Yes it’s been asked, but basically it’s easier and quicker to move a number of motors this way than single file. Take a group of 10 motors and put them in a single file line; see how long it would stretch and how easy it would be to get the group split up.

on 4th of july I was hanging out up at the wall and saw a couple motorcycle cops riding CHiPs style, didn't seem like a very good idea to me on grizzly peak.

Its actually safer for us to ride side by side. We can communicate easier using head nods, hand signals, and simply talking. We never end up in each other's blind spots as we would if we rode one behind the other. We are MORE visible to traffic than a single bike would be.

And................................... it looks cool!

When you ride with your partner for a period of time you basically know exactly what they are going to do, and evverything becomes second nature.

Looks like the naval weapon station behind them. I bet they are on Willow Pass road heading toward Pitt from Concord. Am I right?

And riding tight formations - it's just like the pilots in the fighter jets that got skills. Showoffs - bunch of showoffs, I tell ya! :laughing

. when I lived in Tampa.. I traveled I275 every day.. 65 miles into Tampa.. That's 110 miles a day... to far to drive to put up with any BS..

and one day.. these two motor cops were side by side..

and it was apparent that were boxing a dude in that was in front of us; like it was about to be a chase.. well.. I saw danger.... the positions they chose, left me no way out no where to go because of traffic.. they were side by side in two center lanes..

and I'm not going to be a victim of circumstance if I can help it. the cars behind me would have smashed into me..

So as soon as they lit car up; the driver of the car did what I though he was going to do: stomp on the brakes.. just as soon as I saw that, the cops fanned out into the left and right part of their lanes effectively closing any hole I would have had to get out.

I dropped from sixth into 4th gear and basically got the hell out of there, riding the shoulder.. I didn't care.. before they crashed me out or I got hit..

so I pass everyone at sound breaking speeds, ahead of their road block..and one of the cops breaks off and pulls up beside me as I'm ahead now and out of danger..

We get into a screaming match.. ..he says "SLOW down!!" and I start yelling back.. YOU DIDN'T LEAVE ME A HOLE!!! what THE FUCK WAS THAT!!! YOU LEFT ME IN HARMS WAY!!! I want NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU! ..

he let me go and dropped back.. He knew I was right.. I wasn't mad.. I was speaking in my loudest.. fuck this shit voice, and I think the cop caught on what happened.. I'm not letting them crash me out.. screw that..

side by side... it's not always safe for everyone else..

saizai
02-24-2008, 02:24 PM
So, by the same logic, would you recommend that Harley parades go in side-by-side or staggered formation?

I thought the usual recommendation was staggered > side-by-side for safety... and I don't see how being a cop changes that.

Sai:

Some things that differ with LEO's:
In my unit, we have all been trained EXACTLY the same way. We continuosly train in order to stay sharp. We ride together daily. I know Exactly what my partner will do in a given situation. MY partner and I discuss such events ALL THE TIME. We prepare for the unexpected. We do things without communicating. Our unit debriefs EVERY SINGLE TIME we ride as a group,, no matter how short of a trip it was. We have no rank in these debriefs and any issue is fair game. Riding at speed, in formation is a learned skill which requires a ton of concentration,, luckily none on our unit takes it lightly. I'm not boasting here,, please don't take it as such,, just trying to provide some insight..

I ride with people a lot but I don't know anyone I'd be comfortable riding right next to.

I agree with 5mary4, you have be trained the same way.

Like this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbrByL9F22s)

5M4 - But this seems to be just as much applicable to motorcycle riders in general, in particular organized clubs.

And AFAIK - you haven't disagreed - the standard wisdom is that riding side by side is *inherently* more dangerous, to everyone involved and nearby, than riding staggered. (Much less room for maneuver, avenues of escape, avoidance of road hazard, time buffer, etc etc.)

I agree that training is going to have an impact - it'll make whatever you do that much safer. (And clearly from the vid you posted, your skills are top-notch.)

But that doesn't address the question of whether it'd be safer for you to a) train and practice side-by-side or b) train and practice staggered... which is what we're talking about here.

I refer back to,, We do it cuz it looks cool. Seriously tho,, yes you are right,, you can't argue with time/distance. However, thru training we greatly minimize that risk.

No motorcyclist can argue with "we do x 'cause we just like it, and we at least try to minimize the additional risk". ;)

While escorting motorcades, they need to ride side by side. So it would be wise to practice it as much as you could.

I still feel more comfortable riding side by side with my partner than I do staggered. I'm talking about enforcement riding and not offduty cruising around. I'm not willing to give up the communication aspect of having my partner right next to me. When riding side by side I notice way fewer vehicles left turning me. Riding solo I get left turned at least once a day.

So, my assumption here is that the inside bike is responsible for defining the turn, with the usual admonitions about looking through the turn, etc. What about the outside bike? Where is he looking to accomplish the turn in sync?

Tampa police don't work traffic accidents.. there's so many accidents and fender benders they've commissioned public safety officers that only work wrecks.. that'll give you an idea of the volume of wrecks..

Ever have a car 360 spin behind you and hit the guard rail where you just were?? happened to me..

Ever been in traffic next to another rider that was hit from behind and killed?? I have.. it sucks..

So.. I've had enough scary experiences to know when to; "give er"..

I'll take an ass chewing, thanks..

So basically it isn`t illegal to ride next to each other, but it is recommended to ride staggered right? I mean I feel safer staggered, but as far as the law is concerned I am curious. Because since I am still a noob, I pretty much follow what other "more experienced" riders seem to do as long as it seems safe, and if I ever saw a CHP do it, I would assume it was safe and legal.

Riding side by side is legal. Many states that explicitly restrict lane sharing have a clause allowing motorcyclists to ride side by side.

Don't think this is the case. LEOs do what is required for their job. This includes wearing 3/4 helmets or 1/2 helmets (rather than the safer full-face). This includes wearing very limited skin protection at the advantage of mobility. This even includes riding side-by-side, rather than the safer staggered formation. This is their job, it's not "safe" which is why they get paid. If it was safe, then everyone who rides a motorcycle would just become a LEO because you would get paid for cruising around all day.

MSF suggestions are the best for a newbie and you should follow them, not what you see the police doing.
