Bombshell: Laconi, Bostrom and Lanzi To Team For VIR
by dean adams

Rumors have circulated all week that Ducati Corse World Superbike rider Regis Laconi will race the final AMA Superbike round at VIR.

A quick call to Ducati Corse confirmed the rumor.

"We just decided that this will indeed happen," said Ducati Corse Superbike Director Paolo Ciabatti this morning. "Regis, Eric and Lorenzo Lanzi will ride at VIR. It's something we want to do for our fans in the US, as the season we have had hasn't been what we wanted."

All three riders will roll on Michelin tires with Laconi--who uses Pirelli rubber in WSC--testing Michelins next Monday at Magny-Cours.

Many more rumors here: http://www.600rr.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=221220#221220

that EBoz will be riding a full factory 999 in WSB next year

Sebastian Charpentier, has been signed to replace Karl Muggeridge

Neil Hodgson may race a 999 in AMA next year

Chris Walker may leave Foggy petronas for PSG-1 who are running ZX-10's

Ben Bostrom has been signed by Klaffi Honda, to race a CBR100RR in WSB next year.

The Bostroms back in WSBK! That's what I'm talking about.
And Regis is goona get his ass handed to him at VIR.

I think the Regis thing is a done deal. I wonder how he will do on Michelins after he's been running on Pirelli's all summer....

:confused i know superbike planet prides itself on having the scoup before anyone else, but this just doesn't make sense to me. why would regis consider racing at VIR the week following his finale? ducati must really want to go out with a bang if this is in fact true.

Ducati probably want to determine where the problem with the lack of success lies with their bike in the AMA series. Bringing in another rider suggests that they think the problem is between the handlebars and the tail.

Didn't Eric B. already do a "find out if it's the rider" test in Italy this year?

I doubt that Ducati has really considered the possible downside of this plan. I'm sure that they're thinking that if Laconi kicks butt over here then it will show that Ducati's are the best bikes which would translate into more sales in the US.

But. If he ends up not making a good show of it, then it will prove that the restrictions put on the inline bikes by WSB are what really gives Ducati the edge in that series and they are actually inferior race bikes. This could have an impact on their sales in a direction that they wouldn't want to see.

Why would Laconi ride at VIR? Well if you read the article the folks at Ducati say:

"It's something we want to do for our fans in the US, as the season we have had hasn't been what we wanted."

I think that's pretty f*ckin cool.

all you have to do is compare the lap times of the WSBK riders to the AMA riders at Laguna Seca this year. this does not tell all though because the AMA riders are more familiar with the track than the WSBK riders but even taking that into consideration i still think that the AMA guys are going to kick their butts at VIR.

I don;t know if that is a fair comparison, as this is WSBK first year on Pirelli's, thus lap times were expected to be slower and were. I think the lap record holder at Laguna for qualifying is still Bayliss and fastest race time, I think is still Corser....but I haven't checked in quite a while.

As for Laconi....I think its great that he's coming, regardless if he does well or not. I really don't expect him to do all that well, as he's never been to VIR. But if Fonzi and Laconi do better than Eboz.....trouble for Eboz.

They announced it on Two Wheel Tuesday so it must be true!
