Weather in Nevada in April is unpredictable. Plan on it being cold at night but the daytime temp is impossible to guess. Last year it was fairly warm in April.

Around 30F at night as an average.

There is the possibility of it being 70 during the day, or snowing. It is highly unpredictable.

Yes you can camp Saturday night.
Edit: The gates will be open until 7pm. After that there is a security guard working until 2am on Sunday morning. If you show up between 7pm and 2am they said just park at the gate and the security guard will let you in. You can also call the track to confirm this. 775.575.7217

As far as the weather goes, as was said earlier, you can pretty much count on it being cold at night, but chances are more likely for it to be mid 60's to 70 than for it to be snowing or cold in the day. But it is Northern Nevada in April. We'll just have to wait to see what the forecast is when it gets a little closer. :)

Very sweet of you to offer me a place to sleep afterward but you and I both know how dangerous it can be to ride (on and off the track) with very little sleep. It's like putting a drunkard behine the wheel. You're asking for an accident.

Maybe I can make it out next time you are offering a track day. I'm sure there will be plent more...

There are not that many hotels in Fernley it's self so I would recommend looking in Reno
The Sands always has cheap rooms available
Circus Circus is right of the freeway
The Fairfield Inn in Sparks is right on the freeway closest to Fernley.

If you have questions as to a particular Hotel let me know and I will try and answer them for you:thumbup

Hey, I singlehandedly had the speed limit raised in parts of Fernley from 25 to 35. I was ticketed for 35 in a 25 zone and challenged the legality of the limit based on the lack of properly executed traffic survey. Lo and behold, a week later the limit was 35 in quite a few places.

Staying in Carson City is another alternative. LOT's of cheap hotels and the ride out to the track on Hwy 50 East isn't bad at all (and you get to avoid Ferntucky). Within the next year there will be lots of nice new hotels and casino's in Carson too. Casino Fandango is almost done with their Best Western and has a bunch of great restaurants and a movie theater.

And when it 'rains' in Nevada on a '30% chance' day in April, in Fernley, it usually will do one of two things, 1) Give you a sunburn 2) Sprinkle long enough to make the bugs smear on your windshield :teeth

The biggest problem your going to have is doing 100mph in 50 degree weather (only about 40 in your first sessions) so dress warm cause the wind chill is gonna be a bitch! :laughing

A big thanks to all the SSA folks who hleped organise and execute a pretty smooth day, not perfect but we know what to look for the next time.

This trackday sucked as far as the weather, it was 25 degrees at 7am then it jumped up a hole two degrees by 9am, the RR froze and could not get the bikes running thats how cold it was, then tires and oils never came up to temp therefore the handleling on the bikes was shit! I seen alot of riders trying to adjust suspensions. maybe when the weather is better we'll enjoy ourselves.

If I'd brought my carbs and tank, I could have run tomorrow. bummed about that. (rebuilding bike after some engine issues) slight oversight. :( Anyone coming up from SF? maybe I could buy beer, if you brought my carbs and tank for my SV. :teeth

Picking up my bike in a few, and enjoying the sunny weather here in Reno at the moment.

CrapDoodle !

I wish I had checked back in on this thread before the weekend !! sorry machete !

My bmw ran GREAT :twofinger

(sorry about the RR having problems, DAMN it was cold this am ! I think the bmw thought it was in the Bavarian Alps )

Hey...got to give props, or a psycho commitment, to the guy who rode his r6 from San Jose that morning!!1

He got stuck in snow and ice on the way. He arrived about 10am finally...bike all full of salt and road grime.

Anyone who wants to complain of weather should sit down and have a drink with that guy! :laughing

Considering how small the A and B groups were I would have likeed to have had the format changed from 3 groups to 2. Otherwise I had lots of fun and would definately come back on a warmer day.

Thank you for the suggestion

We did think about that but the speed differential between the slowest B Group Rider and Fastest A group rider was Way to much to be safe. therefore we went with the safest option.

B group also got larger during the day as riders were bumped up from C group. Having those riders be passed by A group riders would not have been a comfortable, safe situation for the riders or for us as a club. We wanted the day to be as safe and fun for all the riders who signed up.

We look forward to having you come to the next day we host in June or July hoepfully that wont be to hot!!!:thumbup

Best tech stickers ever! Great organization on signup, tech, etc. Fast, too.

Session lengths were too short. I was only getting 4 laps per session. Tiptoeing around on cold tires/cold track for the first lap, then three laps, then in.

That's the second trackday I've done where RFR had the wrong configuration set up in the morning. Maybe better communication and somebody taking a confirmation lap before taking everybody out for a sighting lap.

Erik,

I think 2 of the A group sessions ran a bit short 1st of all due to the track config issue, 2nd with the crash in turn 2(B group crash that put back the A group start time). All of the other sessions were ran at a full 17 - 20 minutes.
I found that a few riders were not seeing/ignoring the checkered flag so we started flaging the final lap 1 or 2 minutes early on each session to keep the groups on the right time schedule. We routinly saw riders go past both the start/finish and the Turn 12 flag then continue on another full lap!!

Good idea on the confirmation lap, we will implement that the next time out. I heard the track controller say it was their first track day of the year so we cut them some slack as well.

Then what's all that white shit stuck to our cars (not the snow)? Here in Nevada and the Sierra's, and as far as I know, they 'brine' the roads. :confused

If you are on SBR forum ask there about who the guy was. Rather large azn on a dark green (best as I can tell with all the road grime on the bike.) Yamaha. Was wearing a textile jump suit. I didn't tech his bike since he got there late so didn't get a name.

He was not riding the track. he just came up to meet some friends of his who were riding. i think he said he was gettign practice in for a long cross country ride he was planning.
The full leathers under the textile suit was probably not to comfy!!!!:wow

Got to admire him for riding all that way and BACK in the same day:ride

I think you guys did a good job. Registration was quick and painless, tech went smoothly, sessions ran nicely, and everyone that I met that was associated with SSA was very friendly and helpful. I do think that the stamps on the neck was a bit of a bad idea, but I do realize that everone was pretty well bundled up due to the COLD. For $110.00 I wouldn't pass on the oportunity to join you group for the day in June (even though I'l be driving my car on Thunderhill on Jun 6th). Thanks to all of the SSA who put on this day, I had way more fun than I ever thought I would riding a new (to me) track in sub-freezing temperatures.
