Call me when you're on your fourth:twofinger
1. 86 Jetta Wolfsburg - good times in high school, those big rubber bumpers did a number on trash cans in my town :Party
2. 97 Gti 2.0 was my college car
3. 03 Gti 1.8t was my after college car that I modified quite a bit and was pretty quick
4. 07 Rabbit 2.5 - the first automatic transmission i've bought. My gf told me if I got an automatic she would drive more often. She's driven it twice and I'm stuck with an automatic.:mad
Sprinkled in between was an 88 mazda 626 and a 06 mini cooper. The mini was a super fun car, manual, but it was sloooooooooooow. I shouldve gotten an S in hindsight, but at the time I needed new wheels (I had just moved out here, my uncle let me drive an old beat up pickup he owned and wasnt even street legal).
So yes, I love me some european cars. Have you visited VWVortex?

My first car was a '72 Squareback, and I have dated a couple of girls with V-Dubs. My 2nd ex had a '81 Scirocco then an '88 Jetta 16v GLI (loved that car). 3rd ex had a '00 Jetta GLS, and current wife had an '01 Jetta GLS. My dad and bro have had a plethora of Type I and Type III's. I'd love to have a pre-'68 Notchback.

FAIL! :rofl :laughing
Yes, if you're a guy that is stuck in a lot of traffic, I'm sure the psuedo-manual would be a better choice, I just couldn't do it. I love my fully manual transmission car. I love having absolute 100% full control over the engine. No matter what Audi/VW says, the DSG will eventually take over if you try to do some outlandish crap with it. However those quick up-shifts are imposible to match with the regular 6-speed manual. :thumbup
Oh and another thing with the DSG, the maintenance costs suck royally! :thumbdown

that DSG is one hell of a FAST Auto. if yoiu want to call it that. as for the manual trans- well a clutch is going to hit me in the $3000 mark all because the 6sp Is APITA to remove so many hrs to remove it:thumbdown. I have heard of several clutche's going boom but not one DSG. Cant be that bad.

DSG has clutche(s) in it too. the difference is there is a computer actuating it instead of your foot. it's an automated manual, unlike 'tiptronic' and the other manualized autos with torque converters.
so, not only will you have to replace the friction parts at some point, you'll have to pay to replace the brain that will fail eventually. a regular manual trans, foot operated, is subject to human error thus you've heard of 6 speeds fail when johnny ricer blows a shift, or slips the clutch too much.
i'm with ch47dmechanic, gimmie full control, i know how to operate a clutch. i'm curious to see how long the computer can get a clutch to last vs a human that doesn't abuse the clutch.

We have the 6sp and its nice and all, but after driving the with the DSG I love that trans- spendy to keep running??? that is what a Warranty is for:laughing

I take it you've had a rebuild? My daily (when not riding my bikes) is an '88 Milano Verde. The motor died at 165k (factory bearing failure) and I had it rebuilt with "S" cams and "S" pistons. Running strong at 217k now.

That's what I expected to see in this thread. European car enthusiast means the classics: MG, Alfa, Porsche. I'm still sad I had to sell my gtv 1750.
The GTI works for transportation but still....

Oh that's Euro, and it's not you. that was a general whine about the state of the world and, y'know, how the store always has everything except what one crazy person wants? i was hoping there'd be some sort of wacky variety (including of course and especially a Trabi).
... nothing ever includes a Trabi, though. i should know better. but i don't.
Not me! Oh! NM, still crazy though. WHEE!
