In Utah on the ole GS850. Note the saddlebags- these I borrowed from my little sister who rides horses- they are actual horse saddlebags that strap to the saddle while riding your horsey. Headin' cross country on the cheap!
Also note the zip-loc bag (no lie) that is scotch taped to the tank each morning with that map inside. I used photo copies of pages from a Gousha USA Road Atlas since I didn't know where I was going when I left (sort of picked a direction each morning). Worked pretty good actually! :laughing

yep, I read the problems the ST13s are having....handling woe's, overheating, charging problems, and one guy who's gas cap wouldn't open up....
At least Honda finally made a bike with personality for a change......:laughing
But I still like the ST1300 but by the time I can afford one, Im sure Honda will figure out how to get that problematic gas cap to open...the other stuff, Honda will address the old problems by giving newer ones....:p

Did you guys see the innovative "Tie-down" straps that they were selling at the m/c show? They seemed really cool, because you could REALLY cinch them down tight, and I always worry that I'm going to reach back behind me and my pack will be gone...

Amazingly, all it takes is two tie downs compressing in either direction (you can see them if you look closely, they're blue). That rig holds everything needed to survive both on the bike and off for months!

Natalie loves her Stadler Limit. And I am not just saying cause of our association, but for over 5 years we wore Motoport jacket (I am wearing one) and we knew that in the event of a spill we'd be in big trouble. :wow We figure the cost for the jacket will decrease the amount of injuries that we may acquire. At the Expo show the Limit jackets were $350! That was a deal, but I have my "bling" TransAir jacket for tour riding so no matching Limit jacket for me.

Beartooth Pass is just a few miles east of Yellowstone National Park on hwy 212 heading toward Billings Montana. There is some incredible scenery out there for sure. I really like Utah between St. George and Moab there’s several national parks to visit. The rock formations and colors are incredible. This tour lasted 14 days and covered 5,413 miles. I managed to do it on one set of Bridgstone 010's. In 2001 I managed to get 6,118 miles out of a set of 010's on a similar tour. When touring tires last me twice as long as they do hiting the canyons around home.

Cool thread. Neat pictures and some funny comments.
Here is a picture of the mighty RC51 sports touring machine at Redrock Canyon on 395 near Mojave. With its hard mounted rearset pegs, clipon bars, thinly padded seat and thumping motor the RC51 delivers the full riding experience on long road trips.
I want to hit the road again. Where is my electric vest now that I need it?

Thanks for the kind comments Tim :)
Yeah, I had it made down in Hollister the Summer before last. As I had written somewhere else, there really isn't any substitute for having Corbin make a seat "custom" for you if one has the opportunity to make it to one of their factory showrooms. And in my case, it was the only option, as they don't "officially" make a seat for the 2002+ V11 Sport varieties(i.e. Le Mans, Scura, Naked, etc). But if they can get a donor bike, hopefully that will be addressed one day.
Unfortunately, I've heard various degrees of varying customer satisfaction when ordering the "generic" fit Corbin for one's bike mail-order. But having it make on-site seems to be an almost guaranteed success.
I can't recall exactly what I paid for the seat, but it wasn't anymore than the standard pricing. In fact, if I recall, I actually got a small discount because they put a tiny scratch on the tank under the seat.
All in all, it was about $275 or something like that I think.
But yeah, the bike has evolved quite a bit in the last year:
- Heated Grips(currently Hot-Grips, but changing to Dual-Stars)
- Powerlet outlet in fairing
- Formotion clock/thermometer
- Mike Rich "Stage II" ported heads (www.cookedgooose.org)
- TiN Valves and new guides(Stock MG V11 valves have a known wear issue)
- Dual-plugs
- Jet-Hot coated exhausts(should reduce heat around legs a bit)
- PC-IIIusb
- Leo Vince exhaust
- Stucchi crossover
- Ohlins front forks
- Wake your neighbors FIAM horns :teeth
- various cosmetic thing-a-ma-jigs that don't really matter to anyone but myself :P
Coming this Winter:
The engine is coming apart for a warranty replacement of the cases due to the factory "crinkle coat" failing prematurely on 2002 bikes. While we are "in there" I thought I get some other work done... why not :cool
- Higher pressure fuel-pressure regulator(3.5bar, instead of 3bar OEM since I've opened up the intake and exhausts)
- High-comp pistons(different shape to retard detonation issues with OEM)
- Carillo conn-rods(much lighter)
- Ti push-rods(yeah, you heard it right PUSHRODS, remember this bike is "old tech" :laughing )
- New cam and corresponding valve springs
- And the crank/rotating-bits will need to be rebalanced.
Other than the parts' costs, after talking it over with my dealer, most of this should be "free" as almost all of these parts are coming apart/out anyway under warranty with the engine case swap. So I thought this might be the best opportunity.
I'm also getting an Ohlins rear shock, with the remotely adjustable preload.
Then get me some Hepco bags, and I should be "set" for a long time for any other mods, etc.
If I can get 90-ish HP at the rear wheel, I'll be satisfied. I have around 84-86 now(depending on the phase of the moon :laughing ) and around 64ft/lbs of pretty flat torque delivery.
...when I'm finished, I'm hoping to have the equivalent HP as just two of your cylinders! :laughing
al
P.S.
You may notice that the front rim is polished around the edge, while the rear is not. Well, that is a result of my ham-fisted removal of the front wheel and brakes... and knackering up the finish on the rim :wow So, I thought, "...hey, I always dug the polished rim edges on a Speed Triple I saw one time way back." :p So I just stripped off the paint along the damaged edges, and it looks pretty good... and it's easy as pie too. So since I need to pull the rear wheel in a week or so to check some lubrication issues, I'll probably strip it's edge to match. Hey, why not? :laughing

