A while back I was told by my Allstate agent that they no longer gave discounts based on age in CA because they considered that to be age discrimination. Has this change or was it never true? I see a lot of people talking about the age discount.

That would be cool, because then I could bitch to 21i for refusing to insure me when I was under 19.. doesn't that count as age discrimination too?

My understanding is that though they are not allowed to discriminate based on age, but can discriminate based on the number of years you have had your licence. Of course, they are both the same thing..

eh? I'm pretty sure a 17 yr old has to pay more insurance than a 26 yrd old that's been driving for 10 yrs.
The discount isn't age discrimination IMO. The 9 years of driving experience has no age requirement. No one under 25 can get it of course, but that's only because you can't get a license until you're 16 (used to be like that). A 40 yr old who just got their license won't get the discount.

edit: the married and own a home thing can be seen as indirect age discrimination

I believe they still do discriminate based on age. There might be some other thing thye classify it under. But if you are a male and under the age of 25, and are NOT married or do NOT have any kids...get ready to bend over

It's now based on how long you've been licensed. As appy said, it's "almost" the same thing. But not necessarily. For ex., you could have someone who immigrated at age 30 in the 80's and has been licensed for 23 years. But usually, length of being license is indicative of age.

It nowhere near the same thing. I got my M1 cert when I was 26. When it comes to MC insurance Progressive rates on how long you've had your M1 certification. Which is quite a bit different from how old your are. I personnely think its a good thing. It's not perfect and sometimes its flat wrong but in the magority of cases reflects how much saddle time you've got. Yeah I dig it. I've been riding for ten years. they view me a skilled rider....wow I get a break.

I know State Farm does it on how long you have been licensed, not specific to an M1 license either.

i love my insurance its awesome. im 17 with an F2/929 and my full coverage is ............. drum roll........................ $28.77 a month.
its awesome

I figured it was length of license, don't know why everyone gets excited when they turn 25 unless 9 yrs of car license does something for you.

Wanna know the sekret?

Step 1. - Get 2 bikes. 1 beater bike that can sit on the side of your house and rot if you want, and 1 New Hotness of your choice.

Step 2. - List beater bike as PRIMARY vehicle with liability only. List New Hotness as SECONDARY bike with full coverage.

Step 3. - Save a lot of money.

I did this with the GS500 as my primary, the kawi as secondary, and I save like $300 or $400 overall compared to having JUST the kawi listed full coverage as the primary.

I pay $600/yr for both my GS500 (liability only) and the 6RR (full coverage).

listing it as recreational use (<~7500 miles/yr) also helps, right?

IIRC, State Farm gives a discount at 9 years of driving experience.

I guess that would make sense, going along with being 25 yrs old even though they can't age discriminate. Last time I called state farm for a quote they laughed at me. I think I might have a clean enough record now though.

it's usually done by years you've had your license...cage that is not M1. the discounts for guys usually start after 5 or 6 years. 9-13 years gets another discount. after 13 years is the last discount. However, girls usually get the equivalent of the 13 year discount after 7 or 8 years. this is all according to state farm.

Port: I'd be surprised if you get insurance through all state as a new customer cause they told my friend they no longer do bike insurance for new customers. they only do it for existing bike customers. not sure though.

Hypothetically, an 18-yo licensed rider could have just as many--if not more--years licensed/driving experience than a 40-yo...;)

Edit--nevermind; someone else brought up this same point...

For both bikes?:wow Something's not right here...I'm 37, with clearly more M1/C-licensed years than you have (you obviously have less than two years licensed experience, unless your age was a typo), with a GSX-R750, and I'm paying $269/6 months for just liability/comp.

Does anybody here agree with me that there's something in this guy's story that's not being revealed here? Or was the insurance agent/broker on crack when he/she ran the numbers? Don't get me wrong--if indeed what you say is indeed correct...you gotta give me the name/number of your insurance company!:cool

his liability is probably minimum or close to min. Liability makes up the majority of my premium (liability + uninsured motorists + comp),

toneman i did make a mistake its only for the F2 and yea its only 28 bucks a month

When I moved to the US I'd been driving for 10 years (in, what, 20 countries, licensed in 4). However, the insurance agents insisted that I'd only been licensed for a week (since I'd received my CA license) and the premiums reflected that.

By shopping around a little I found an agent that took my overseas driving experience into account.

But, most certainly didn't give a toss about my age or overseas history. They just wanted to know how long I'd had a CA license.
