i think likely or BTB would be the best people to respond but the latest ver. of premiere (i think it's ver 7 now) would probably work. I have 6 (i think..) if you want to try that.

For a card I would just buy one with the Cheap software to start off with. I got my card with software for around $25. The software works good for making clips for the web but not much more. I have a lot of DV software, Pinnacle, Premeire 6 and Ulead. I like Premiere the best but it's also the most difficult. I didn't know Premiere 7 was out I'll have to go hit up kazaa.
Let me know if you want to try out any software.

I tried one of those combo packages with software and a card and it wouldn't work with 3 of my computers. the software always said the card wasn't present but it was loaded as a device with no problems. i just got back from frys and gota 1394 card. i bought pinnacle studio 7, but don't really want to crack it open since it was 99 bucks. i'm gonna try to find it on kazaa first. thanks for the help.

That's strange I've bought two of those combo packs and have not had problems with them on quite a few computers. I would def. not open the Pinnacle, Kazaa should have it. Have fun!
The capture cards are only like $25?! I gotta get one.

I bought the Adaptec combo package that came with software, the 1394 wire and the card for about 70 bucks, per advice from Likely and have had ZERO problems with it. I dont use the software, even though its basic and easy to use, I'm trying to learn Premiere. Good Luck!!!
What inputs does the card have? Coax and RCA? Or just RCA jacks?

I think the cheap cards only have iLink (firewire). Actually, I could be wrong, but I think that's all they have. I think you might be able to get a more expensive card w/ Analog (or S-Video) out to shoot it to your TV or VCR.

All the have is IEEE 1394 (Firewire) If I want to put anything analog onto my Comp I just record it through my camcorder.