Deadliest road per miles travelled in the US. High altitude twisties (a bit of gravel every now and then), some nice sweepers, no cops, nothing, goes from nowhere to nowhere - surrearl plateau at the top. As good it gets.
- Monument valley: the road is boring - unless you go warp - but the scenery is gorgeous.

ah, the VFR. Nope, I don't have it any more. I bought it as my second bike, and quickly realized it was prolly one of the more stupid decisions I had made in a long time. (trying to graduate from a Virago 535 to a VFR with my skillset was impossible). But I did love the bike, she was waaaaay too big and heavy for me tho. So I sold her, courtesy of Donoman finding me a lead :thumbup
but still, I just wanted to join in a thread cos I am feeling left out at the moment :cry

Because when I sold my ZX-11, I wasn't smart enough to know I had to go to the DMV and pay some $$ to reserve/hold the plate. There was a gap in between the two bikes in buying this one and when I went to get new plates, that plate was now taken. :cry Pretty stupid on my part, but it never even occured to me I need to do something like that. So if you see some schmuck with my plate, tell em I said Hi. :twofinger This plate came with the bike. It works, and the 'pashnit' moniker has become so well known in motorcycling circles, that it's taken on a life of its own!

The suspension was sent over to Lindemann for new springs and oil and stuff, and the Ohlins shock I bought almost a year ago was finally installed. They tuned it all up, and now it runs and handles like it did 50,000 miles ago!
I was checking out that Givi luggage, too. Right now, I use a groovy tail sack that attaches to the Suzuki luggage points, but after a good ride in the rain, (like today and yesterday) the bag catches all kinds of crap that gets flicked up from the rear tire. I'm betting that hard luggage would keep my stuff clean, inside, without having to seperately waterproof-pack everything. Easy!

Sounds like you've got a killer TL there. The diablos are great! Ohlins Rocks! Who cares 50k miles? Get a new speedo!! J/K ;)
Hard bags are nice. Givi has some pretty cool set ups. The neat thing about their system is, you can take the hard bags off and carry them like luggage! If it takes you longer than 5 seconds to get them off it's because you have no thumbs - in which case it might take 6 seconds!
Hard bags with bag liners is a nice way to go, that way, once you get to wherever - you just pull the liner and Voila! You're on your way. Plus it's another buffer in case water gets in the case.
Anyhow, great bike! Enjoy :cool

Ok, If I must be serious.....harring, just checked out the link to the ride. Looks interesting! I am going on a Grand Canyon trip on the 24th-27th and then straight back to a BMW Rally on the 28th-31st. Maybe I should just make it a marathon bike week and go to the West Coast thing too!! Haven't ploughed thru all of the pages yet but...
I just put 2800 miles on this one. Picked it up in Nth Carolina and rode it back to Long Beach for shipping to my brother in Ireland. Kinda fun ride but I'd definitely be looking for a new seat. The stock one sucks big time. Otherwise, cool tourer, fast, great mpg, cool detachable bags, adjustable windshield is really good option, only needs a sound system to be really good for the long trips...

She decided that instant, and ordered it right on the spot (different colors then the one on the showroom floor).

Apologies. I should keep my trap shut.
At least you're putting a foot forward!
Before going for dinner - try a safe common interest thing - like an invite to a local group ride... People tend to be lest gaurded/nervous when they can get to know somebody in a neutral - non presure - group activity.

