Hi all,

Just last Sunday I picked up a 2003 GSX-R600 that was originally an Arclight bike. It has had two subsequent owners. I took it out to Buttonwillow the day after picking it up to begin sorting it out to my liking. I have no idea what has been done to the engine; I ran it on 91 pump gas and it seemed to run pretty well. It has NO pull below about 7,000 rpm, but I assume this is normal for it's state of tune.

I have two questions that seem most immediately pressing:

1: Would I know via poor running if the engine is not happy with pump gas or could this do damage without showing any immediate signs?

2: There is no Power Commander on the bike. Is it possible that Arclight set up the fueling by some manor other than a PC? If not, perhaps somewhere along the line the PC was removed and the bike is running too lean and, even though it feels like it runs well, damage could occur due to a lean condition.

Thanks in advance for any help or information.

Anyone here would only be guessing, even Mr. Arclight himself since it's been a few years since he's had his hands on the bike. Get it to a dyno shop, see what the fueling is like. I've never seen Arclight bikes without some kind of mapping unit, I think in 03 they used the Yoshimura EMS stuff.
At the track, just splurge and buy the 100 octane stuff. Costs a little more, but your engine will be much happier with it. Also, Arclight bikes ALWAYS make good power even below 7k, so I bet your fueling is off. But like I said, get it to a dyno shop to be sure.

I've got an '02 Arclight 600. Mine has the Yosh ems unit. I was told that my bike was mapped for U4, but could run happy on pump (which is how I've run it since I've had it).

As far as being dead below 7k.......like Kim said, check out your local dyno.

It's normal because it is a 600. You have bounce the thing off the limiter the whole time to go fast on it.

^^^ well there's that too! :laughing

Thanks for the input. I have been able to contact a previous owner (who aquired it from Arclight) and the bike originally had the Yosh EMS and it was removed somewhere along the way. I'll find the right person to get it on a Dyno and correct the fueling as needed.

If anyone else has any interesting bits of information about these bikes I would love to hear it.

Thanks again,

Here's the bike at Buttonwillow this past Monday.

It would be worth your while to call KC at BRG--he's got a ton of experience and WILL make your bike run better and faster. He's kinda funny lookin' though....

I8-apex,

I asked the guy who actually works at Arclight garages for the advise aboud fuel.

here is what he told me (direct quote):
"..if you still have the original Arclight 600 race motor, I would say the safest bet would be the 100 octane race gas you get at the track. Easy to get, plenty of octane to control detonation, and not crazy expensive. When racing we would usually use VP MR11 or equivalent for max. power but also max. $$. And corrosive to your fuel pump and injectors, so must be flushed with pump gas after every use."

Cheers.
