Why Come to a Horizons Unlimited Motorcycle Travelers Meeting? You can meet people who don't think you're crazy for wanting to ride your bike to South America or Africa or across Asia, or even around the world! Admit it, all your 'normal' friends and most of your family fears for your sanity! So, this is your opportunity to meet the people who will encourage you in that craziness, share their experiences and advice on how to do it, and maybe you'll meet them again in Mongolia or Timbuktu!

There will be travelers from all over the world attending the meeting, with slide shows and seminars on everything from tire changing to HOW TO do a RTW trip, inspirational stories on travelers trips, and much more! This is your best opportunity to find out what it takes to get out of the rut, meet travelers and see what this long distance travel stuff is all about. Join us for a great time, lots of opportunity to exchange information, have a chat with those who’ve been there, lived to tell the story, and are planning on going back!

With the new - more convenient location, we're expecting a full house - so don't procrastinate!

Looks like a drive-by ...

Well, it is a travelers meeting, after all. Last year's meeting was in Petrolia, CA, which is about 250mi. north of San Francisco, out in the sticks. This locale is meant to be more accessible.

I think I will try to make it this year, I went to the first one in Petrolia and it was a blast.

Which reminds me....I think it is time to have another Horizons Unlimited Zeitgeist night soon. Are you on the HU San Francisco Community mailing list, Replicant?

I am not... that is a one-day meetup, correct? I vaguely remember seeing something about it, but didn't find anything doing a search just now.

Go to the Horizons Unlimited page and sign up for the San Francisco Community. It is under the "Community" section of the website. It is kind of a mailing list for moto travelers who come to SF and have questions about the area, etc. The website will tell you more. But we also use it to get together every so often for a night of beer at Zeitgeist bar in SF. It is a good way to meet up with other world moto travelers locally.

Wow Dave. You're just everywhere aren't you? Send out the word and I'll see you at Zeitgeist!

Clement Salvadori Speaks

Author, photographer and Rider Magazine contributor Clement Salvadori will be speaking at this years Horizons Unlimited California Traveler’s Meeting.

Clement's first trip of minor note was between junior and senior years at high school, when he and a friend took an NSU 250 and BMW R26 around much of western Europe. A year later he sold his NSU, bought a very used '51 Indian Chief and rode off to college. In '73 he was working at the US Embassy in Rome, decided to disemploy himself, and spent the next two years riding around the world, taking the Hippie Highway to Kathmandu, then Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Panama. For the past 30 years he has been filling blank pages in the moto-mags, and in between times taking little trips, like across Tibet, around Brazil, or along the U.S. Continental Divide from Canada to Mexico. He has said of the Continental Divide trip,

“This was the best ride I have ever taken on the North American Continent. I’ve motorcycled from Alaska to Panama, from Nova Scotia to Baja California, and this trip topped them all.”

Clem will recount the trip accompanied by his slide show, and answer your questions.
Here’s a chance to get the first hand scoop on one of the great American adventure rides.

Dr. Greg Frazier - 'Sun Chasing' in California

The HU California Travelers meeting is proud to host Dr. Gregory W. Frazier, recognized as “America’s #1 extreme adventure rider.” He has circumnavigated the globe five times, literally riding a myriad of motorcycles to the ends of the earth. After 1,000,000 miles of riding and racing motorcycles, he says, “I’ve not been to Everywhere, but as long as I am still roaming the globe it’s just over the horizon.”

Dr. Greg will present SUN CHASING: RIDING THE WORLD, a documentary film of Dr. Gregory W. Frazier’s five circumnavigations of the world by motorcycle, four times solo and once with a pillion. The film is narrated live by “Dr. Greg,” and filled with tips, tricks and entertaining tales of his adventures and misadventures piloting a wide range of motorcycles ranging from BMW to Kawasaki to Harley-Davidson, with a 1947 Indian Chief and Amazonas thrown into the mix.

For all the details visit the meeting page.

Don't miss this opportunity to spend a weekend on the beautiful Central Coast and meet one of the true legends of adventure travel.

Get Your Dirt On

Here's a heads up for anyone who could use a little dual sport riding tune-up (for the rider, not the bike)

Bonnie and Andrea from Coach2Ride in San Diego County are offering a Dual Sport Clinic for folks going to the HU Travelers Meeting.

When: Friday Oct 14
Where: Pozo/La Panza OHV area (about 60 mi east of the meeting location - take the clinic in the morning, then ride to the coast for the meeting in the afternoon)

This is an opportunity to get off-road experience and instruction on your own bike - and it's a bargain at $60.
My wife and I and several friends took a Coach2Ride off road class in December. Bonnie and Andrea are great people, and do a terrific job. We all had a day we'll never forget, improved our riding skills and gained confidence in our off road riding.

Check out the details on the C2R/HU clinic page.

(The clinic is only open to people who have signed up for the meeting in Cambria, and is limited to 16 riders).

If you have not seen the list of speakers for the meeting recently - it's AMAZING! Have a look here.

Been wanting to make one of these meets but this one is in conflict with the Quincy ride.

Any other BARFers going? I'll be riding down Thursday because I'm an event volunteer ("gatekeeper") and will be there through cleanup on Sunday. Taking the coast road down just because. If you do go, make sure to say hi! I'll prolly be the only one on a red CBR600 with lower fairings removed and an ADV sticker. :) Direct e-mail is CB160racer@yahoo.com .

Been seriously thinking about doing this event. My friends from RKA luggage are going and clued me into this a bit ago. Still Leary though as a zx6r isn't exactly a good dual sport but I sport tour on it all the time. Hmm...

Seriously, don't let that stop you! I'll attach a photo of the bike I rode to last year's HUBB meeting, which involved some short sections of busted-up pavement and even sandy dirt. It's a bone-stock Ninja 250 with stock street tires at highway pressure, and as you can see it was pretty well loaded up with camping gear! The roads this year are far better. I'm riding my CBR 600 F4, with the same Sport Pilots I run at track days.

If you elect to stay in a bunkhouse, you won't have to carry a tent (but you will need a sleeping bag). And if you go with the meal option, you won't have to bring food or cooking gear. You could prolly carry all you need on that ZX6 in a tank bag and backpack! Hope to see you there.

CBR600 in adventure mode

Here's my CBR as I was leaving for Overland Expo in Tucson last year. It's amazing how much stuff you can carry on a sportbike! For that trip I was set up for self-contained camping for a week. The HUBB meeting will require much less stuff.
