I just came back from my vacation from Oahu and Kauai. I was blown away to know that helmets aren't required there. 90% of the motorcyclists I have seen there weren't wearing ANY protection. None! It was really weird seeing somebody on the highway in just a tank top, shorts and sneakers.

how about those big blala's riding cruisers in sunglasses and aloha shirts :p
my first dump ever was onto someone's front lawn off Kuhio on a motobecane. too fast went wide and just bailed. talk about lucky. funny thing is my dad following did the same thing (ahh the truth is now told Phil Sr. and Jr. earned the dump trophy at the same time)(and no we never told mom :laughing ).

i heard that Hawaiin riders acted pretty "squidly" by going helmetless. guess you're just another person to confirm it! so do the riders there ride aggressive or just kinda mellow in their tanktops and sunglasses?

this was decades ago in my teens. barely any bikes and what few there just cruised - no hurries braddah. if you sped down the street your neighbors would yell at you and if you didn't listen probably kick your ass later. and the whole freaking island would know about it :p
and hey, there was only the H1 freeway and speed limit was ->45<-.
sheeeit, it was a big deal when the first stop light ever was installed in Hilo know what I mean?
Hawaii was super laid back then. Now, places like Kalakaua Blvd. in Waikiki might as well be in South Beach Florida. Tourism both helped and ruined the Aloha State (double entendre intended).
Just try go find the lava tube waterslides. You ain't gonna' be successful. Locals Only! :teeth

I just moved here from hawaii... and the riders there are super squidly... absolutly no gear at all..... they all meet up at the gas station... at the beginning of kuhio.

ay Vento wassup brah where you from and what brings you to Cali? when I lived there HRP was just drag racing only. Is there a road course now? my last "apt" used to be smack in the middle of some fields after waipahu, almost ewa (and thankfully I could keep going to school in Aiea not Campbell!!!). It's a big hospital parking lot now?
Come up to the city Aug. 3 -4 for the Aloha Festival!

I lived in central Oahu in Waipio if you dont remember where that is its right before Miliani off the H2... the only real nice twisties i know was up at Tantalas... mad crazy scarey turns... so many people have eaten it on that road. But then again maybe there are some other roads out there worth checking out. I really dont know cus I didnt own a bike when I lived there... I only got to borrow my friends TL1000S.
No road course there yet at HRP.... they do SSCA and they did have nascar come out though... they used the airfield out there on Barbers Point if i remember right.
Which HS you go to???? And yah good thing you didnt go to Campbell cus its still ghetto... lol

Aloha Max and Vento! I enjoyed my stay in Hawaii. Didn't want to leave. Tears rolling down my face as my plane departed for SF. :cry Next time I'll rent a motorcycle. Kindda expensive though. Motorcycles (cruisers) were renting for about $70 a day depending on what kind you rent.
Definitely a lot of fun twisties up in the mountains. I think, cruising around the coast would be more enjoyable and relaxing. However, I would take caution as tourists are everywhere rubber necking.
I was suprised how much Waikiki is like a big Japan town. So many Japanese residents and tourists there. Most of the signs, menus and so forth there were also translated into Japanese.
It's true. There seems to be only one road going around the islands. The speed limit there ranged from 35 to 50 mph. Yeah, you better be careful. Cops there strictly enforce it. Besides, you don't want to be confronted by the HUGE Hawaiian natives!

From what my friends are saying about hawaii since i left last year they now have the radar with photo... and they mail yah a ticket now if you get caught speeding over 55mph on H1... As if the traffic wastn bad enough before now this... you dont move faster than 45 or so from what I hear. Man I wish I still lived in hawaii though... I truelly miss the island. But I just couldnt find a good enough paying job out there to make it worth living out there.

