The new chain I just got came with a rivet typr master link. Can I replace the master link with a rivet type, or am I screwed? BTW it's a 520 EK x-ring.

Its one or the other.
I highly recommend using the rivet link as opposed to the clip link. Better safe than sorry.
You WILL need a breaker/rivet tool though.

I think what ninja wanted to say it that the chain he jusy got came w/ the clip style master link. Is there any way to remove that link and convert it to a rivet type?

You can buy a new master link at most bike shops, just tell them what type of chain you have.

cycle gear didn't have it for me. i got it mine from zoom on el camino. they have a good stock of rivet links..

I lost a clip to a master link when I had my '95 900RR. I noticed it missing when I was taking a break in Boulder Creek. I rode veerrryy c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y over the hill down to Road Rider.

To make things worse, on the way up 9, an attractive blonde on an F3 evidently wanted to play... :(

Ah I didnt understand the question I suppose :)
Yeah Zoom always comes through with the little parts like that. I always get my chain links from them.

you're probably better off with the rivet type, but if you do go with the clip you can press on the plate with the chain breaker. A good tip that no one told me until I went through about 10+ clips is to put a little RTV on the clip and /or some safety wire.

yup rivet is the way to go, I wont trust that other shit..
i always wondered if this ever happened, ever hear of a chain snaping whipping around and chopping someones leg off?? i ride on the freeway with my left leg out (i dont know why its just comfortable) but sometimes that senario goes through my head and i put my leg back in..

Hey man, now I'm gonna be thinkin' that! It'd probably just drop on the freeway, but I guess it could get bunched at the front sprocket cover and whip your leg at speed:eek

Well lets hope it holds, I just used a little dab of RVT.

How much is a rivet set? The clips are always coming off my chain and I have to replace them constantly. I'm about due for a chain and was just gonna have the shop put on a chain w/ a rivet link but if it's not too expensive I might do it myself.

youll need a chain breaker tool, they run between 80 to 150 bux....

I bought my Motion Pro at Raber's Part's Mart acouple years ago for I think about <$25. Hey, Cycle Gear has them on sale right now for $24.99. Hey, when you're breaking the chain, and pushing the stud through the master link, if you push it from the side that's not mushroomed it make it way easier.

damn, i need to stop going to the shop i go to, every time i get something, everybody seems to get it way cheaper.. was looking at an ohlins rear shock at that place for $1100.00, know of a cheaper place??

I don't know if these Motion Pro's will do rivets, I've never tried. You might need a special rivet tool for chains.

Which ohlins shock specifically? I got one for my R1, but that was the "Lower end" one with a remote preload adjuster and just compression/rebound settings (I think the high end shocks have both low and high speed compression... not sure on that). Oh... it was $1k even through Aftershocks.

R1CHAMP- if you're gonna buy that shock you've got to check out this coupon in the Cycle Gear catalog --20% off any one item!-- it says it's effective from 3.15.02 to 4.15.02. I'll give you mine if you want.

Check out cycle gear, I got my breaker for $25 and the compression tool for $50, both are made by Motion Pro .

Go to SBN and PM a guy named ThunderaceNI. He quoted me 780 for a rear Ohlins shipped.:eek

hey 88/750:.....how would you use safety wire on the chain to hold the clip? i'm very, very curious.......my engineering mentality is taking over!! maybe if you've got a picture of this setup you can post it.

I guess it's pretty simple, but it's got to be tight or the sprocket will cut it off. You just wrap it around both the clip and the plate with the tie on the outside. Maybe a little towards the rear of the link?:burnout

RTV alone works for me.

I don't suggest anybody trying to use safety wire on their masterlink, that's for sure! Even if the saftey wire did hold up to all the punishment, it would definitely ruin your sprockets, especially if you're running an aluminum rear.

Anybody else ever heard/seen/done this??

ninja_rydr

A few guys from SB.N suggested doing that for me.

actually, I was just looking at my chain (a 530) and there is a ton a room in there for safety wire, right in the center. I dont know how a sprocket could cut it off, but maybe it might somehow. Still a dab of goo is all I need. I still don't know how they fly off in the first place, they snap-on pretty tight.:burnout

Shop did this to my bike once. Wire was MIA within about 500 miles.

ya know, that chain is slappin' back-and-forth, up-and-down, side-to-side. sooner or later that safety wire is going "bye bye."

I don't know how the clip-on master link would come off, either. I've ridden dirt bikes for more than 10 years and used only the clip-on master link. I NEVER had one come off. Apparently others have, and just the fact of knowing that it could happen scares me. So, I went a bought a MotionPro chain breaker/riveter kit. Nowadays I use only the riveted master link.

O.K. guys who's gonna tie one on for the official B.A.R.F. safety-wire-on-the-master-link endurance test? I'd do it, but I've got no wire or wire tool. :nerd
