I'm hoping to find some fellow lovers of singletrack to ride with. :teeth

I know we have quite a few people here who love to mountain bike and I'm hoping to gather a list of individuals who would be interested in meeting to ride every once in a while.

Post up here and let me know if you're interested!

<edit>

This thread has taken on a life of its own and I hope we can keep it going with your help.

Post up your ride stories, pics, tips, trail suggestions, gear reviews, etc.

I'm down and thanks for starting the thread. I can't make this Sunday due to other commitments but am interested for all future rides.

I admit I have to get my legs going again but this is just what I need to do that. Started riding in school about 92' while a CU-Boulder.

Please let me know about future rides.

I try to hit the trails 2-3 times a week. On the days I'm not on the dirt, I'm riding the roadbike, Sundays I'm lazy and ride the SV.
I'm up to join some Barf rides, but it'll have to wait for a week or so. I just had a nasty crash on my mountainbike Tuesday. Had a rock rip a nice gash down the palm of my hand, pretty nasty stuff, needs time to heal. After that I'll be interested in ripping it up with you guys.

It looks like it. I've been hiking the trails up on 35, and seeing all the bikers go by made me jealous. Got my fingers crossed on a nice looking GT on eBay right now.

So like... um... how do you turn on a bicycle? :blush
Like how much cornering grip do bike tires have? I don't want to be 2-wheel drifting when I hit my first corner. :(
Do you countersteer?? Do you enter corners like you do a sportbike? By dropping your shoulder into the turn and leaning off the bike?

As you approach a turn wieght the outside peg, lean and look through the turn....sound familiar. You might want to consider some of WW's newbie rides first.

I'm busy this weekend... but one of these days I would love to join a Mtn bike barf ride.

I'm familiar with a lot of the south bay areas.
Not so up on those to the north.

I too have been off the Mtn Bike for way too long.

I need the exercise that that fun ride provides.
Gotta quit procrastinating.

Just do it!

Yeap, but I mostly do Skyline and Nisene Marks...

There is a trail that is fabulous that drops from Skyline into Stevens Creek park, crosses the river a bunch of times before a heinous climb out :) Well worth it tho...

I have started beating on my Walmart full suspension mountian bike again. I take it with me out to sea, so when I pull into other ports I can kill time. I was terrorizing Seattle and San Diego with it a month or so ago.

I would like to try some trails at some point. I have only done urban assault type riding before.

Hey guys, I'm new here.

I'd be interested in some group mountainbiking, all my bkinig friends wussed out (got married, kids, whatever) or moved out of state.

WW put me on your list. I'd be down for some riding this weekend. I'm not sure if I can make it up to China Camp this Sunday though (I'm in south San Jose, it's like a 2h trip one-way). Otherwise we can meet another time (weekends only though).

Chances are it's 8 speed and elstomer springs in what looks like a rock shox quadra or very early judy.

Somewhere between state of the ark and state of the art!!

Fine to see if you like it enough to get back into it again.

Hmmm, I dunno, I don't like aluminum mountain bikes. Light (which is good) but stiff. And, as someone else said, unless you are over 6"1, that is a big bike. A bike being too big can be really annoying on descents. I am 6"1, and I have a 19 inch frame. If I had to do it again, I would get a smaller frame. But, my bike is too sweet to give up (Yeti titanium). It is *great* for climbing. I would think you could find something better..

Next Thursday? I can meet you there after work if you like, around 7 o'clock. I usually do a double loop over there.

It's the most fun legal singletrack in the East Bay. Still haven't done "Side-O" in the Berkeley Hills (which isn't legal).

For the southern peeps, check out Soquel Demonstration Forest (Aptos), Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz or Corte Madera (Hwy 35 by Alices, mosquito warning use protection ;)).

I tried putting a little web page together ages ago with links to various parks out there and it does still need tons of updating but since I've got it, feel free to check it out. There are links to maps and stuff for some of the parks out in the South Bay.

Oh Wolf- get an 18" frame if you wanna do any good mtn biking on it. 20+" frames aren't as nimble, even if you fit somewhat comfortably on it. Aluminum is stiff but is one of the best materials to toss around on either downhill or through singletrack. Steel (Chromoly) is good for the urban jungle or as a cheapy thrashing bike as you can bend parts back if you need to.

How about a rear shock upgrade with a lock out? best of both worlds :teeth

I couldn't pry my brother's Santa Cruz away from him!

