My friend was ticketed in Walnut Creek for it. I would imagine it's illegal to park anywhere not designated for motor vehicle parking.

I don't park on the side walk next to public roads. I remember reading somewhere that it is illegal to do so.

But I do park on the private paved pedestrain walking area in front of the stores in those shopping centers where you can't find a parking space around lunch time. Usually I find a nice big and open area (next to a fountain/tree or something) and just park there. Never blocking anything and never had any issues. One time when I came out, a bunch more bikes were parked next to mine :)

yea. to clarify. i see the bikers parking near the entrances to say target and safeway where the bike is out of the way of any foot traffic. but it still is a sidewalk. thats what i meant.

Search for "parking" and "sidewalk" nets you lots of threads.

In 98% of the situation, it's illegal by municipal code. SF throws $100 tickets at sidewalk parkers.

If the bike is 100% on private property, and isn't blocking the public sidewalk, it may be ok, but unless it's your own property don't count on it.

I've seen cops cite in strip malls before, watched someone get a handicapped ticket for $300 because he was dumb enough to leave it in the striped area near the marked space.

Technically it's a CA state motor vehicle code no-no to park any motor vehicle on the sidewalk.

In SF I'll often park on the sidewalk if no other parking is available but I make sure to park close/parallel to the curb, preferably close to a tree or phone pole, so I'm not interfering with pedestrian traffic. That being said I wouldn't park on the sidewalk for any extended period of time where I couldn't keep an eye on the bike.

In some parts of town parking enforcement drones will overlook this indiscretion. In other parts of town don't be surprised to find a meaty parking ticket on your bike.

If you're going to do the crime be prepared to pay the fine.

Technically it's a CA state motor vehicle code no-no to park any motor vehicle on the sidewalk.
Where the CVC is enforceable:

22500. No person shall stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle whether attended or unattended, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the directions of a peace officer or official traffic control device, in any of the following places:

(f) On any portion of a sidewalk, or with the body of the vehicle extending over any portion of a sidewalk, except electric carts when authorized by local ordinance, as specified in Section 21114.5. Lights, mirrors, or devices that are required to be mounted upon a vehicle under this code may extend from the body of the vehicle over the sidewalk to a distance of not more than 10 inches.

(l) In front of or upon that portion of a curb that has been cut down, lowered, or constructed to provide wheelchair accessibility to the sidewalk.

If there's no motorcycle parking then I'm making my own spot. At my school motorcycles aren't allowed to park in car spots, even if they have car permits (which makes absolutely NO sense).

My local movie theater has motorcycle parking front and center, and a sign that specifically says, "PLEASE DO NOT PARK MOTORCYCLES ON SIDEWALK". Since there's parking RIGHT there, I heed the sign.
