Hi. I too own a 1997 Yamaha YZF600, but there is a slight problem. The self diagnostic feature on the bike has registered a problem in the fuel sender circuit, and I have been unsuccessful in locating the trouble. Before I launch into what I have done to try to fix the problem, let me state what I am asking for first: I would sincerely appreciate it if some generous BARFer with a YZF600 (1996 to 2000, I believe) in or near Berkeley would allow me to come over and, under your supervision, temporarily swap the ignitor unit and the starter circuit relay from your bike to mine. This is not an invasive procedure, the relay is just under the seat and the ignitor unit just under the tank- it shouldn’t take more than an hour. I am not going to try to take your parts or attempt to buy them off you. The reason why I would like to check these parts before replacing them is that the ignitor unit alone is $400, and there are no returns if it turns out there was nothing wrong with the original anyway. Thus I want to make sure that there is something wrong with these parts before I replace them.
Anyway, please give me, Jeremy, a call at (510) 384-4347 or email me at jeremy_rock@hotmail.com if you can help me out. Thanks!
What follows is a description of the problem and what I have done to try to fix it.
This bike features has a self diagnostic feature for the fuel sender circuit. When something is wrong with the fuel sender circuit, the tachometer displays an RPM pattern indicating that there is a problem- and this is what my bike is doing. The low fuel light bulb definitely works, as it flashes when I hit the starter button. I am assuming that the wiring downstream of the fuel sender is also OK, because when I hook up a variable resistor to the fuel sender harness, I can get the fuel light to turn on by keeping the resistance below 1800 (or 18??) ohms. When there is no fuel in the tank, the low fuel light does not go on. So I replaced the fuel sender, but the problem is still there. I also replaced the fuel filter (on the recommendation of a local mechanic), but this also did not fix the problem. I also do not think that there could be anything wrong with the fuel pump, because the bike runs just fine, there is no fuel starvation problems whatsoever. That said, I think the problem may lie with the ignitor unit (I really hope not though…) or the starter circuit relay.