I've heard of conversion kits, where a ski gets mounted under the front tire and the rear tire is replaced with a paddle-tire, and outriggers go on the crash-points. Ever tried that?? :laughing

Well, I guess it's time to step up and propose an Social Gathering at San Ramon Hop Yard Brewpub. XS proposes Thursday. I second.
So moved. Passed unanimously. March 4th, 7 PM-ish?
I'll start an SG thread for it. Lucky me. Dan, ya wanna do your Mod thingy? Whatever it is??

If it was at least a guest room it'd be worth taking up drinking for!

Wait a minute!
This is supposed to be an ST forum - intended for those of us who like to ride and look for just about any excuse to ride.
That said, why not plan a little meet and greet in San Luis Obispo? Now that's a good day's ride from the East Bay or SJC. It'd be a little over a 300 mile day.
Of course, if this is the wrong forum and I've accidentally tripped into the 'I never ride my bike further than Starbucks' forum then I doooo apologize.
Let's re-run that vote shall we?

Oh contraire! I ride up that way all too frequently.
Like I said before, if there are 5 or 10 of you ST riders up in the bay longing for an excellent excuse to ride then what better than some good food after an excellent ride to San Luis??
There's Morro Bay - HWY 1 (North or South) tons of great roads to get here (25, 198, G14, etc etc etc).
So.... your bluff - she's been called! :wtf

Work is such an annoying distraction! I finally had to finish my Friday "action items" late this afternoon, and I missed out on all the smut! :(
Tomorrow looks like a beautiful morning - anyone want to meet at Baskin Robbins on Redwood Road, and cruise back into and all over the hills?
I gotta be at the Castro Valley shooting range at 11:30 for a high-power rifle competition, so I'm looking for an early ride.
However, if I'm up all night reading XS's posts, I'll have sweet dreams indeed!

At least you're putting a foot forward!
Before going for dinner - try a safe common interest thing - like an invite to a local group ride... People tend to be lest gaurded/nervous when they can get to know somebody in a neutral - non presure - group activity.
Then Dinner :laughing
I wasn't always married ! :cool
Best of luck - and don't let anybody discourage the effort!

lfr is dying for the chance at meeting you as are a few other fellas in here - obviously.
Someone was giving me grief about the notion of doing a ride to SLO so... let's pick a mid-point.
I'd say Monterey but that's not fair to you guys since I get beautiful HWY 1 both ways. So, let's pick a spot and see if we can get a few people interested and meet there tomorrow - SUNDAY FEBRUARY 29th, 2004 - for an early afternoon lunch/coffee. I'm thinking 1:00ish so we don't have to leave to early and so that we have adequate time to get back.
If not Monterey or Big Sur, consider Coalinga or King City because that will give you guys HWY 25 & 198 which should be taken at every opportunity.
Now about those pictures..... There are other uses they could be put to as well! :laughing

Fair enough. I will say this though, if we are going to get a few more riders, you will have to confirm sooner than tonight!
I think we can all generally agree that this crowd will not be riding down to wherever to meet yours truly for lunch and coffee!!
Have a good day,

Geez, feel like I am on an episode of 'Elimidate'!!:laughing Ok, I find it hard to believe that the ST guys don't want to just get out there and ride no matter what. I'm gonna go with the other group tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting some new friends at the meet in San Ramon on Thursday. I'm up for a ride next Sunday if anyone is intersted?? Have a great Sunday everyone!

Well the absence of any riders looking for a ride down this way tomorrow suggests that I will be spinning HWY 58 tomorrow.
Oh well.... Life should be so difficult.
Have a good ride Exc and all others as well.
Perhaps we'll put something together this week for next weekend.

Hardly a 300 mile day! I did this yesterday, not even down to SLO though, farthest south I made it was Cambria.
It was a 500 + mile day, at least according to my trip meter.
I took 25 south (good), and 1 back north (GREAT!!). 198 was cool too, but short since I took it west, and I took some road called Santa Rosa Creek Road off of 46, that's a goat trail!
Lastly, here's the only picture from yesterdays ride, taken around Big Sur, yes I got a minor ticket, the officer was a cool guy though, he snapped the picture for me!

I calced the mileage by MapQuest - but, that's the shortest/fastest route and likely the least entertaining.
I'm thinking that Monterey sounds good to me. I used to live there and love to ride by and have chowder on the warf (not Cannery Row) occassionally.
Let's see if we can get a group together for next week - Saturday or Sunday.
I would prefer Saturday because then my missus can ride also. However, that said, I would make the sacrifice if it were Sunday and I had to ride up!
