Hi all,
I have a RF-1000 about 5 weeks old and I noticed that some small bits of the foam on the inside top part of the helmet is peeling. Is this normal? Does it pose any safety hazards? Has anyone else experienced this? Should I try to take it back under warranty?
Thanks

No that is not normal, and yes it does pose a safety concern. This is of course if you mean the EPS foam, NOT the liner foam. I would e-mail Shoei and ask them to take a look at the helmet. I would almost guarantee that they will ask you to ship them the helmet. If they find it defective they will replace it.
EDIT: After re-reading your post I have one more question. Are they "peeling" as in the black layer is falling off or are they falling out? "Peeling" might be simply due to use. As your head rocks around in the helmet for a while (during break in) your head might be compressing the innermost layer of the EPS foam. Still, e-mail Shoei - I've found them very responsive and willing to help. Maybe take some pictures if you can.
A few questions though:
Where did you get the helmet? Maybe try dealing with them first of all. Most return policies wont cover something like that, but they might be able to swap it on the spot and sent the helmet in question into Shoei.
Has the helmet been abused? By abused I mean exposed to high heat, dropped, etc.
Is the issue throughout the helmet or is it localized?

take it to the dealer who sold it to you. Who did you buy it from?

Thank you for your detailed response. I snapped a quick picture with my cell phone. Sorry about the quality but its the best I can do until I get home. I hope this provides some more insight.
To answer your other questions: I bought the helmet from CycleGear and it hasn't been abused.

take it back...have them replace it. That is caused from these displays which use posts into the helmet, and dig into the eps. I have seen a few come to my shop like that, which the people stated they bought them off of the hook display

I see. The thing is that I special ordered the helmet from the store so it was shipped to them in the Shoei box. Either way I'll take it back and see what they say.
Thanks
