View Full Version : front brake and throttle at the same time

Is there a correct technique to apply front brake and throttle at the same time?
I want to isolate braking and throttle so I can do any combination of, release brake, more throttle; or more brake, less throttle; or more brake and more throttle. It's starting to get more and more interesting.

dang mr. k. can't wait to see how your doing now with your stunting...

I find that if I grip the throttle with my index and thumb wrapped around the bar I can use my middle, ring, and pinky to apply the front brake. Works like a charm... oh course, I'm not sure what your doing, but I can only apply so much throttle this way.
Thanks go to Mr. Crash for telling me about that one!

Correct technique?? I dont know about correct but when I do my burn outs in a circle or standing for that matter, I first pull in front brake then use my pointy finger and thumb to modulate the throttle, so I leave 3 fingers on the brake lever. Good Luck and be safe!!!!

Instance, that works if you want to lock the front wheel completely. For rolling burnouts and especially 180 or 360, both the brake and the throttle must be modulated.
I've been doing what infrandom said but I was wondering if there were a better way.

all these techniques work for both standing and rolling burnouts. I personally hold the brake with my index and middle finger and use my thumb, ring and pinky on the throttle. to modulate you just let off or apply more of either of the 2.

I do it the same way has BTB. I feel I get the most control that way. I guess it really all just depends on how you learn.

The real trick is under HARD braking (e.g. turn 10 at t-hill) blipping the throttle as you downshift! Mr. K, I think infrandom and instance said the same thing, just different ways. BTB and Port, you guys are sick -- I gotta try it that way sometime. I also do index and thumb on throtlle, brake w/ middle, ring, and pinky.

You don't find yourself braking into 10? Damn, can't wait to see you ride!!

not much at all... a tiny bit of rear brake to settle the bike in and then hard on the front as soon as I straightened out on the exit - and that was before my suspension getting done (picking up today!!)...
now I will say that it's possible I'm approaching a bit slower - I'll stick with that story if need be... :teeth

Wait... you MUST have the turns mixed up... you turn left through 9, crest the hill, aim for the outhouse, and you've GOT to be doing over 100 approaching, downhill no less, turn 10. I take it down 2 gears coming into 10, would be less (probably SHOULD be less) but I tap 4th instead or running 3rd out (too distracting at this point).
The distance between 10 and 11 is short enough to require only moderate braking like you described.
We on the same turn here??? :confused

oh trust me we're on the same turn... crest 9 and aim for THE MIDDLE OF THE TRACK at the crest, don't bother with the outhouse as you have to scrub more speed to make sure you line up once you can see it. 10 is a compression left hander and has just enough banking you can rip into it... the hard part is taking the right line in 11 so you don't go into the dirt on the inside of 12.... :twofinger:teeth
Hey - can you ride today? Call me on the cell - I'll PM you

I'd love to see that Chuci, let's get a BARF track day together.
I slam on the brakes and drop two (sometimes 1) going into ten, and rol on the gas through the turn, letting up on the gas on the short straight between 10 and 11, preferably no brakes unless I went into 10 hella hot, and slam it on it's side for 11.
I know I'm in triple digits between 9 and 10, so I cannot conceivably see myself wailing through 10 w/out getting on the brakes well before my turn in point
Anyway, would love to see how you do it. :D

I'll stick with my story.... esp since I've only done T-Hill once. I want to say I'm coming off of 9 in the 90's and in very low triple-digs approaching 10, most likely in 4th. Slight roll-off and very light drag on the rear brake to settle the bike before turn-in. For 11, I dropped to 3rd with heavy brakes...
I'm willing to make myself look like a :loser if I'm going that much slower than everyone else, but that was the only place I could pass Tillers consistantly that day... :shhh
::edit:: I started the day in C's and moved into B's for the afternoon sessions...

Take this talk to the track, us squids have no idea what the hell you guys are talking about:twofinger

I didn't know trackies are squidily also ;)
Anyways, I tried BTB method and it's actually alot more flexible. I find it easier for me to just use only the middle finger for the brake but that may change.
As far as 180, I think I need to give it more gas and less brake to bring it all the way around... the last time I give it more gas the bike dump so fast I didn't know what happened so I'm gonna back off a couple days until someone give some good tips.

Well, I successfully did a 180 yesterday. I was trying them but couldn't really figure out everyhting, like brake, throttle, which way to turn the wheel. The one I did was more of an accident because I gave it to much throotle and it ripped my right hand away from the clutch (not off the bars though) so I couldn't stop it right away and it ended up going all the way around. I could not duplicate though but I only tried it a total of 10 times. I also wasn't trying my hardest because I don't have a frame slider on my left side right and I didn't want to drop it. I should be able to get these down though.

so THAT's the trick... stopping with the clutch and even switching it to the other side :twofinger:teeth
