Heavy Toll For Northern California In Iraq

POSTED: 9:07 am PST March 23, 2004

WASHINGTON -- Three soldiers from Northern California -- including Lance Cpl. Andrew S. Dang of Foster City -- have died as a result of wounds or injuries received in Iraq.

The U.S. Defense Department reported Tuesday that Dang, 20, was killed by hostile fire near Ar Ramady, Iraq. He was assigned to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Meanwhile, military authorities said that Army surgeon Mark Taylor was killed Saturday in a rocket attack outside his barracks in Fallujah during the weekend. Taylor, 41, of Stockton, Calif., was assigned to the 782nd Main Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg, N.C.

The U.S. Army also announced on Tuesday that a National Guardsman from Sacramento died over the weekend of injuries suffered in a HumVee accident.

First Lt. Michael W. Vega, 41, of Lathrop, Calif., died from the injuries sustained when his military vehicle rolled over in Diwaniyah, Iraq, on March 11. Vega was assigned to the 223rd Military Intelligence Company, 223rd Military Intelligence Battalion, Army National Guard, based in Sacramento, Calif.

he IS such a brilliant kid.... Both marines stationed at Camp Pendleton, both named Andrew and the soldier was from Foster City. And his b-day is Jan 31, 1984. So he'd be 20.

smallnfast, I 100% agree with you. This just makes me hate this war more and more. I hope one day the general public will realize that war is not a good thing, and it should be used only as a last resort. I get so pissed when innocent kids die for the wrong reasons. :(

Thanks to you two for politicizing his unfortunate death. He joined of his own free will, knowing the possibilities. He fought to get into the service of his country, hoping that if he had to make the ultimate sacrifice that it would not be in vain.

I'm proud of him. I'm proud of his family and those who support him. I'm not so proud of those who denigrate what he fought for, i.e. the struggle to bring freedom to those less free. I do end up wondering what people like frOng and small&fast WOULD fight for, if/when the chips were down. Anything? Or would they depend on others to fight and perhaps die for their benefit?

God Bless. To him and his fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines (and Coasties, wherever you are). And his family.

It's amazing how something like this instills a little perspective in your life. I heard the news reports today and thought to myself how sad that we lost more troops. On the other hand, and this is horrible, I think we all have probably become a bit numb to hearing about soldiers losing their lives overseas. We hear about it so frequently. It's a horrible thing and I completely recognize it, but I'm willing to bet the same holds true (at some level) for all of us.

I didn't know you, Andrew, but thank you for what you selflessly did for our country. Thank you for the fond memories that people are expressing about you based on the person you chose to be. Above all, thank you for bringing things back into perspective for me; for reminding me that every soldier's name that comes across the wire from the Associated Press has friends and family that are suffering over their loss; that they aren't just names, but that they are people.

:rose RIP Andrew.

I think Steve makes a good point, but also I think you're overlooking the fact that a lot of us DO have personal ties to what's going on over there, and its in the form of friends/family/people we know who are over there. It breaks my heart to read the emails I get from my friend Tim who was in Iraq and to hear of what they had to go through.

So far I've had 2 of my 3 deployed friends return, and one is supposed to be back soon. Now I consider it 2 of 4.

My heart goes out to Andrews family, and I hope they know that their loss is all of ours, and that it was NOT in vain.

As you can see, andrew had some rather stong points regarding the war. for all of you saying the war is pointless, you can eat a *#%& . andrew believed what he was doing, and im glad he died doing something he loved. if you want details, he was 60 miles southwest of baghdad on patrol in a humvee. he was on top pf the humvee, in the gunners seat, when they came around a corner and were ambushed by rpgs (rocket propelled grenades) and small arms fire. andrew was hit by shrapnell from the rpg and killed instantly. I went to school with andrew, and we both rode allot. i cant remember how many times he would come over with bent bars and levers and have me pound them out. andrew was one of my best friends, and it is so hard to know that he isnt coming back. im sure his family appriciates all the kind words you have for him, wether or not you knew him. i will talk to his mom some more and see what i can do about having barf show up at the services. i got a little something yesterday you guys might want to check out:

His brother rides, and while at boot andrew told me to take him for rides every once and awhile. his brother and him were close, both had ninja 250s they bought at the same time. im sure his bro would really like it if we had a big group riding around, take a few pictures for his mom, him, along with me and the rest of his friends.

Politics of the war aside here.....

Andrew-
You died protecting the very freedoms that I want my kids to have. I wanted to join the armed forces out of HS, but baseball took me down a different path. Since 9/11 the urge to join has again been tugging at me, and what you have sacraficed for us has given me a deep sadness for the loss of you, but even more so... I'M PROUD to be an AMERICAN. I'm proud to say I'm from the same place that you and your fellow soldiers are fighting to protect.

Thank you for everything. Thank you for being the man that a lot of us didn't have the courage to be. Thank you for protecting me, and my future kids.

"I will always do my duty, no matter what the price..I've counted up the costs...I know the sacrafice,..I don't want to die for you, but if dyings asking me...I'll bear that cross with honor, cause freedom don't come free..."

How about the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum? If they receive $500 collectively, they will put up a plaque on their wall in Andrew's memory. This is sponsored by the AMA and the money goes for motorcycle safety education and laws.......very worthy cause. Just a thought.

If this is what everyone decides, all the contact info is noted on their website. We'll have to decide what we want written on the plaque. Even if it's under $500, the contribution will be noted on their website in the "Gifts In Memory" Section, if Andrew's family wants to view it.

yeah, when andrew graduated i was the only one out of his friends able to make it, i rode my ghetto ninja down there, watched the graduation, ate some lunch with him and rode back. on the way back though, my fuel petcock was leaking like crazy and he helped me ghetto rig it with superglue, and the paper backing off of the super glue container. now THATS how you get things done.

I know this is a late post and all but I feel I need to voice my thoughts. Andrew ran into me about 3 weeks ago when he first arrived in Kuwait. I'm currently in Iraq so regretfully my post is delayed. I graduated from Aragon, class of '01 and had a couple of elective classes with him. To let all of you know, Andrew seemed pretty happy and excited when we saw each other. He was happy to know that someone else he knew was out there with him. I was the last person to see him alive that knew him from home and he definitely wasn't any different from what he was like in high school. For all who feel sorry for him or his family just know this, he died as proud as I believe he could have and he had no regrets. RIP young brotha, I will never forget the smile on your face!

This is one brave soul! This last post here of Andrew copied by Scorpio is just breath taking to me. I don't know. All I can say is what a brave soul.

I just got back from Illinois. My lil brother graduated from the Naval boot camp. I see Andrew's courage in my brother. My brother was lost for a while, and now that I've talked to him this past weekend, it just seems unreal! He's a brave man. I'm so proud of him! Keep my brother in your thoughts, pray for him, and know he's there for not only our cause, but for his. I don't agree too much with this gov ways, but I can say that I do support the men and women of the armed forces for their bravery!

Rest in peace, Andrew and my condolences to his family.

Some people put their lives on the line every day to protect everyone's freedom. The military (soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, coast guard, police, firemen, etc.) risk their lives and their families peace so that we can go about our daily lives in relative comfort.

I respect his sacrifice. I'd rather not have any of our public servants lose their lives. But having been in the military, I know that there will be more lives lost keeping this nation's freedom.

Freedom is never free. Those who think it is, have never served and, in many if not most occasions, look down on those that have. I pity those people.

To quote Nathan Hale, "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country."
