Hey there, I am sure this question has been answered many times but I couldn't find a thread about it. I picked up a used sv but the guy had already chopped the rear plate holder up. He was using the rear tail light as a license plate light. I figure this won't be legal so I was going to get a rear fender eliminator kit, but i didn't see any with a light on them.

Is it ok to mount plate just in front of the shock and what have you seen to light these plates?

I am used to racing these bikes, not so much customizing them for the street.:(

if it's way down under the tail, expect to get a ticket for it.

you can get plate frames with lights in them, you may want to get one... I don't remember where I saw it though.

you also need reflectors, which were most likely removed.

you can get liscence plate bolts with lights, or seperate lights specifically for it, look at cyclegear for the motrax light

What he said.

I don't know if Motrax makes a fender eliminator kit for the SV, but I know all the other Motrax kits come with a license plate light so it's still legal.
Or you can buy the light separately.
Or you can buy license plate light bolts, which I think are pretty cool.

You need one reflector to be legal. That's it, that's all. This has been discussed many times.

See:

and:

24601. Either the taillamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear license plate during darkness and render it clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. When the rear license plate is illuminated by a lamp other than a required taillamp, the two lamps shall be turned on or off only by the same control switch at all times.

However, I'm pretty sure you're wrong.

That's not what he was talking about. He said reflectors. See quote above. Motorcycles only require one on the rear. Review V.C. 24607

Read into your post wrong. Boo me.

24607. Every vehicle subject to registration under this code shall at all times be equipped with red reflectors mounted on the rear as follows:

(a) Every vehicle shall be equipped with at least one reflector so maintained as to be plainly visible at night from all distances within 350 to 100 feet from the vehicle when directly in front of the lawful upper headlamp beams.

(b) Every vehicle, other than a motorcycle or a low-speed vehicle , manufactured and first registered on or after January 1, 1965, shall be equipped with at least two reflectors meeting the visibility requirements of subdivision (a), except that trailers and semitrailers manufactured after July 23, 1973, that are less than 30 inches wide, may be equipped with one reflector which shall be mounted at or near the vertical centerline of the trailer. If the vehicle is equipped with two reflectors, they shall be mounted as specified in subdivision (d).

No sweat. I've been stopped three times so far with this bike by the CHP for not having side reflectors. I swear no one in the CHP is familiar with 24607. :rolleyes
