Just a heads up. A friend of mine had his steering damper, an Ohlins, taken off of his bike this weekend. He had parked his bike in his apartment garage in Dublin, off of Haceinda Crossing, and when he came out it was gone. They didn't take the bracket, just the damper. He called the cops and they told them there is a rash of bike and bike accessories thefts in the area. What truly sucks is that he had just bought it a week ago only got to use it on one trackday. He says that, considering they could have either taken or ganked the whole bike, he aint to boiled up about it but he's lying.

Also curious, is there any way to secure a damper to the bike, making it at least inconvenient to take off?

I remove my damper if staying in an area where I can't monitor my bike. It only takes a few minutes to take it off.

on my scotts i bought a security bolt kit, where the bolts that attach the damper to the mounting kit come w/ a hex key that only you have. So only you can take them off.

I hear that those strip easily.

The problem with that is that if you or I can purchase the kit that comes with the key for so easily...what keeps the someone else from getting the key and stealing the damper too?

Unless the key is specific to each bolt similar to Wheel Locks then that woould be a different story.

Best method is to take it off, or get a damper mounting location that's not easily seen, similar to the mounting poitns of the GSXR.

Go to a fastner supply house and search for some security bolts. They have some really interesting designs there.

:shhh Yeah that seems to be the big secret with the Scotts. Depending on who installed it, you might be able to just grab hold and yank the whole damn thing off. :shhh But the "security" bolts will deter dumb criminals, and that's all you can ever really hope for anyway.

Sorry to hear about the theft :( Having anything stolen, no matter how small, always leaves one with a sense of being violated, and is not only maddening, but very frustrating.

But I have to say, it's very odd for someone to have just stolen a damper and nothing else off of the bike, or the whole bike itself. Wierd. It must have been a "crime of opportunity" or someone was "shopping" for that part.

The Scotts Damper by itself sells for $225 + on ebay from last i checked. So stealing just the damper is pretty profitable for that person.

Since there is so much space on the Scotts surface, just etch your name on it so that the person will think twice before stilling. No one would want to buy something with someone else's name right there on the front. Cheap security.

Not a bad idea, similar to spray painting your own car cover or something. The only problem with that is it devalues yoru damper in case you want to sell it, and it makes it look less bling bling...

Yup. Like I said, take it off. It only takes a few minutes.

Amazing how there are folks out there willing to snag anything on a sport bike. Just imagine if there were folks out there just willing to steal fairings/plastics.....I'm definitely not going to take the time to remove / install my plastics everytime I get on/off the bike. :p :p

I don't know how you could possibly protect every part of your bike if it sits outside without an armed guard...

If someone breaks into my garage, I'm gonna pop some 9mm's into their sorry azzez! Beware of this madman with his SigSauer9!!!!!!!!!!

Suck azz thieving bastids!!!!

This is problably the easiest way to stop any theif that is looking for an easy opportunity to just take it. Just get a couple of tamper proof bolts and you'll better your odds of getting it stolen.

You could slow a thief down considerably by filling in the heads of your allen bolts with JB Weld or something similar. It will make it a pain in the ass for you to remove since you'll have to chip the stuff out, but it will probably make the crook look for an easier target.
