I don't think so. The afm lap timer is a transponder that sends a signal. It is only incidentally a lap timer in that it allows the data acquisition system at the receiver end to plot lap times, its primary purpose is to keep track of who is where in a race, by plotting the start time and the times the various transponders pass the beacon, each transponder having its own signature. The literature I read on that link did not say anything about remote capability. Generally you just pay the AFM or another racer for a transponder.

Nice setup but don't get it to meet AFM requirements, only if you need the data it provides.

You have to use a Db Com transmiiter. Its easiest if you just buy it from the afm.
It's required and there is no accepted "substitute".

Did your NRS not go over this stuff with you?
The info is also in the new racer packet.

tranponder. It function as a lap timer in that you can get print outs of some of your lap times. If you want a real onboard lap timer, buy one separately

The unit you are looking at (actually your link goes to the auto model MXL, and not the motor model MXL, here is the moto specific MXL model http://www.aimsports.com/products/moto-pnp/index.html) will not be triggered by the dbcom system, and the AIM MXL unit will not send a signal for the dbcom receiver to pick up and score you with.

However, this doesn't mean that there are not beacons setup at the AFM events that won't trigger the AIM unit you are looking for so you get your lap times on board.

You will find at least one (and sometimes more) AIM beacons setup track side at AFM events, as well as pretty much any track day event. Those units will trigger the MXL Unit for onboard lap times. You will also find XT Racing beacon setup so people with Ultra-Lap systems can user their systems.

But just to clarify, this neither of these systems will integrate with the dbcom system (different technologies), so if you buy an AIM or XT-Racing timer, you will also need to get a dbcom unit for AFM timing/scoring.

and thats just that little box that sits on your bike someplace, and is $200? right?

that's correct, you'll be able to get it at the first race when your signing up in the morning, just remember the $200 is just a deposit, you get it back when you return the box (after your racing career ofcourse)

I think you need to look at the wording. This has changed since the system was first brought online. From the wording on the website, the $200.00 is a purchase, with the AFM having the option to buy it back from you depending on it's condition.

Yep Charo is correct--my aim laptimer has worked at every afm practice/race event--NOT for official AFM scoring and timing, you will need a dB comm for that, but works fine for your own informational purposes.

Ditto for trackdays

Holly crap, I think hell just froze over, at least that's what I was told would happen the day Jeff agreed with something I said ;)

I know I bought an XT unit with the beacon. Never brought the beacon with me to an AFM race, or a track day. Worked at every one I showed up at. I chalked it up to magic elves?

so im gonna get the aim sports digital dash, but i can still use it as my lap timer and put my becon on the start/finish wall, and at the first race i will buy a a dbcom lap timer from AFM at the first race.....sound ok?

Uhhh no. You can buy whatever you want and use whatever you want you have to buy the dmcom TRANSPONDER at AFM, and DO NOT PUT A BEACON> There are 400 racers there with identical lap timers. If we all put beacons, there won't be one lap time worth recording. Don't worry about a beacon. ONE will magically appear. No need to bring yours to the race or to a trackday. In fact you will get seriously pissed on if you do.

oh got you so the signal that AFM puts out will work with my lap timer?

or just forget lap times all together?

No it does not. ONE individual under AFM oversight will put out an infrared beacon ( for onboard private laptimers). The afm transponder is RF.

or just forget lap times all together?

You will get a print out after practice and race of some of your laptimes from the AFM. Used to be all not sure if it still is.

As far as using a lap timer, up to you. they help some and others find them no help. They probably won't help you in a race, you don't want to be taking your eye off the track to look at laptimer and think about what it might mean, good way to crash.
