View Full Version : Do I need to worry about a crack in the frame?

My dad just bought a 99 ZX-6R, it is in pretty good shape.
While doing the normal teardown to restore a bike that has been sitting for 2 years, we noticed there is a hairline crack on the right side of the frame on the inside near the airbox about a foot back from the steering head.
It seems small and only goes down about 1 inch and isn't on the outside of the frame.
This is just a track bike, but we were wondering if it is something to worry about/fix/ or just ride it...

No need to get mad dude. It's kind of obvious.Post up when you're at the track and I'll make sure not to be there.I don't want to get taken out by a piece of broke ass frame:thumbup.

Doesn't really -sound- like he's kidding (though I kind of hope he is...)

I would recommend a trip to see Gerry Piazza, our local guru frame straightener/fabricator. Not only will he be able to weld up the crack, but he can check to see if the frame is bent or not, too.

We've taken many racebikes to him in the past (including my own), and he does nothing but top notch work. And he's an all around great guy to boot!

Here's his website:

Nah, I think "abby normal" was right... I hope you were kidding. Crack in frame BAAAAAAAAAAAD. Doesn't matter where it is... BAAAAAAAAAAAAD. It will only get bigger and since you're using it as a track bike that's a lot more stress than a street bike will get. I've had a frame come apart on me when it was G-loaded. Lemme tell you... you don't want that. Only saving grace is it was on a track but it still cost a pretty penny to fix and replace gear.

You've already got it apart, put a decent weld on that sucker and be done with it. But I would always keep an eye on that spot just in case.

I would take the bike to a professional to have it inspected (like what was already said).

I would not ride a bike on a track, street heck down the block if the frame was in question.

Not trying to be dick, just want to make sure you and your Dad are safe.

nah its easier to deal with once the crack makes the frame break, its a great excuse to get a new bike

What was the source of that outburst? Sheesh. :rolleyes

Any visible or hidden cracks in the frame are a major concern. Sometimes they can be welded up and sometimes the frame is a total loss.

We/you won't know the answer until a reputable frame shop has a chance to inspect this frame crack in person. Internet diagnosis just won't do with issues like this.
