The state corrections came my law enforcement preparation class last week, and I wasnt really interested in working in corrections, but then an El Darado Sheriff's Deputy came this week and was really cool, and he mentioned that you had to be 20 to apply, but they were hiring people 18+ to work in their jail.

If anyone is familiar with that type of work....really how dangerous or bad is corrections work, the state correction people who came said that statistically that working in the prison is safer than in the streets.

But also, I would only want to work in corrections until I am old enough to get a job with a sheriff's office or some other department. So is it possible to work in a prison job and still go to school, because if I could go to school, and work in a job like that for a few years to put on my resume that would be awesome, it think.

What are your opinions on this?

Statistics aside, I mean you ride a motorcycle, but working in a prison might be safer than on the streets but it seems really monotonous. I thought I read that DOC has the highest suicide rate of the departments.

Personally, I'd avoid working for the state.

You may want to find out if the El Dorado County SO's position is as a Deputy Sheriff or a CO. If it's as a Deputy, they rotate you in and out of the detention division (which depending on the agency can include court services, transportation services and the jail.) It's a good learning experience working in the county jail because you meet so many new and interesting people that when you do get out to the patrol division- you get to arrest the some of the same folks. :laughing If you work in the jail on graveyard shift, you may have lots of time to study, but that depends what your job assignment is.

The recruiter who came to my class said that they have civilians work in their prison, so I wont be a deputy. But I thought it would be a good job to have when I finish school and want to apply to be a deputy, not to mention good pay.

Dude, go for it. If your goal is to be a Deputy with that department, starting off as a CO is a great way to get your foot in the door (assuming you do a good job). As somebody else already posted, it's a great way to learn who the scumbags are and how they operate so that you can arrest them again when you get to the street. I went to the academy with a guy that was becoming a Deputy for El Dorado S.O. He started off as a CO with that department as well.
