View Full Version : Red light fright

I did a search on this and know what I did was wrong, but could someone help me with this?
I was in Santa Rosa, on Santa Rosa Avenue and Hearn. I was at a red light in the right turn lane. I was stopped at the limit line. This intersection has a right turn arrow. It was red too.
I always keep an eye on my six, and noticed a large truck coming up behind me at speed, not slowing down. Driver was distracted on a cell phone. I had a choice, pulling forward and begin my turn, or getting hit from behind. I chose to pull forward and to the right a bit, not going completely around the corner, just enough to get out of the way. Driver looked up and slammed on brakes, missing me. I then proceeded when traffic was clear. I had to find a safe place to pull over and shake for a few minutes. I was so close to being a flattened Bear. I hate situations like this.
Problem is, I am afraid that I might get a ticket. I believe there may be red-light cameras at this intersection.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

It should be a valid enough defense. Generally the pictures (sequence of photos) or video is reviewed, and it should show that truck in flattening mode. Do you know if that idiot ended up past the limit line or in the intersection?
Write everything down while it's fresh just in case.

Legally, under CVC 21462 (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc21462.htm), you are allowed to disobey a traffic control device (such as a stop sign or red light) in order to avoid a collision.
21462. The driver of any vehicle, the person in charge of any animal, any pedestrian, and the motorman of any streetcar shall obey the instructions of any official traffic signal applicable to him and placed as provided by law, unless otherwise directed by a police or traffic officer or when it is necessary for the purpose of avoiding a collision or in case of other emergency, subject to the exemptions granted by Section 21055.

I was at a stop light with a couple of friends, 2 lanes in each direction,4 way intersection. I and friend #1 were in the #1 lane and friend #2 was in the right lane. Next thing I know there's a red car where my friend used to be, his bike is now being crunched by cross traffic while he is cartwheeling through the air. The cunt that was driving the car freaks out and tries to flee(our light is still red) bolts into the intersection only to be T-boned by a Armoured Brinks truck (that was avoiding my friend who at that point was still flopping around in the street).
How the story ends... Friend, banged up but due to good gear came through alright. His new F4i(less than 2k) totaled. The cunt(who was trashed) off to jail, her car... reported stolen by her mother....

p.s. I don't think any of the red light cameras in santa rosa are actually working. Just there for scare factor.
Let us know if you actually see something show up in the mail though.

Did you look at santa rosa's home page? or the PD's home page. There might be some info there.

Santa Rosa - Shut Down after Test
In approx. 2000 there was a brief test of red light cameras. Then they were removed. PD staff said: "They were not cost-effective." Status as of Oct. 6, 2005: Per public works staff, still no cameras.

Thanks for the information gang. :thumbup
I was really stressing about this one. I have been such a good bear for the last 15 years. I have a mostly clean record (the exception being a temp. suspension due to a health problem) and I was very afraid this was going to look bad on my driving record. I think I will start taking an alternate route if I have to be in this area. The stupid factor seems to be little higher there.

Damn, if only I had the will power and good sense to not do what someone says not to do. That didn't go well with my breakfast.

Unfortunately this laws only makes people use hands free devices. Studies show that just talking on the phone is the real problem. More distracting the being drunk... :rolleyes

OP: glad you had the presence of mind to check your six and think/act ahead. Worse (but unlikely and debatable) case you get a ticket. STILL better to be alive and in one piece with ticket/fine in hand, than a splattered mess on the road. Good move.
