The trip ran 4 weeks, but the trail shown in the first photo took only 2, going at a fairly leisurely pace. We didn't start right at the border, but went from Grants NM instead. The ride through Monument Valley and Valley of the Gods on the way to the starting point was simply amazing. We got there at the perfect time of day, and the weather couldn't have been better! It was also the first taste of dirt and sand my friend and I sampled outside of Doc Wong's clinic. Thanks Doc!! It was also the first time we had to pick up a fully loaded GS with 120lbs of gear in the sand in 100 degree weather. Sand sucks. Hard. In a bad way.
Ride report? Unfortunately no. I'm not really a documentation type of guy. Even the pictures were a bit of an after thought. I'll do better next time, now that I know how to better plan my next long trip.
209ninja, it's the Continental Divide Trail. You can find the tracks on AdvRider, and you can order the bicycle maps online. I modified BigDog's GPS tracks for more gas stops, but it was unnecessary. The GS got better mileage than we expected, especially in the dirt, and we never had to use our reserve fuel canisters... well, we did give gas away to a pair of lost dirt riders in NM for some good karma. I'm actually thinking of trying the Trans America and Pacific Coast trails on the GS now. That will be an adventure!
WoodsChick, the Butterfly was mine. I loved it, even when inebriated.

Packs so small, and was very comfortable. It was a tough decision on whether to bring the Kermit or Butterfly chair, but I think I made the right one. The Kermit is now gathering dust in a corner somewhere.
Thanks all for the compliments! This is proof that you can Adventure Ride without any real dirt experience. We got the basics from Doc and learned the rest on along the way. My biggest piece of advice? When you see a big boudler ahead, go another way. Those crashbars took a BEATING and had to be replaced half way through the ride. Even so, the GS handled everything we threw at it without a hiccup. This bike's a keeper!
