So I just got my MSF certificate in the mail so I'm planning on going to the DMV to take my written test sometime this week....

question though, does it cover the stuff from the motorcycle handbook only, or does it take it from the normal car handbook as well....

should i be studying both books or just the motorcycle handbook? last time i took a written test was when i was transfering my D.L. to california, and that was 10 years ago, so i might be rusty on the finer points of the law :teeth

iirc, you need to do half of the class C written test and the MC written test

that's how I remember it, 1/2 the regular dl test, plus the m-1
if you are getting your m-1 for the first time you can only miss 3, and you can take it again on the spot if you don't get it the first time
good luck!

If you have not renewed your license within the past year, you will also be given an additional test for every other endorsement you currently hold - the additional tests will be half-tests.

In other words, if you have a class C, plus any commercial license or specific endorsement such as hazmat, air brakes, etc., you'll need to study and be prepared to take an additional test for every endorsement you currently hold.

But as for the M1 test itself, all you need to do is study the motorcycle handbook.

I'm not sure of the total number you're allowed to miss, but I do know that you can take the written test up to 3 times per visit, time allowing. The reason it's capped at 3 is because there are only 3 versions of each test. :thumbup

okay, i'm confused...

i just got my license renewed in the mail like a month ago (expired in march)... i paid the fee, they mailed it to me... but actually taking the written test was 10 years ago...

so 1/2 my test is going to be for class C still? even though i'm going to be adding the M1? 10 questions C test, 10 questions M test?

hurry up and take the m1 test they cant give you the car one within so many months of you renewing you license i got luck last year and only had to take the m1 test. i think it was within the year you renew??

I went in yesterday and took the dmv test, they made me take half the car test also.

You can miss 4 on the M1 test and 3 on the class C.

Study the hell out of the motorcycle handbook.

I think the reason for the class C test is that they issue a new license with an m1 endorsement. Otherwise they would need an exp date for the difference classes on the license. Simpler to just issue one license with two endorsements.
Perhaps if you're class C is recent enough, they will waive the written for that and just have you take the m1.

I renewed my C in 04 and got my m1 in 06. Had to take the C written.

As I recall, 4 was the max wrong allowed.

Remember that the DMV web site has practice tests. I even encountered some of the questions from the practice tests.

You are correct, I had to renew my C, but since I renewed it some time ago, i didn't have to take half of the class C test again

IIRC if you fail you have to wait 2 weeks before taking test again. at least it's that way for minors.

you can take it up to 3 times in one day. but if you fail all three then it is two weeks i believe. When i took my written, i missed 5 on the first test, then she asked if i wanted to do it again? and i was like, right now? she said yeah. O...K... and i passed.

are you over 18?

makes sense about the renewing part....
i wonder since i just literally got it renewed less than a month ago, if i would have to take the C test again... we'll see. my girl is going to take the test with me, so we've post poned it till next week sometime...

and i picked up the normal C class driving book as well to start studying for that as well...

thanks for the heads up...

also, it's 20 questions right?

I passed tests in CA. It's 36 questions.
I recommend you to pass some tests online before you'll go to the DMV.
Here's some tests: DMV motorcycle written tests online

ru coming on to me??? J/k yeah.

i just got my M1 licsence and the test was much shorter than i expected. I also did not take a standard car test, like everyone else is suggesting.

The test was fairly easy, but if you're in doubt, check out the "Practice Test" on the DMV website

i did the practice tests on the DMV website even before i took the MSF or cracked open the handbook and i got a total of 2 wrong from the 3 tests...

still going to study but it seemed easier than I thought *knock on wood* *shoots self in the foot*

thanks for all the help btw :)
