I'm down for a round sometime. I usually shoot about 90-95. Not bad for starting 8 months ago and still searching for that elusive first birdie :mad Did you get you residence card yet?

Its way more fun when you play at a course. When playing at a course, just remember to keep up with the group in front of you or let the group behind you play through (if they're waiting on you).

You shouldn't even be touching a driver until you can consistently hit your 6 or 7 iron.
Sure! JMack has been tempting me to go play and kick his butt so I'll drive all the way for some golf. Besides, it's gotta be cooler down there than up here.

yeah. found that out yesterday .... :)
i was told to look at tgw.com for some good deals. found a set for around 300 that would be good for a beginner
^ well if you're going to be shopping online, then ebay is a good bet. Like everything else, you gotta know a little bit about the product. Shipping costs might be high but it's accepted. www.edwinwattsgolf.com is reputable as well. Look for the clearance stuff, as the new stuff might be a tad high. Since you're in Sac too there's Wide World of Golf and Tennis off Fair Oaks near the Pavillions. Good stuff there.

Count me in, just started playing again after years off. Used to play alot back in high school(was on the team) and lets just say my currents skill level is an embarrasement! haha. I'm down to catch a 9 hole shorth course with some of you guys so I can get back in the swing off things before venturing out to the big dog courses again.

Don't worry about how far you can hit it. Just make sure that whatever distance you hit it is consistent. When you get out on the course on a 150-yard par 3, you want to say that you hit your 7-iron 150 yards. You don't want to pull out your 7-iron wondering if you're going to get 125 yards or 150 yards.

Exactly. Ego is a bad thing on a golf course. If you consistently hit a 7 140ish and you're inside the white pin on the golf course, the 7 should be the club you grab... no hestitation (unless of course there's wind and other factors). Depending on what I ate that day, how well I'm swinging, how tight my shoes are, I'll hit a 7 about 150. No more.. no less.
Now... 125 to 150 is quite variation for a 7. Swing the club about 80% of your ability. Don't hit all out. Save some. Then create or guesstimate an average of what that club does so when the time comes and you need to hit that 140 yd shot, that the 7 is there for ya. Lemme know if you wanna go out. I'm probably hitting worse now than ever since I'm playing tennis too much.
And older Wilson's are fine. If they're blades and you can play those instead of cavity backs, you're fine. Don't fork out cash for clubs unless you're serious. Golf is one sport that can get expensive real fast.

Here's another tip that will save you a lot of money on the range too. You need to learn to do the exact same thing before every shot. Your pre-shot routine needs to be identical whether you're on the course or if you're at the driving range. It helps build muscle memory, and it will help you calm down when you're in the course. If you watch Tiger Woods or any other PGA tour player, each of them has a slightly different pre-shot routine, but they all have one that they use on every shot.
A lot of beginners tend to get away from this on the driving range, and they end up blowing through a large bucket in 10 minutes effectively wasting 75% of the bucket. The pre-shot routine will make that bucket last much longer, and it will settle down each and every swing. Just like on the golf course, you need to get to the point where every swing at the ball even on the driving range counts. You don't want to just get over the ball and swing.
My pre-shot routine is this:
1. Stand a few feet behind the ball and look for an intermediate target between your target and the ball. (typically 3 - 6 feet in front of the ball.)
2. Move up next to the ball but 2 feet away.
3. Take 2 practice swings.
4. Move forward and align club with ball with left hand only.
5. Step forward and align with feet together.
6. Move left foot into position.
7. Move right foot into position.
8. Grip club with both hands.
9. Look up and reverify alignment with intermediate target.
10. Take two breaths.
11. Swing.
I do this before every single shot on the course and on the driving range. You need to pick a routine and stick to it.
We'll talk about swing thoughts later....

thanks wannabe. makes sense. ill def do that also.
i do have a question on foot placement, where is the ideal foot place. right now my front(left) foot is slightly in front on the ball, and my back foot is about shoulder length
For me it depends on the club. A driver you can play off your front foot (your left if you're right handed) and move the ball back accordingly to the right foot as you reach the PW or SW. Most people will play a PW or 9 in the middle of their stance, that's fine.
As for ranges, Ancil is fine since you're local to it. For me, it's way out there. Haggin is great as during the summer months it's open 24 and during business hours the golf shop is open to try clubs out.
From the things I have heard I don't know if I'd go on rides with some BARFers, but I am always up for golf.
We can play. It depends as some of us are up here in Sacramento and some are down in the Bay. But if you wanna practice at Haggin since they're open 24 for the summer, just PM me. I'm down.

