Don't you guys have White Sharks up there? My cousins live in Salinas and they surf. What kind of board do you ride?

I've got two long boards, 1 Russo, 2 short boards. I am terrible on the short ones! Can't cut to save my life. lol. Its fun to try though! I love the long ones best! They will catch anything! Even the smallest. Do you like your Fish? They look like they would ride well. I haven't tried one out though. Good luck feeding the sharks! Isn't there an Island up there that they breed at? Farallon Islands, I think its called. You are crazy to surf up there. That's what So-Cal is for.

Don't count your chickens in SO CAL. The last 2 white shark deaths were in the southern part of the state.

OK Don't hate me for this...
I work a shark boat from September to November
The most hit upon decoy is the surfboard one of the mates found floating out near the Farallons.

2!! I only know of one and everyone (experts) agreed that she was lost! White Sharks don't like our water. The only real dangerous ones we have is the blue shark but they are in deeper water.

I want to go cage diving for my next anniversary. I think that would rock, but first I have to get my deep dive certificate. Next on my to do list. Did you feed the sharks?

Here's the thing about GW's only the boys come out in odd years the girls come back in even years. The womenz sharks are larger and more aggresive but the boys have two peanors so they stay pretty pissed of and hungry all the time.
I have a few DVD's of these things that I took. It is raw, powerful, and brutal; hard to watch gory stuff
Now back on topic best surfing thread ever!!!

I used to surf at Pacifica and set up my scooter with a rack made for bicycles. It worked fine on the Yamaha as long as I remembered to put my left foot down. Now, I have a boogie board because I can't get out to the beach as much as I need to improve. Surfing is similar to twisties except sometimes the road just ends. . .oh and sharks are a potential hazard, they don't call it "The Red Triangle" for nothing. It's like any wilderness experience, you try to manage the risk to a level you feel comfortable with and then push it a little at a time. Is it worth the risk? Let me put it this way: Whenever I approach a beach I still get an indescribable feeling inside as I get closer, and when I enter the water, I feel as if I belong there, as if the "real world" is an illusion, and the only thing that matters is the present, and "the present" is another wave to catch, and even that is only an excuse to be in the water for a time. The ocean for us is home, nothing less. Surfers are our brothers and sisters and we have alot to learn from each other.

What planet are you from? In the few short years I've been riding motorcycles I've made more life-long friends than I have in the 20-plus years I've been surfing.

We surfers are a territorial tribe, I have the scars to prove it.

Surfing makes people crazy.....I've had a doctor act like a 4 year old and argue over a wave, then try to fight on the beach.......it's like being a caveman out there, fighting over food.

Yep they're scary.
They actually articulate their teeth (all three rows plus) So when you watch up close it's worse than anything imaginable.
Like a train wreck it's impossible not to keep looking.

Totally depends on where you surf..like Bolinas for instance; very mellow, hardly any bad vides. Any wave in Santa Cruz; get ready for an asshole to give you shit, slash your tires, and steal the wallet off your front seat.

I used to go surf at 5:30 AM to avoid the crowds, or pick a less popular break. I do the same thing on the twisties, I go out early. The ocean is a plastic medium in constant flux. To think that you can "own a break" is like trying to fence the sky. Of course, some people will try. Newbies to a break should respect the locals and pay their dues, it's part of the initiation process, but there's another dimension on this planet that some people can not see.

Apt. I'm feeling mellow today since I headed up north on 1 and did Skaggs for the first time on a lark, and on the goat trail part near the coast I melded with my motorcycle for the first time and dragged my left foot for a fraction of a second and the road was pretty empty and I put more miles on in one day and maybe it's not alot to someone else but it's still 239 miles and I'm playing The Beatle's Magical Mystery Tour because the song "Blue Jay Way" kept playing inside my head this week and I still don't know why, but Damn! It's good to be alive!

