Ok Guys.

Just picked up a 2001 KLR650 cheap. It's got a rod knocking. I took an oil sample and did a flame check last night. Brand new oil but sparkly flame. I'm guessing he ran it out of oil and shut it down before it locked up. I'm also guessing, since compession is good and It's going through the gears smooth and quiet that the damage is confined to the bottom end. I think at worst I'll need new mains, a crank pin, rod bearing and maybe a new rod. Since it'll be apart, I'll go ahead and bore the top and do the head just for giggles and grins.

I've found all kinds of sources for wider rear and 17" front and spokes. Who can you recommend, locally, to lace the wheels?
This front rim is barely wider than a bicycle rim. Scary.
The suspension was reworked by the previous owner and I'm happy with it So...... Any other ideas, tips?

Thanks guys.

Recommended rim widths are 3.5" out front to mount a 120 tire and out back a 4.25" with a 150 or 4.5" with a 160 depending on your chain clearance.

Or you can be like me and run a 160 on a 4.25 and take the slightly more 'rounded' profile you get with that combination.

I'm sure that if you have a good accessory shop locally who sells DIRT KIT and is accustomed to customers with wire wheels, they should be able to hook you up with a wheel builder.

Or try Joe at Motostrano in RWC (motostrano here on barf) he must know a wheelbuilder.

And welcome to MonoManiacs :teeth
