I find that good music tends to come in bursts. Now that they boy-band girl-band trend seems to almost be dead I'm noticing a lot better music on the airwaves.
The last GOOD burst was grunge, no question... Nirvana, Pearl Jam, SoundGarden, STP, etc... all excellent. I don't think the 80's really saw much in the way of talent in the popular music arena, other than the great bands of the 70's that were still going full-tilt... Rush, Floyd, etc.
Now we've got a post-grunge "nu-metal" scene hapening that I'm pretty impressed with, and hip-hop is actually not to bad. I forget the term for it but the blend of rock and hip-hop has been pretty successful... Limp Bizkit comes to mind, Rage Against the Machine, and others that aren't leaping from my memory.

I never really could get into the grunge scene for some reason. I listened to metal all through high school, and was into the 80' stuff before that. My staple music know is trance, techno club stuff.
Talk about going from 1 extreme to the other.:D

"I love my niggaz but where's ma bitches" -DMX. haha.
well don't really listen to rap and I kinda hate R&B cause they're all doing that aahhuuughhaaaghhhhaaa thing all the time and it's tiresome, or any of the top 40 stations but i kinda like some of the semi-new music on the radio now. It takes a few listens for me to get into the music though.
RATM was awesome. too bad they broke up.

Yes, too bad about Rage, but they ARE releasing a new album w/ Chris Cornell (from SoundGarden) singing for them. Should be interesting!

I'd be interested in how much their sound would change w/ Cornell as the frontman. Definitely won't be the same hip hop influence the other dude had (damn name is drawing a blank at 4:30am for some reason :rolleyes).

Hey, Barry White does that all the time too, but Barry White is the man!

Guns N Roses? Metallica? That was some talent...not to mention my favorite but not well known punk band of all time, Operation Ivy. The 80's did give us more than big hair and too short shorts on guys you know...:)

Ahhh - but they weren't "popular" at the time - they were still underground bands. As soon as the 90's rolled around Metallica began their downhill descent, and it was shortly after that G 'n' R did the same.
I'm still not sure which of them suffered the worst fate. Metallica's still around but they suck. Guns is gone forever but they never released a bad album.

The last part is very true. I agree 100%.