Howzit all!!
Man, reading this thread makes me want to go home!! Next trip is this coming August! I'm a Local Boy who moved up to the mainland around 1980 and usually make at least 4 or 5 trips a year. Just got a house up there (Kalihi...but good side of Kalihi ;) ) and in the process of remodeling it.
When I went up there this past May I did notice most of the sport riders there were pretty much gearless but I must defend some of the local riders there that some do indeed wear gear (myself included)....most of the time. Local city groups did push for a helmet law several times but the problem is the tourist industry shot them down everytime.
It seems none of the haole or japanese tourists would rent scooters and such if there was a helmet law. None the less wearing gear is up to the individual and I see Hawaii becoming like the mainland as far as fatalities and such because of the this new 'fad' with stuntin' on local freeways. And because of the no helmet required law I think they will have more fatalities.
Still, when I'm at home (Hawaii) I've been known to ride without gear to grab a quick plate lunch at Rainbows or Bobs BBQ!! Squidly? Yes!! Irresponsible? Maybe. Once I get off the plane the Aloha spirit hits me and its all 'shoots brah' from there. No worries brah, Bob's BBQ just down the road.....

hawaii loves spam (musubi). I admit I still buy some time to time. good with rice or eggs when you just want to grind quick :) (same can be said about kamaboku I guess) but the spam is just so unhealthy in large quantities is even worse. heart disease and too high cholesterol runs plenty high for islanders with such diets.
J-town does indeed sell spam sushi! Check the Maruwa Store!

Yes, Spam is bad for you! Don't go nuts on it folks. I usually break open a can if there is nothing else to eat. I am still not sure what goes in Spam. I guess, it's best NOT to know. It might be some cow's snout.
Thanks for the info Max! I will surely pay the Maruwa Store a visit!

I went to Oahu and stayed in Waikiki. I also went to Kauai and stayed somewhere near the Fern Grotto.
I truly enjoyed my stay. Funny how you can almost see the entire island in just two to three days. Most of the time, I just relaxed. Just floating around in the water just like you said. Oooohh... The water was warm and pristine! Everyone has to see the Na Poli coast in Kauai (in a Zodiac raft). It was absolutely breath taking!
I actually smell like sunscreen! I was slapping it on thick. I wanted to tan not burn. It was so hot when I was there that you could feel your skin burning.

I believe you. I got the chance to chat with an Oahu (Waikiki) native. She complained that the laws around Oahu revolves around the tourists. Tourists must be kept happy and enticed to keep them coming back and back and back... She felt she couldn't do anything about it. It pays her bills. She said tourism is the number 1 industry of Oahu.
I don't think all is lost though. Kauai is pretty rural. (I haven't seen the other islands yet.) I don't think they even have a downtown. It's just you, the mountains, the sugarcanes and the wild chickens. All you can do is relaaxxx...

Nice Island feel to the bike..I have been a Island squid more than once..rode a old Harley with floor boards and ape hangers to Hana and then on around on the dirt "don't take a vehicle on it"
road back..with a passenger..in shorts and a tank top and
t-shoes.. no helmet..tip toeing down the loose lava gravel down hill and horespowering up the up hills on the gas slidng the beast. The ape hangers and floor boards gave me a motocross stand up position so I could work it. Hit a huge boulder in the middle of the road (cased it on the engine) and flew in the air..great save if I do say so myself..the battery ended up in my lap and the thing emitted sparks all the way back to the shop...told 'em they gave me a screwed up bike :twofinger " the battery came loose"..This was when they did not have new ones like they do now...I was 37 or so at the time so I guess I am not older and wiser :laughing

depends on which island you're on i guess. i used to live on oahu, the main island where honolulu is.
the roads are ok...but there's a lot of traffic during rush hour and you can't lane split. you just sit there. it really sucks to ride there during traffic hours.
there are some nice scenic roads to ride on...but the island is only so small. so, i guess it does get boring after a while...

Definitely. Plus Hawaii is on lockdown for speeders. It only takes a couple of hours at most to ride around the island and there aren't any technical roads. Big Island might have some better roads (and longer) but I've never personally road on the Big Island.

The Aug meet is going to be a BBQ.
Think about it, we have 500 registered BARFies, Plus significant others, plus rug rats, dogs :teeth , that size of event is HUGE, with a HUGE amount of work to set up

Eh I kno need speak pigion to get da kamaaina rate brah.... Its all about knowing people who work in the Hotel industry... and since one of my ex gf's over there has a real good friend who is now a GM of one of the Outrigger hotels.... Means I can get a really good rate if I wanna stay in a hotel room.
