have a chopper follow you. The first one gets you a very unfriendly knock on the door, the second two get you the Chris Rock option.
Oh and don't forget the "run away right into the back of a semi" option. Also not pretty.

[Bunell voice]...leading police on a dangerous pursuit at blazing speeds over double the posted limit... this dare-devil criminal didn't just run out of luck, he ran out of gas too! Thanks to the brave cops and a police helicopter overhead, he never had a chance! Next time, this scofflaw will check his gas gauge before he thinks about running from the law![/voice].

This driver is wanted in Illinois. But currently thousands of miles away, getting to know the California Highway Patrol!
My first motorcycle pursuit was one mile long, and ended in a fatality (rider).
Judging from the small amount of detail in the report, his tank must have been no where near full when he began to evade. He may have zig-zagged a bit, but the start and end of this chase are not very far apart.
Risk vs. Gain. How much am I willing to risk to catch this guy. I'm pretty gutsy, and know my limits, but there is a time in every pursuit when the Officer has to say "Not today, but there will be another day."
