Awsome idea!

Too bad we don't all live in tin-roofed housing, but hey, this would be great everywhere else! I wonder how waterproof the roof is now, though?

There are a number of products available that do similar things, but that's a decent option for third world countries where they have empty bottles and water, but may not have recycling programs and access to the products we have now.

It's all a new take on an old idea anyway. Buildings have been built with light wells for about as long as people have been stacking sticks and stones to make a home.

Light wells are one thing, but this is something entirely different. The bottle reflects light and actually broadcasts it - a skylight or tube merely channels it in a single direction. That's why this solution lights up a room, but a recessed light tube alone won't.

And this solution rocks - it could be made to work in conjunction with a light tube for American housing, but would have to have some type of drain or glass cover to allow light in without collecting rainwater or growing algae/mold.

Far more bang for the buck and far more "green" than CF bulbs that make everyone feel like they're doing their part, even when they're throwing them out in the trash...:rolleyes

Yes, CF bulbs save power, and that's great - but manufacturing and disposing of them negates their environmental friendliness...
