might seem like some lame questions but here:

Do you guys have to buy your bikes or are they just used by you on duty?

Do you always have to be in uniform? I saw a cop on a bike today with a leather jacket and jeans - but cop helmet, cop shades, cop brakes, cop shocks, cop wheels, cop engine.

Just wondering - Mike

Every city has a different policy.

Most cities (and Counties) that have motorcycles for police/sheriff's patrol, the vehicles are either purchased outright or are purchased on a buy-back plan (through the dealer) or are leased from a dealer. The agency is the owner and they equip it for duty. Once the contract or useful life of the vehicle is up, they rotate it out and rotate a new one in. Most buy-back contracts are 1 to 2 years. For cities that buy them outright, they keep them for around 80k, then auction them off.

Some cities (Walnut Creek and Foster City come to mind) have a program where the individual officers have an opportunity to purchase the bike through a discount plan at a fleet price, then the title is in the officer's name, but the city is the registered owner so long as the officer/bike are assigned to traffic/motorcycle duties. Then the city puts on the emergency equipment and then pays the officer a lease or rental fee (usually monthly) for the use of the vehicle for their duties. There are many restrictions as to how the bike can be used when off duty, taken for maintenance, etc.. Once the "tour" on the bike is over, then the city recovers the equipment and the officer simply registers the bike in their name and it is theirs to keep.

You didn't mention what make/model this particular bike was, but I was wondering what cop brakes look like. :laughing
