I think he's forgotten which lever is brake and clutch...but he knows exactly where the coffee is and when the staff makes a fresh pot.

I don't think you guys had those bikes in 06 Brian, must have been 07. Unless Scott's got a hookup with Chuck and threw those pinstripes on in the parking lot.

We had just received 3 of the bikes prior to that comp,, we didn't even enter them because we felt it was unfair to ride against the 1150's (which it was). We only did demo rides on them and the times showed how much better they were compared to the 1150's. We currently run in a different class than all other bikes because of the superior handling of the 1200 (except the st1300).
For those that don't know him,, that's my former Sgt. Scott McCartney. You will not find a better rider on the planet. I owe everything to him,, as do many others.

I hope BMW paid him (or the SCSD) more than a buck to use his likeness on its website.
He looks really comfortable on that bike.

Hey- Scott just told me HE was 5M4 before he made Sergeant- cool!

Hahaha,, ya he was,, then he became 5MS,, but old habits die hard and he would answer up for me on the radio,, dork. So if I got dispatched to a crash and he answered up for me,, I'd make him go take the paper.........
"Main to 5M4".
5MS, "Go ahead"
"I've got a 901 for you at Folsom and Zin"
Awkward silence followed by "copy",, all the while i was :rofl
I'd let him get out of his office and onto his bike before I would cancel him as I arrived on scene... Gawd those were the days........

Are the 1200's really that much better? I know they are lighter, and the front suspension is different.
I keep considering getting a really clean r1150rt (no, not the RTP) but I am drawn to the 1200RT.
And Mr. McCartney looks very proficient and relaxed on that bike.

Ya, hands down the 1200 is superior to the 1150. It has some quirks specific to LEO work that I have been vocal about. ie; the saddle bags suck for working out of, 1st gear is waaaay to high for what we need it to do, the radio box is ridiculously high and has no lip inside to keep your stuff from falling out when you open it. Stupid stuff like that. BUT, hands down it will out turn, out accellerate, and flat out run the 1150... The heated seat/grips are nice tooooo.:teeth

Rob Nye built an Iron Butt Rally rig out of a new 1200RTP. The RTP was better than the standard RT because of all the different accessories available for LE use. IIRC it has 2 batteries because of the extra equipment. I don't know how he bought it but it turned out to be a great LD rig.......up until the FD failure.:teeth
BTW
How long are your clutches lasting?
5MARY4
02-24-2008, 08:55 PM
We go thru clutches alot faster on the 1200. With the taller 1st gear it takes considerably more clutch slip to run at slow speed or get it going quickly from a dead stop. I'd give up 15mph on the top end for a better bottom end in a heart beat.

The K1200GT I have does 7MPH in first gear at idle. 4MPH would be far better for single lane traffic. But, the damn Germans know better...

Just curious: does the new R1200 has the tendency of "being pushed to the right" when you blip the engine? I've experienced this behavior on both R1100 and R1150.

Yea, taking mine in tomorrow for a 600 mile change on the FD oil...29400 on the clock. :|
I love my RT, but in the last 6k miles I've had all the gear box seals replaced, the clutch replaced, and the bearings in the final drive replaced (which I'm going to have to quiz them on tomorrow since I've read the FD should be completely replaced when it goes). All of it under warranty, but I am more than a bit nervous with 36k looming...
Oh, I forgot the key chip sensor in the ignition had to be replaced too.

Make sure you check the FD after it's been serviced,, we got one back from the dealer w/no oil in it and it smoked in a few miles (go figure)

Is this considered good? I have very limited knowledge on the BMW and I do not know how you veterans like/dislike this side-way force.

It's only noticeeable sitting at a stop and blipping the throttle. The tq of the engine pushing it over a tad. Not noticeable at all really while you're riding it. To me, neither good or bad, just something to get used to

That's common for all opposed twin boxer designs.

AFAIK this was a problem for the GS when going off road. It was difficult to go very slow without rowing the clutch. I believe the new GSA has a lower first gear just for that reason. You would think they could drop that into the RT-P without too much trouble.
My RT has about 17k on it and (knock on wood) has been pretty good. I did have a fuel leak of which they fixed under warranty. This is my first motorcycle dry clutch and I it has changed the way I ride the bike. I don't care what they say, I feather the clutch as little as possible. I don't like the smell. It smells like..................FAIL.
