My initial thoughts are, make it into a motard. It's so ready since it has nothing else for dirt really.
What do you guys think about this for $1400. It seems a bit overpriced, since it needs so much. But, it certainly has possibilites I think?
Obviously you'd go with Excel rims/hubs and maybe some M-1 tires. That's about $1000. Then you'd need a full set of plastic, which is like $500? Subframe, bars, etc..
How much do you think it'd cost to make a usable motard for track duty? Total about $3500?
What do you guys think?

I swear to gosh i've seen this thread 25 times already. Let's get it straight on this one (and I'm not a dirt guy)
The XR400 is a great starter bike but probably not the best motard platform.
For motard you want CRF450 or XR650R.
The wheels and rims supposedly cost 1000$ but you will also need a big brake kit and other goodies.
My uneducated post whore opinion states that an XR400 can be had for no less than 3k. Which means you would need approx 5000$ to make a motard right.
Then again I know nothing.

Damn, are you mad or what bro? hahaha...
I'll let some of the vets chime in here, because you're obviously pissed that you don't have a 600RR or a dirtbike.. :/

Also, this xr400 looks MORE than capable of being a kick ass motard..

Dude ducky if we end up with BOTH our bikes matching I'm gonna strangle you!!!!
dude stay away from the crf unless its a dirt/track bike.. you wont be able to get a license plate for it. without a plate what fun is it? motards need to be on the street!
get the xr400 or the xr650r. you should pm hooliganrider or ask him. i rode his xr400 and it was awesome -but- after throwing down 3k for an xr400 you might as well save up a lttle more $ and just get the xr650r. more torque.
of course if its strictly for the track then hands down get the crf!

I was thinking strictly for the track, but the CRF is just TOO expensive. I can't find one for $3k..
The XR400 can be fully decked out for around $4500 if you get one at a reasonable price.

Save alittle longer and get the CRF...the xr is not competive. Too heavy and not enough power. You'll kick yourself for dropping 4500 bucks on a bike that will get you mid pack finishes at best.

The CRF will kill a first-time dirtbiker, no?

The only problem with these MX bikes is that the powerband hits pretty hard. Not the best bikes to learn on and also you get tired a lot faster. Either get a bike with smoother power delivery, or get a MX bike and put a heavier flywheel and taller gearing to tame the beast a little.