hey whats a good cheap course in the Sacramento area?

what do u consider cheap? there is antelope creek which is around 20 bucks i think lol
or u can drive to indian creek which is 12 or so lol
woodcreek is nice, cost around 60 for a cart and tee time i think
Depends on cheap. Lots of coupons in the Bee but with daylight getting shorter, you have to start around 3pm to finish 18. I'm in EG so for me it's Bartley, Emerald Lakes, Forest Lake, Wildhawk to an extent. But for 9 you shouldn't pay more than $20 for walking.
If you're playing 18, make a day out of it and spend around $50/cart. Walking is nice and true golf but I'm in for the pleasure and I'll get tired around the 13th hole if I'm not playing well.
La Contenta is a personal fav. Lockeford Springs... Apple Mountain...

I just played Poppy Hills (no, not Poppy Ridge in Livermore. Poppy Hills, the badass course in Monterey!) last Friday.
If I wasn't the worst putter in the history of the world, I probably would have shot in the 80s.
^ Very nice. Pricey? Nicey? I think playing somewhere close to the ocean down there is a pilgrammage all golfers should do.

It wasn't horrible, considering the course. 85 bucks with a cart.

Agreed. Everyone needs to go down there if they can. I just played Pebble Beach on friday, yes...the Pebble Beach...and it was freaking amazing! There is nothing like it in the world, honestly. Obviously, pricey, but it's absolutely incredible. And like MikeV, if I wasn't the world's worst putter, I would've hit the 80s, instead I shot a 90. Oh well, I discovered a lot of things that I can fix. And if you can, play with a caddy. They give you absolutely invaluable tips about everything from reading putts to distance to pin to your swing, and even know the history of the course/all about it so they can just chat about who lives where/what sections are in movies, etc.
So, if you can, every golfer should play Pebble in their lifetime. I wish I had gotten the chance to play Spyglass, Poppy Hills, Del Monte, or Spanish Bay, but I'm going back to college, so I didn't have the time to stay down there.
I will definitely go back if I get the chance, no question. It's an experience like no other...seriously. The views are absolutely incredible, the course is obviously one of the best on the planet, and it's an experience I will never forget.
Note: Be ready when you go because it's a LOT harder than the pros make it look :p
Here's a few samples of the pictures I took...sorry about the crap quality, it's my iPhone...but you get the point. I took at least 50 pictures haha

I haven't played since College (which isn't that long ago, but it makes me sound older when I say that :teeth). I used to play on the HS and College teams, but when my music kicked off I'd have to say I haven't even hit the driving range since 2004 :cry . I'm kinda scurred to pick it up again. I remember how frustrated I'd get starting out lol. My deaths... many deaths.... lol
Gorgeous Pics of Pebble Beach btw. ^^

Mother fucker. I broke my 5 iron at the range today :cry
The damn thing just sheared off where the shaft goes into the clubhead :wow
I didn't even ground the club or hit something after getting pissed off. I was taking a normal swing and when I made impact I heard a loud ass PPIIIINNNNNGGGGG and when I looked up I saw the clubhead taking the same flight trajectory as the ball :(
Called Nike and they want like 40 bucks to send it in and reshaft, regrip, etc it since it's a 3-4 year old set of irons (seems like kinda bullshit to me, but eh.)
^ You might want to take it into the local shop and see if they can get a new shaft for it. If the broken tip can be taken out of the hosel then just get a new shaft for it. MMMM Rifle shafts.... But eh... it depends on if you're sweet with the 5 iron. I don't hit it cleanly enough to warrant using it all the time, probably around 180yds on avg but like you said, if they're old then the grooves might have worn down a bit.

Me and one of my friends play at least 3 times a month if not more we have the hook up with the sunnyvale courses either sunnyvale muni (18-hole) or sunken gardens (9-hole) someone should chime in if they feel the need to haphazardly whack balls.

Woot! Got my 5 iron back.
I need to get out and actually play a round. Tired of just going to the range.
