So, I'm in a state of temporary bachelorhood while my wife and kid are off visiting family in the Midwest. Opportunist that I am, I've been trying to get my riding fix as much and as often as I can in the meantime. My dance card for the next month had been booked up solid, but in a fortuitous turn of events, my schedule changed and I've got the weekend of July 31st & August 1st all to my greedy little self. Of course, I can think of no better way to spend it than to go on a two-day ride.

This is what I propose: we get a group of sport tourers together and do a two-day ride to and through any number of the myriad sites of beauty and wonder that our fair state has to offer. We leave on Saturday morning, spend a night somwhere along the way on Saturday night, either camping or hoteling it, and then wend our way back to the Bay Area on Sunday.

I have nothing concrete in mind, only that I want to ride that weekend, so I'm open to suggestions regarding routes, destinations, distance and accomodations. Anybody else game? Any ideas? Bueller? Bueller?

If I didn't already have Willow Springs on the schedule, I'd definitely be in! Our last "Sport Touring" ride was a classic! ;)

sorry Deeter

I am off to the track, otherwise I woulda loved to have joined ya

have fun :thumbup

Darn, I have plans that weekend. If you are at all interested in the FJR, head up to Moscow, ID for the WFO-3. Western FJR Owners rally.
Something on the order of 190 people have signed up. :wow
Open to owners and prospective owners of the FJR

Okay kids, I've been playing around with suggestions and my mapping software and here's what I've come up with. This is by no means cut in stone, so speak up and let me know your thoughts! :thumbup

Route Proposal 01:

Total Distance - 926.05 mi
Depart - Saturday Monrning
Return - Sunday Evening
Stopover - Red Bluff @ Sat. night
Distance to stopover - ~500 mi

Saturday:

Meet at Marin GG Bridge Vista Point
Follow Hwy 1 N to Stewart's Point/Skagg's Springs Rd (cuz ya just gotta!)
Stewart's Point/Skagg's Springs Rd E to Hwy 128 @ Geyserville
Hwy 128 NW back to Hwy 1
Hwy 1 N to Hwy 101 @ Leggett
Hwy 101 N to Rt 36 @ Rohnerville
Hwy 36 E to Red Bluff (referred to by Pashnit.com as "The Ultimate Ride")

~ 500 mi

- Spend Sat. night in Red Bluff -

Sunday:

Hwy 36 E to Hwy 395 @ Susanville
Hwy 395 SE to 70 W
70 W to 49 SE @ Vinton
49 SE to Int 80 @ Auburn
Int 80 back to Bay Area

~ 425 mi

This affords us a whole heaping mess of coastal riding on Saturday and then some nice mountain riding on Sunday. Hwy 49 is a real treat as it winds through the Tahoe Natn'l Forest. I did that ride just over a month ago and I already want to go back. The heat isn't bad at all through the moutains. Thw worst possible heat will be around the 395 stretch, but we should be done with that stretch in the AM, so it should be no worries with regard to the heat -- also, around the Sacramento area should be hot too, but that is fleeting since the closer to the BA you get, the cooler the temps get.

The only unfortunate part of the route is the Interstate slog back from the Sacto area, but it's a quick and easy way to shave time off the route should we decide to bunk down before Red Bluff the night before.

So whaddya think, gang, still got the True Grit for this one? :D

:wow now that's a f****loop ride!!hey, are you going to the meet tonite?if so,would like talk a little more about this trip.....

Jimmy, I'll be there tonight, so we can talk more then. :thumbup

John, you consider yourself "looped". ;)

Nedro, tempting though it may be to put those 900+ miles on my buddy's KLR, I'll most likely be doing it on my R1.

I could very well be down for this, just no camping.

Norcal or Lowcal?

Dan, you're only invited if you promise to bring a spare tire and your own air compressor! :twofinger

:laughing dont forget plugs too. :laughing

Bummer I will miss out on that loop, looks like a good one

My buddy and I did the left side of your proposed ride last weekend, total of about 750 miles in two days. 36 was awesome!!! Watch out for deer though. Skaggs was kind of a let-down after that.

Spare tire's a bit hard to come up with, unless I bring the Diablo that got nailed @ 75 miles.

But I got all the CO2 cartridges and plugs you'd need to inflate six bikes, biyatch! :twofinger

Say, why not take that first day and try and stretch it out for an official Saddlesore?

Deeter- your loop looks great. My only suggestions is forget that Susanville - Hwy 395 leg. No reason to go into no mans land. The stretch from Lake Almanor to Susanville is pretty boring, then Hwy 395 is textbook super-slab. Beyond boring. South of Susanville, it's high desert, and the only thing out there is the prison.

Look on your map at Lake Almanor, and note that little squiggly line next to it headed south. That's Highway 89. Do that instead, that ride is fantastic, and you'll make good time.

Also note on your map, those squiggly little lines one after the other south of Lake Almanor. Those four rides are part of that Holy Grail of Motorcycling in those parts. Hwy 32, Hwy 70 (boring but scenic), Oroville-Quincy Hwy (fantastic), La Porte Rd (amazing) are the passes to the north of Hwy 49.

Tips from the master -- Domo arigato, sensei! Thanks for the tips, I've amended the route to reflect your suggestions. You're right, 395 is a miserable berg, I don't know what I was thinking in routing through there other than wanting to make sure we hit all of Rt. 36. But I think there's enough of it to go around with the new route.

Any other nuggets of Sport Touring wisdom? :teeth

Since the new Day 2 route clips more time/miles off of Day 2, I'm going to include a suggestion from Rhagu from SBR that includes a mini loop through the Sierra's on Wentworth Springs Rd. The loop adds 120 miles, but since we lost 50, It's really only another additional 70 miles overall.

I figure Day 1 goes well and everyone is itching for more on Day 2, well hit Wentworth Springs. But if we experience a setback on Day 1 for whatever reason, or want to dawdle more on Day 2, we've got that there as a buffer, just in case. :thumbup