I'm fat and old- the next bike I get will have that stupid term "free-ride" somewhere on it :laughing

bike has a rear lock out does not work that well, its set up for free ride so its a long travel front fork. dont want to dump any more money into it just ride it or get a hardtail . if i was to sell it there some sweet bikes i could get with the money. i put almost $3000 into that damm bike. its a few years old and i would be lucky to get $1000 for it.

way worse. on sportbikes i mostly break even. buy em cheap clean em up ride for a few months and sell it for what i put into them. mountain bikes i buy new, pay way too much for them and end up loosing 75%.

We had a great ride today!

I met up with Teapotter (Terrence), MrCrash (Mike), and Chainlash (Devin) today at China Camp. Terrence and Mike were much stronger climbers with Devin following closely behind and me "sweeping" ;) (I really just wanted to check out everyones ass! :teeth).

We decided to make the climb all the way to the top today after much coaxing from Teapotter and MrCrash. It was a pretty tough climb on the last leg (at least to some of us :)) but we eventually made it to the top.

The reward was the fun rolling downhill single track. Teapotter and MrCrash took a couple of more technical sections while Chainlash and I stuck to the less technical sections. I'm glad I had Devin there to ride with, otherwise those guys would have left me in the dust!

Great ride today...can't wait to do it again.

I had an awesome time; thanks for organizing it WW! It was nice to have a partner in crime in the "slow but steady" group while the "jack rabbit" group waited for us.

Although you did suddenly change into a speed demon on the descents. Very fast downhiller for sure. :thumbup

I think we're going to try to do Coyote Hills (http://mtb.live.com/rides/CoyoteHills.html) next week after work.

Anyone interested?

We are shooting for Wednesday evening (8/4) around 7PM.

Great trails for newer and rusty riders :) Nothing technical, just good exercise.

I'm still trying to figure out the best way of notifying everyone of rides. The PM route works, but tends to be a bit time consuming having to click on each individual person...

Would you guys object to giving me your email addys so I can send out the invites that way? I promise I won't spam you :angel

Let me know!

Weird, I just re-inflated the tires on my Hard Rock last week after like a year of no-riding. Then I see this thread. I dunno about group rides though since the 10-mile flat-land ride I did to and from Snellbucks last week just about did me in.

I'm not a strong climber either. I need more "slow and steady" people to keep me company when I ride with the likes of MrCrash and Teapotter!

Damn, I so could have made it. Instead I bummed around the house almost the whole day (spent 1.5 hours on the phone with family and felt completely drained of all energey afterwards). Peeled myself of the couch around 4pm and went riding the Fizzy. Took the long route up to Alice's.
Wasn't too bad, but completely anti-social. I think after the phonecall I didn't talk to any other person the whole day :(
Looks like I'll be missing the next ride as well.... It's very difficult for me to go during the week.

you should try riding the coyote bike path some time. It's flat and is about 15 or so miles round trip. The trick is to get started earlier in the day so you don't catch a head wind on the way back. Nothing like struggling to go downhill because of a strong wind :teeth

:mad :mad :mad I haven't had a flat tire on a bike since I started using those plastic tire liners in 1995 :laughing

They are like $5, and are a thin plastic that you put between the tire and the tube on the inside. It doesn't effect the tire at all since it is so thin, but thorns can't go in it.

Bill,
Check out Crossroads in Las Gatos. Their address is 2170 N. Santa Cruz Ave. Very good shop, high end bike, and the mechanic is a fellow rider.
The other good shop is Trailhead in the camden Plaza, right there at Camden and Union. Nothing but mountain bikes in that on, but a wider selection and price range.

Sinawik sent me to the hospital for stitches a couple of years back. Did you guys do Cinderella or Chaparral?

If you're speaking of the hill on the climb out - yeah, that hill is a bitch. Short, but tough. Especially tricky making it over that log. On my old bike (that was recently stolen), I was successful only about 30% of the time.

When's the next time you're planning on going?

I'd used to love mountain biking about 12 years ago. I just bought a bike last christmas and rode it maybe 4 or 5 times since. I would love to join but you guys gonna have to take it easy on me. Last time I hit the trail about 2 months ago. I live in Fairfield, if there is anyone here interested on starting again, we can hit Rockville park to start and work our way up. It's a little hill but a lot of single trails.

Ouch... that's a great way to ensure you'll hate mountain biking. Hmm... what's a good analogy.. pentium 4 computer is to quality MTB as 386 computer is to dept. store bike. sure, it'll roll around and will be easier than walking, but the quality will definitely not be there, you'll try to repair unrepairable components, and the store you bought it from won't be able to tell you the head tube from the chain stay.

