so i have a buddy that has been riding dirt bikes for years. he had passed his msf and aqcuired his license about 6 months ago. when he first passed his class i let him ride my bike around for practice and geez he's a better rider than i am. so here's the question. about a month ago we went to go check out bikes knowing he does not have good credit because he got into nasty situation with his family. he's always on time on his bills just giving a credit card to a family member isn't a good thing. so he could not qualify to get a bike. so here's the deal, i actually just bought the bike under my name and he's riding it, paying insurance on it, just the registration is not in his name. so i'm still waiting for the papers and plates from gp so i can add him as a registered user but until then can he get in serious trouble if he were to get pulled over? would i get in trouble if he were to get pulled over? he's paying insurance and paying for the bike, i've known him since we were kids so i fully trust him. and on top of that gp had given us a temp registration which is almost expired and i had called them about the plates they said it won't come in until another month. please help any feedback and advice would be really helpful. thanks all. and by the way i'm also new to the forums :p

As long as the bike is registered (doesn't matter who to, as long as permission is given to ride it) and insured to him, he's legal. "My" car is in fact registered to my father, but I've driven it 35k since he last drove it. It's insured in my name though, and that's all that matters.

what about the fact that the temp registration is gonna expire soon and i was told i will not be getting the plates for another month? possibly 2 months?

Was this a new bike? Were the registration fees paid? I don't think you have anything to worry about there. Everyone has to wait for plates from the DMV when buying a new vehicle.

The registration not in his name is no big beal. DMV is typically slow in getting paperwork out, and most dealers wait until they have a stack of paperwork before they make their appointment to deal with the DMV.

Just want to clarify though that your buddy has taken out insurance in his name on the new bike? Yes? If the insurance is in your name, and he is paying the bills, is his name on the bike as an insured rider? If not, and it is insured in your name, and he bins it, it is very likely that the insurance won't cover the bike.

You're not thinking well for doing this. Let your buddy sort his own shit out.
