View Full Version : NorCal II 2-day Motard Ride is here!!! 413 miles. 4/19-20/08

You all remember the NorCal 2-day Motard Ride (http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=235965) from a couple months back... well, the sequel is here!

What's in store? We're going to start at Starbucks in Windsor at 9:00AM on April 19th. We're sleeping in Ukiah that night. The hotel reservation will be made on your own, or you can group it up like we did last time. As the date gets closer, I will post up the hotel most of us will be staying at. We're ending the ride, at my place in Windsor sometime in the early evening on the 20th.

The route is complex, with the first day being less miles (170+) than the second day (230+). The first day has harder roads and will be slower-going and involve some "exploring" to complete our task. The second day will be "less exciting" and be more oriented towards stunning views, split up with fantastic goat-roads and food. I should note that the second day will start off with a trek through the ATV park at Cow Mountain.

Is there dirt? Yes, no mud like Sherwood Road from last time. We have two roads that are basically fire-roads, one of which gets a little nastier but pending weather it should be dry. Cow Mountain is only as muddy and dirty as you wish it to be.

Day 1:
http://www.antarius.net/junk/nc2day1.png

Day 2:
http://www.antarius.net/junk/nc2day2.png

So far I'm sure the regular players are in. I'm intending on keeping this ride relatively small, not that I think it'll be an issue because of the difficulty of the ride itself. Lets try to keep it under 15 riders total, ok? Remember, I can house three or four people the night before if you choose to crash at my place. The "norcal ride regulars" get first dibs.

If you're interested, post up and I'll give you the Google Maps link and we'll consider you in!

Remember to bring all necessary shit with you. Gas shouldn't be an issue, but if you can carry extra gas, do it. I will be. Bring extra tubes and patch kits, tire irons are a plus but we shouldn't be to far from a service station if need be. Make sure your bike is running properly and ready to get beat to shit.

See you all there!

**EDIT 04/05/2008**
Okay guys, we're full!

The only other people we'll be allowing are people who have contacted me already regarding "maybe" being able to go. I need to keep this below 15 people.

I'll post up with what hotel I / a lot of us are staying at sometime before next weekend. Glad everyone's going!!!

UPDATE*************************
The hotel information is on the last page (or second to last depending how many more posts we have). In short, it's the Comfort Inn & Suites in Ukiah, CA! I've booked two rooms for a couple of us, the rest of you need to book it ASAP!

MEETING PLACE
You have two options:
If you need to UNLOAD your bike (I.E., you have a truck, you should meet at my house. You wont want to park at Starbucks for 2 days)

1) Meet at my house at 8:00AM Saturday sharp (leave at 8:30AM). If you choose this, PM ME TO GET THE ADDRESS. If you need to crash the night before, I have room for 1 more so you're welcome to PM me and ask.

2) Meet at Starbucks in downtown Windsor. You need to be here no later at 8:45AM as we are leaving at 9:00AM sharp. The address is: 1001 McCleland Dr (Windsor CA, 95492). Do not meet here if you need to unload your bike as there's no long-term parking.

Hmmmm - must get bike serviced, must get homework done beforehand, must finish tax returns, must blow off work to the extreme - HOWEVER, since I bitched and moaned about the last Epic Adventure falling on a fluffy holiday that REAL Americans spend working - I am so in! (that is - if you'll have my whinny self on your most splendiferous ride).

Will be driving Dodge that can haul an extra bike / rider but will not share a room (I snore and am still not convinced that BAD things do not happen between you and your bikes at night).

Couple questions: I see some FMF's posting up (Fast Muther Fuckers aka Corb and Mort), will y'all wait for me (and Jeff :rofl)? Will there be an SO support group so that my wife can hang with the other abandoned wimenz and bitch about how selfish we are?

So I probably won't go.

Hell, I'll go with you guys until it gets too rough :p

I'd like to go until we get to skaggs, and then just head home... we'll see. I could just take off my plastics and have a pretty bang-up-able bike... with a weird floaty headlight. http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/6927/cimg2295ux9.jpg

Teoria

That's HWY-1 and that long line is a total of about 50 miles. About 20 miles in we have a ~20 mile detour of fantastic goat roads to get us back in the mood, then we have another 10-15 mile HWY-1 stretch until we get lunch, and a break from the "straightness." Then it's some fantastic roads, then back to some straightness for 5 or so more miles, and then back to some fantastic goat trails.

It should be noted that the views in that area are fantastic and will give us good photo-ops. I threw in quite a few changes of pace in the middle of that "50 mile stretch" or so of HWY-1 so it shouldn't seem too long or "boring."

It's not a race and everyone rides at a pace they are comfortable with. There will be stops to regroup at all the turns. You will be fine if you go with us.

But being a noob, understand you are obligated to buy the first round of beers Sat. night in Ukiah.:staRang:laughing

It's not a race, but I will just semi-disagree with Luckett and say that this is not a newbie ride. If you think that your skill level is around that of a "noob," then just take the responsible path and choose not to come. It's not that I don't want you to go, it's that I don't want you to hurt yourself or your bike.

That said, I've not ridden with you (Underscore002) and if you think you can do it safely and have the bike to do it.... please, by all means, go for it. I'll add you to the "going" list. I'd love to have new faces be out there.