Want cheap? Buy used. From a reputable bike shop if possible.

Holy Crap!!!! :wow :wow First time out mountain biking today, and I saw a freakin mountain lion!!!!!
Was going down a trail off Skyline (parking lot where that "City of Palo Alto" sign is, but on the Santa Cruz side, about 1 mile down that trail).

Came around a corner, and about 50ft ahead of me, I see this large tan cat jump off the trail and into the brush. :wow
Was probably about 3.5-4ft long, and only saw it for a second. But it was enough to start me pedaling the other way pretty quick. :blush

HAHAHA same thing happened to me in Palo Alto. Shits kind of creppy huh?

How big was the lion you saw... usually if they're small they're not much danger to you. probably more afraid of you. but if you ever see one this big... get ready to fight.

I'd say let's meet around 6 (traffic will be a bitch, so I might be a little late). I've never been to Coyote Hills. I work near Great America Park in Santa Clara so I think both, it and Stevens Canyon will take me about 30 minutes to get to. Which one would work for you?

Yes, Braille is in Soquel, which is in the Santa Cruz mountains off of 17. That would be quite a drive for you, but I think you would find the drive well worth it (if you love doing downhill).

The climb in is about 5 miles and the climb out is about 2.5 with about 5 miles of downhill in between.

There are log jumps and teetertotters all along the trail. SO MUCH FUN!!

Hey Terence,

Soquel is the bomb! I'd rate the climb somewhere between China Camp and Skeggs, while the downhill and singletrack is some of the best around.

I know China Camp was a little on the basic side for you - you should hit the singletrack on the backside of the hill with me sometime! The climb out is a lot more work, with rolling singletrack that's about 1/2 to 1/3 as narrow as what's on the front side.

Lemme know,

Mike

Rockville Park in Rockville CA is one of the best single trail for me. From biginner to very technical trail. Although I haven't really been anywhere else, so what do I know.:teeth

Yeah, I rode Skaggs about a week ago. Anything lower? Like valley floor stuff? Anything good near big basin/236?

The "mostly level" bit rules out Skeggs. Lots of climbing.

The front side of China Camp starts with a gradual two-mile climb, that leads to several miles of rolling singletrack. In fact, about 90% of the ride is on singletrack. It's probably your best bet, and is my regular ride when I'm limited on time.

I did the Tamarancho trail out near Fairfax once. Nice rolling singletrack, but the location is nowhere near as accessible as China Camp. It's a bit of a climb to get in there as well.

I hear Wilder Ranch down near Santa Cruz is nice. Hyperlite's old stomping grounds - maybe he can give a better description of it?

That was a fun ride today at Soquel. Kind of ironic that I was no more daring this time around, even with the elbow / shin guards.

Has anyone here ridden Montara Mountain in Pacifica before? It's the only place outside of Northstar the downhillers seem to ride in these parts. I know where it is, and am familiar with the fireroad up - but I'm looking in particular for the trails called "Boy Scout" and "The Crack".

Also, if anyone knows where "Side O" is in the Berkeley hills, I'd love to get directions so that I can check it out sometime :)

What a shitty ride. My greddy ass was suposed to go to China Camp.. But beacause I woke late I decided to hit Soquel instead. Being my second time there - I had no clue to as which trail to take. No cell phone reception to call up Crash or Whaine either...

So I winged it and ended up taking Ridge Trail all the way down to Saw Pit Trail... *Note for all newbies... DONT TAKE THIS ROUTE... IT SUCKS DONKEY SHIT IF YOU AINT GOT THE SKILLS. I fell 4 times and had to walk down 3 sections. In addition to this... Saw Pit Trail take you to one of the lowest parts of Hinh's Mill Road... which ended up being a total of 5-6 miles back uphill....

Anyhow, the lesson learned today... (1) Plan Ahead and (2) Go with people who know where the hell their going. (I ended up following some HC XC Riders *Big Mistake!)

Only thing I got out of the ride.. was a big whooping and some decent excersice.

*Can't wait to go back. ;-)

I also made a BIG mistake with the WTB Wierwof tires. Those things slide like hell.

I don't recomend these tires. GOing to try the Mitanos or Michelins.

oh, yeah, the pace was totally casual. old fat slow people are welcome. and braille is technical, so old fat slow people are probably amusing.

I know I am...

Anyone here interested on Easton Cabon Fiber Handlebar? This is the EC90 flat bar. I used it twice and decided to go for the monkey lite sl riser bar. I'll sell it for $50.00.

Here is the link:
