Curious if anyone knows of any good mechanics, specifically one that will work on my old F2 for a decent price. To be honest, I'm not too hot about the way some of the shops here in San Diego are running their business.

I know someone out there knows a good one. Help get my bike up so I can update the maps thread!

Not exactly sure. Bike started backfiring after I did a sparkplug change, more consistantly at idling rpms, usually in about 10 to 20 second intervals (started literally right after the plugs were swapped). Power above idle is horrible. I've swapped back to my old spark plugs, and even changed out to another carb rack... the problem is consistent no matter what I do it seems. It could be something simple, maybe not.

Both sets of carbs I've tried could be dirty, it could also be the spark plug wires... but I've seriously spent over 20 hours trying to deal with it already and am stumped!

The frustration is such that I would rather pay for it not to be my worry and just get it fixed. I need someone who is a crackpot at diagnosing things. Anybody?

ya paying someone to diagnose a problem is lame, mostly because it gives them free reign to charge u watever they want w/ no gaurentee theyll fix the problem... but this is exactly y we have BARF n other forums.

so the bike runs, but rough and backfires every 10-20sec... but the bike ran well before the plugs were changed. hmmm.

k, simple things first... and yes itll sound stupid but its always best to check anyway. r all the plug wires on the correct cylinders and connected all the way?? theoretically, if 2 outta 4 were incorrect, the bike would still potentially run while possibly allowing the mismatched cylinders to fire intermitently. ask me how i kno :P if not, could be weak spark from bad coils or damaged plug wires like u were thinking.

if u still have no luck, id be more than willing to help u out. ill bring my tools, u buy the beer, n well get that thing running.

Or any shops in the LA area?

I live on the Westside and was using Club Desmo on Lincoln for a while, but then they did some bad customer service things and I haven't been back. Looking for someone else, and I prefer to stay with an independent mechanic.

First off, I wanted to update the thread saying what a great job Robert (stangmx13) did on my CBR. He has a fantastic knowledge base and great attention to detail. In addition to fixing it, he ended up finding and correcting things about my bike that I have made it wrong (ex: angle of the clutch position on the clip on was improved), he set up my suspension, gapped my spark plugs, explained how I could improve my current jetting, and many other things.

He said he would be interested in additional hired mechanic work to any barfers in the San Diego area, and I will really put my backing to recommend him. A great guy doing great work... can't ask for much more than that.

Check your spark plug caps and make sure they are pushed on all the way. May not be firing right and getting raw fuel in to the exhaust and igniting.

Moto Tecnica in East LA is great for older bikes. They really know their shiz but I don't take new bikes there because they've been known to be kinda rough with things. That being said, they're whiz-bang problem solvers and their rates are the best I've seen.

Mr. Kimura is amazing, he is a factory trained mechanic from Japan who runs his own shop out of Gardena. If you make an appointment you can kick on the couch and watch him work. He fixes all makes and models and does superior work and for a hell of a lot less. Ducati shops charging close to a grand for the full valve adjustment he will do for around $300. Can't recommend him enough, check MotoWhoops out & tell him Richard sent you!

Update again, returned to Robert (stangmx13) for tire maintenance. This round we changed my tires, re-greased all my bearings and wheel parts. He did a great job explaining how everything is done to an idiot that knows nothing about motors (me).

Once again recommended :thumbup

Thanks for all the links guys.

If you are still having problems, a friend is a very experienced car mechanic who rides and works on his own bike.

If you are on the westside, try GP Cycles on Pico (nearest cross street is Bundy/ Pico).