I don't have a specific number, but considering I have a tiny tank as do many others, we won't go very far. You should be able to go 70-90 miles. I will bring 2L of gas as a precaution.

I NEED tires before this ride, I want to order online but if there is a place locally in the north bay that sells tires for a good price let me know. Not even sure what tires to get yet, the only off road ill see is probably with you guys so I was thinking of either the Pilot Powers or the Continentals for the SM. I can get the PP's for $258 and the Conti's for $208 shipped. I do commute a whole 15 minutes to work every day so I think I'm looking for a tire that can handle the commute and running around town but still grip on the weekends. Also what kind of shit should bring for my bike? Im going to get an extra tube but thats all I can think of, oh, and maybe a little extra gas.

From what I hear both are a good bet :) JP and Mike swear by the PPs and I loved the Contis when I ran them.

As far as what to bring? I don't know...your list looks pretty good. We wont be doing any hardcore mud/dirt riding like last time. I'd say though, if you have spare lever or clutch cable bring that :P The main thing would be to bring anything specialized that your bike might need (ie: to get my wheels off I need 2x14 sockets to pull the sliders off). The stock tool kit is a good place to start :) Oh, and extra undies, possibly extra socks.

Damn, I've only got 2 weeks to get my jetting sorted out :(

Underscore002, I also need tires. I will be going to my friendly local Cycle Gear to get a Pilot Power (rear only). I think they're around $130 or so new, not bad. I've researched it a lot and I've decided, even with the fair amount of dirt us nor-cal'ers do, I will keep Pilot Powers. I don't need to go faster on the dirt than I already do... I crash enough as it is.

You don't crash in the dirt, you crash in shit. Seriously, that road was shit. It was also THE shit, so I guess it works out OK :)

So I get to my friendly local Cycle Gear and some one with the name JP has already bought the last 150-60-17 PP :laughing . Figures. Anyways I have a set on order, I cant wait to try these out.

Comfort Inn & Suites

Ukiah, CA

http://www.comfortinn.com/ires/en-US/html/HotelInfo?hotel=CA978&promo=gglocal

The rate was $69 a night for two adults with two queen beds. I booked two rooms (for Garret and I, and Mort and whomever decides to room with him). The rest of you should book rooms there if you can to keep us all together.

It's not the nicest hotel, but the Marriott didn't have two queen beds per room, only one or a king and I didn't feel like feeling Garrets junk rub up against me in the night. As much as he'd like it....

So, book your shit and be prepared!

Saturday should be nice and it doesn't look like much of a front as we aren't even supposed to get rain in Marin, so hopefully it won't be too impressive up north either.

We'll see!

I just posted up in that thread... but in short... no. I mean, it's not replicating itself, but I'm going to tear the airbox/carb housing apart on friday (before the ride) just to check to make sure.

It never "stuck" or anything like that. It's always remained super smooth and fast, both opening and closing. The play increased, and I tightened it with the adjustments on the bars and it hasn't moved since.... I'm still slightly concerned as to what would make it jump so abruptly.

Fear not, online meteorologists won't even upgrade to a 60% chance until it is actually raining. 25% chance means, "If there is a one-in-a-million chance of one rain drop falling on Sunday, my ass is covered on Monday." Will be chilly though.

Anyone know if I should just install them for the ride or what. When they were all tight they would still move when I put some weight on em, and they are the correct ones and they were tightened! I was all happy to install em after work and now I'm all bummed out. I'm thinking of just installing them for the ride then returning them after? I installed them in my 07 DRZ recently and had to modify the clamps on the inside bar to make them clamp tighter. I took a grinder to the center piece on each side and narrowed them. Now they fit nice and tight, but the bar end insert parts leave a bit to be desired, but they are fuctional now.

Huge thanks to JP, awesome roads, good food, spectacular entertainment (Cliff rocks!), omg good times!!!!

Can't wait for the next one!!! (good luck topping this one!):p

Great group of Tards, hope all that "forgot to put their kickstands down" aren't too sore, glad everyone made it home safely!:applause

pics coming soon to pic thread!

Holy f'n shit that was fun!!! JP, you truly are the epic ride master :ride Thanks for putting this whole thing together. Everything was perfect, including that singletrack section that turned into a double track. Also, that guy "Cliff" wants to give a huge thanks to those great guys that weren't afraid to climb (and slide) around in poison oak to reclaim a tard from the "ravine". Quite honorable of you, really. :thumbup

yep, we had a blast, 415 or so miles. You're lucky to have all these great roads so close to you!!!!!!!!

So many fun roads with hardly any traffic, no cops, goat trails with lots of tight turns, gravel, dirt- everything I need to be happy!!!:Party

You gave me your card, for Luckett. You sure you don't want to sell it? I think he was toying with the idea of buying your DRZ...

He already has a DR, but he needs another bike.

It was a great ride and even a little hiking thanks to the CRI (Chief Ravine Inspector).I should have got some Tecnu have a few spots where I think the poison oak got me a little.Sorry I left early all I was just feeling bad and didn't want it to make me do something stupid and felt it was better to bow out than have any incidents.I forgot how nice of a road Skaggs is until you get to the bridge at least then there are all those stupid straights and fast sweepers. It was a great ride that will long be good memories even the parts like "right after this part it opens into some really nice double track" :laughing
