View Full Version : questions about the Stockton Supermoto series

I'm going to give this supermoto thing a try. I'm planning on running my KTM 300mxc in the Novice or Sportsman class on the stock wheels. I have a line on a couple different sets of take-off tires that a friend has used in one or two previous races, so I'm all set from a bike perspective. I've also got some Vanson street leathers, so I'm cool on gear.

My questions are...

How many motos or heat races do they run for these classes? Is it just one or two qualifying heats then the main, or do they run a semi as well?

How many laps are the heat races and main?

For those of you who have ridden at Stockton before, how fast is the track? My KTM is geared pretty low. Am I ok at this track, or should I pony up a few extra $$'s for a smaller rear sprocket?

I don't know if I've got the time or finances this week to get prepped in time for this Sunday, but I'll try. I'll definitely be out there to watch. I do plan on making a practice day or two this month, and am entering the race on August 24th for sure.

Way to go Scott!!! I am expecting practice and race reports! ;)
I have no experience riding there, I just went as a spectator but Dave (Astrocreep) and Josh (jbirkle) should be able to help you. Typically SuperMotard tracks do not have very long straight lines...

they run one heat and one main per class

How many laps are the heat races and main?
8-10 lap heats
10-12 lap mains

The track is tight, as far as top speed is only about 70. I was running 13-51 on my drz with good results.

I'll be out there on the 27th....I'm #13 come by and say hey

Most people in the Novice class run 17's, and most in Sportsman run stock wheels. Having 17's definitely gives an advantage.

Turn 2 can be a bit slippy, but the straightaway lets you get enough speed to make up a bit for any slow-going through the dirt and any turns.

P.S. this is Illsender's girlfriend.

Alright, this is starting to come together. I scored a set of Pirelli MT90's last night. If I get time to put them on this week I'll be out there on Sunday.

The rules say to safety wire your drain plugs. How strict are they on that?

Dave, I'll look for you on Sunday.

They're pretty strict at tech. They want you to safety wire the drain plug and tape off (or use gorilla snot on) any sharp edges. Who knows why, but they won't let you register unless you do.

Correction on earlier post: Sportsman class only runs stock wheels...that's the difference between Sportsman and Novice.

The are very strict on this one,
what you need to do:
remove kickstand
tape sharp edges
remove or tape lights
Wire drain plug or plugs radiator and oil fill
flush green colant out use water wetter
Sliders, as I understand the do not want anything metal touching the ground if you crash. I'm using for my axles skate board wheels and an all thread rod through the axle. I have handle bar guards on my bike and I'm putting really trick machined sliders I made there and I have no clue what I'm going to do with my pegs.

They might hold off on the sliders since they didn't repave the track but I'm not going to take a chance and not be prepared.

Sportsman class requires 21 inch front wheel and stock rear.
Most mxers have 19's on both ends they do not qualify for sportsman.

Wow the quote button is neet.

Pierre, yes come out and cheer on all the dirty barfers. Maybe you'll add to my luck too.

I don't know my number yet but I'll ask for #974 since I already have those numbers on my bike from D-36.

If I'm not running #974 I'm still the guy on an '03 KTM 300mxc with black Vanson leathers and an Arai MX helmet running in novice or sportsman. There can't be too many of those.

Did I mention how excited I am? :teeth

Be careful what you ask for. Don't assume the luck he brings is good luck.

:teeth

Seriously you need to come out and watch Pierre!!;)

Great, that's all I need. Don't show that to my wife.

wife: "I don't like you racing, you might get hurt"
me: "You don't have a problem with me playing soccer, and I broke two ribs doing that this year"
wife: "maybe you shouldn't play soccer either"
me: "DOH!"

Seriously, my wife is a sweetheart. She loves this motorcycle stuff.

I look forward to meeting you guys.

To give you an idea of how hard core Dave is, he RODE his DRZ (street legal) from Santa Clara to Stockton to race on it!!!

Dave, do you put the DRZ on the El Camino now? Do you have a pic? :teeth

I don't have a pic here(I'm at work) but there is a pic floating around here on barf of my elk with the crf150 in it.

I GOTTA SEE THAT!!

Gotta love hard racing! Remember there are no mirrors and I don't have eyes the back of my head....I didn't see you until we hit, I was doing my line more wide than I would have if I was defending I didn't think you would catch up that fast since I passed you on the begining of the straight.

I had fun that weekend even after the crash pushing your buttons!:laughing :p :nerd

See you at the races
Dave
