what are some tires that have decent tread life? Has to come in 120/70/17 and 150/60/17.

I bought my bike with almost brand new pilot power tires, 3,000 miles later the rear tire is worn out, front still looks like it can take about 6,000 more miles though.:thumbup

I run 27psi front and rear for most of my riding, 24 psi if I'm going to ride some technical roads:ride

I already ordered a replacement rear michelin tire, since the front is still good and I don't want to mix and match brands. I'm going to stick with the michelins until I have to replace both tires. But at $145 for a rear, changing them every 3,000 miles is going to get very pricey.

that's the price to pay if you wana play.

3K sounds about right for "fun" and "spirited" riding.

The problem is that if you go with a harder tire, yeah - you get more miles, but you'll have to keep the corner speed (=fun) down or you'll soon reach the end of the traction.

so... either pay up and get good rubber, or slow down and run sport/touring tires.

(ouch, ouch.... on my 1800 "cruiser", a set of "good rubbers" runns more like $300+ just for the 240 rear, and i shred them in 2500 miles)

continental road attack last pretty good
no problems in keeping up with faster riders on pilot powers, no slipping
except on gnarly trails and water crossings ;)

what kind of mileage did you get out of the rear tire?

Most of my riding is done within the city, so I use up a lot of the center, the michelin tires wore through the center real quick.

I do more straight line riding than twisties. And when I do some spirited riding, I don't ride that aggressively.

My husky came with the Dunlop 208's and after 1500 miles they were completely toast. I got the Pilot Powers instead and hope to get some good life outta 'em. I was getting bout 4k miles on a 180 pilot power on my R6... if I could get 3k out of these... I'd be very happy. http://www.derbycycles.com/cgi-bin/...39880.84391&pid=3142&product=Michelin&count=1 is by far the cheapest place I've found for Michelin's. Cycle Gear sometimes matches your price.... I think i paid $128 for mine from them.

sm seem to burn out tires quickly, its just what happens.

the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long and sms burn so very brightly

3600 miles out of the first rear, which seemed weird to me
my second rear is at 4000 miles and looks like it has AT LEAST another 2000 miles to go.
front lasted 7000 miles and after today's ride I'm on the wear bars on it.
my riding includes mostly:

There isn't any sport touring 150/60-17 tire in the market as far as I know.

I put 150/70-17 and 160/60-17 Metzeler Z6 on my DRZ.

Both last ~10K miles, 150/70-17 fits better than the 160, and the Z6 is plenty grippy for me.

I tried stickier M1 and Contiforce SM tires, but got tired of the fast burn rate.

yeah I have the conti SM's right now too...I just know they're gonna go quick. Might try thos road attack ones next

Please consider 3,000 on a rear tyre good mileage, consider the tyre wear part of the cost of having fun. Both you and your XR deserve good sticky rubber. I got about 2,000 out of my BT090 on my 690SM on the rear and will get about the same from the BT014 that took it's place. I will probably put BT016's on both ends soon. Sorry the BT016's don't come in 150.

I put a sport touring BT020 on my CBR1100XX, got great tire mileage out of it and just hated the damn thing most of the time. I'm loving the BT016 that replaced the BT020 and will just live with the tire mileage because nothing in life is free.

I have to replace my Contiforce SMs soon. They've more than 6500 miles on 'em and the wear bars on the rear are finally showing.

Have you called around to the local shops to find out if the tires you're interested in are in stock at the warehouses?

Apparently availability is a problem right now. I was told certain brand tires wouldn't come in until mid- to the end of October.