That is beautiful! Its a nice feeling isn't it. I've never had any problems on the line or anywhere else. I keep some cash on me to pitch in for repairs if I ever manage to hit someone. Territorial? Jeeze, where in the world do you surf? Everyone is mellow down here. The only problem I've ever had is turning down all the pot that gets offered. You are hanging with the wrong crowd if you've got scars over waves Beauregard and SurfAwave69. That's sad. It gets really peaceful out there like a nice night ride through the mountains with a full moon and a lake beside the road. The only thing I like better then surfing is snorkling. Riding bikes with my friends and family is number one though. Just watch out for sharks out there. (cagers can be compared to sharks yes?)

I have been surfing the coast for about 8 years now, I have encountered the assholes, and the good guys alike....seen a few sharks here and there but have never had any issues...I was in the water when a swimmer was attacked and killed at Avila Beach a few years back as well....Sharks really are not a major concern, the amount of attacks and sightings doesnt even compare to the amount of days Ive surfed. When I lived in San Luis Obispo I was surfing 4-5 days a week and in that time frame saw 2 sharks and there was that 1 attack. In the last couple months on my moto Ive ridden 3 days a week or so, seen 3 single moto accidents, 2 collisions, and have heard of numerous fatalities....sharks really cant be compared to cagers because we are entering the sharks world and they are doing what they were made to do....\\

surfing is by far the single best thing I have ever done, it has made me who I am, and has helped me through the worst times of my life. The ocean is a cure all for me, and the sharks, I guess, are just a part of my love for the ocean, the wave, and the ride.

Amen to that Sloryder, when my father past away 2 years ago I was a mess, my hubby took me to the ocean and we just sat there watching the seals and the waves and the surfers while the sun went down. I so needed that. I can't imagine living where I can't surf.

Surfing has got me past some real bad times also,I guess its because when you enter the water you are not in control,a motorcycle you can always pull over, out there that set wave will always come and you have to deal with it,this is why when out in the ocean all else fades away...I lost my dad a few years back he was the guy who got me into surfing for many reasons...its not a hobby its a way of life..I could never move far from the coast, just yesterday we singed papers on a one year lease out at as house in bodaga bay so now I will be able to do both my loves..I will now have a old beater car out there and my boards,so now I can ride my bike out skaggs down the coast to the house and hop in the car and go surf..Im super stoked to be able to do this at this point in my life...surfing is what keeps me going...non surfers just dont understand but the ocean for a surfer is realy like most going to church!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!once a real surfer always a surfer I belive..my dad never entered the water that I can ever remember but we could sit and talk and it was like he never stopped surfing,I would be haveing a crappy time in life and he would look at me and say just go surfing ...I would and than things would always work out....

I haven't surfed in over 2 months and I'm going crazy. I was living in Oahu for over 7 yrs just so I could surf. Nothing like driving dwn the hill on kam hwy and seeing the breaks off in the distance and knowing that it was going to be epic. Nothing like walking down that path from the dirt parking to Rocky Point and hearing the waves before you even got half way to the old ironwood tree. The waves here in the Bay Area have to be absolutely epic before I go for a paddle in this cold ass water -- I've been spoiled for way too long. Well, atleast now I don't have to catch a flt to do trackdays.

Karl,

You can buy a used board at the local surf shop near any surf spot. I would recommend going to Cowell's Beach first though and learn how to surf longboards there. Anywhere else is very localized. You can rent a board for 20 - 30 bucks with the suit at the Cowell's beach surf shop near the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Lemme know if you wanna check it out. I can show you how.

And it just didn't click. People kept saying "stick with it, it will click" and I never got the hang of it. I got tired of the long drive to surf from Concord and sold the giant softtop to another beginner and started skateboarding again instead.(I live 5-30 min from 5 good skateparks). But after a couple years of skating, I'm interested in trying the surf again. Anyone want to chapperone (sp?)a trip to Cowell for the noobs?

I grew up surfing Norcal from Salmon Creek on down to Pacifica. Out of Cali I've surfed baja and the Philippines. Surfing is like riding a motorcycle its awesome when you carve a good line. One of the best feelings you can get in the world.
