I would MAKE the CRF450R a motard.
It's like $5700, a vert is like $10k. Thats a LOT of left over money for SM mods. :D
Oh yea, I am with the mindset for track only. I don't really care about street, but I'm sure you could use the CRF legally if you put in the effort to trick DMV. ;)

Registration efforts aside, I've been told by many different sources that MX bikes are very high maintanence, and that CRF450's especially need lots of TLC whether or not you race/flog 'em.
Not to mention for $10k the vert comes with damned near everything you need for a street legal motard already.

How can a 4 stroke HONDA need a lot of TLC, whereas a Vert, a new european bike, wouldn't?
:confused
Pure Kafka!! :P

exactly. i started a thread about what makes the best motard. and the guys cam eback with 4 strokes for street and 2 strokes for race, basically.
too many oil changes and rebuilds when you put heavy commuter mileage on a 2 stroke mx racer.

Well, I do know that the guy at my last trackday had the nicest motard I've seen to date.
He had a kawi KLX650 (I think) with a yosh tuned engine(zook/kawi joint venture is a great thing), and every SM goodie available for his bike. Totalling over $13,000. His bike was freaking UBER!
Tony Meiring rode it and told me he was going to be getting one from Kawi in the near future.. :)
I think a CRF450R would be comparable, it IS a 4 stroke, so it would server street duty just fine. And I've seen them go around Buttonwillow pretty goddamn fast.
true but like joe said its not green sticker. you're not going to get any love from dmv in regards to that. otherwise i'd probably buy one as well :(
that kawi sounds sick.
stupid green sticker red sticker crap :( sucks on other forums there are guys all over the states with crf street legal motards. boo.

Yea the kawi was awesome.. I wanted to ride it, but then again if I binned it or lowsided, I woulda been up shit creek without a paddle.
I bet you could get a CRF450R plated, it just would require some diligence at the DMV, and some scouting out. Possibly bring an out of state one here that's already plated, and just do a transfer of title on it. :)

Everett,
A CRF Motard-converted will cost MORE, and will never be as good street Motard as the Vertemati or KTMs. It will be a very good race Motard but no good for street use. Why buy a bike that's not designed to be a Motard and try so hard to make it street worthy when other manufacturers such as Vertemati or KTM make bikes DESIGNED to be Motards?
As for the price, I don't know where you got these prices from but I'm sure you can work a deal with Joe for a street legal Vertemati Motard.
As an example, here is the new pricing for the 2004 KTMs. I don't see any $10K Motard anywhere, do you? :confused
Supermoto
450 SMC $6,898
525 SMC 2003 Aug. Release $6,898
625 SMC $6,298
660 SMC $6,998

Not really. If we are talking track usage, the CRF (or any race dirtbike) is great and yes it can be very fast with the right Motard parts (and a fast rider ;)).
But for street usage, you've got to look at other elements of the bike. How is the cooling system on the CRF? Small and no fan. What about the electrical system, electric start, lightning...? None. What about the oil capacity or gas tank capacity. Etc, etc...
Race dirt bikes (or race supermotards) are designed to be very fast for a short period of time (20 mins heats/races). Street bikes have other requirements that race bikes do not meet. A stock CRF is a great race bike. A stock KTM LC4 SM for example is a great street Motard. Am I making any sense here?

the CRF 450 would be a awesome motard, not on the street.
you have to rebuild the top end every 15 to 20 hours (rings)
every 100 hour it will need a piston and rings and head work.
oil and filter changed just about everytime you ride it.
if you have ever seen the inside of the 450 motor, the walls
of the cases are paper thin.
if the 450 had the same maintenance schedule as say the
XR650R or XR400R, i would be riding one right now.

some quick calculations based on a bare bones conversion project (ie., not including all the fluffy stuff like short front fender, guards, etc.):
*** CRF400R

it's a 5 speed
showa suspension?
red sticker
to motard it add minimum:
Wheels (when you can get 'em) $1500
Tires $200
Sprocket $50
Baja Kit $600
Brakes $500
Kickstand $20
___ $2870 for street
____$2200 for race (plus exhaust and you're not really gonna race with that stock suspension are you?)
street total $9369
race total $8699
** Vertemati S570 or S570E
retail $9800
6 speed
WP front forks & rear shock (a $3k item)
green sticker
Excel rims/ talon hubs
Light kit standard
Beringer 4 pot big disk front brake standard
Hydraulic clutch
electric start on E
*** Vertemati SR600 race
retail $11800
most of the above plus a few extra goodies and Akropovic exhaust, extra wide and long swing arm, etc.
Honda CRF400R 'street' total $9369
Honda CRF400R race total $8699
Vertemati S570 or S570E $9800
Vertemati SR600 race $11800
doesn't honda make that funky ecolectric car that i always see in the slow lane on 280?

I'm so owned in this thread.. I'll go hide in a hole or something. :(
I do love the Vert's don't get me wrong, just my understanding was that the CRF was a nice bike also. Guess I was wrong.
And I was referring to the Vert as the $10k motard.
I want one, but can't afford one just yet.

Pierre, you better post some pix of these 04 bikes, or at least their predecessors! ;)
I was thinking about getting an XR400, get two sets of rims, and use it for street and dirt. That'd be super TCG..
I have a KTM already too! I love it, just need to get a new shift cable, brake cable, and lets see... ride more!!!

Please eliminate me from your inquiries- it definitely wasn't me :teeth
And just to chuck in my 2c...
I would run a converted crf (or similar 450 4banger) as a track bike- the AMA rules favour the 450 class. That is if I were ever brave/competent enough to want to get on the track.
I definitely wouldn't run one as a road bike. 3000 miles is a plenty short enough service interval. Anything less would start to become a pain. 100 hour intervals would make me want to ride a different bike.

Andrew,
Have you seen the new 2004 KTM Supermotos (http://www.ktmusa.com/news/newsdetail.asp?id=1538&WO=8)? What do you think? I know the 450 abd 525 will be pure race bikes based on the SX but what about the 2 others? Do you know the difference between the 625 and 660? :confused
motostrano
07-22-2003, 03:55 PM
and we got 450 race and e-start motards coming in as we speak. Vertemati re-released the 450 bike in part due to the AMA 450 class and i'm hoping to get a racer riding in it as soon as we can in ama.

I understand the 625 is the works platform for those tracks that favour higher displacement than the 525sm. I'm not sure if the 625 uses the lc4 chassis or the 525 chassis. It gets the 'uncorked' lc4 motor with SXC pipe and keihin carb. Guz from MonoManiacs has one and converted it for street use- maybe drop him a line for more details.
The 660 is the successor to the 640, (which is what I have) and it's the street legal, corked and CARB compliant version with the Mikuni carb.

Cool! I hope they do well and you do well with them :teeth
It's a new and wide open market- there's plenty room for lots of marques- especially as the Japanese manufacturers are still on the fence.
I look forward to more news as you get them out and competing :thumbup
