The Wrecking Crew
That's right boys and girls. It happened around 7:00 am on HWY 29 north in American Canyon. It was a perfect storm involving me, a semi truck, and the car that darted into my exit spot. The truck hit me and the SV squarely on the right side, sending us skidding and bouncing into oncoming traffic.
I AM OK!!!
I'm rattled, to say the least...but I don't think I'm half as freaked out as the guy who hit me. As soon as I stood up he started hugging me (quite a nice fellow really). He said he never saw me, or had a chance to break before he hit me.
Nothing is broken. I would like to thank Sidi Vertigo, Alpinestars, and Suomy for saving my body and my brain. My hand was crushed under the bike and I am now missing a mysterious portion of my left middle finger. (I can still flip people off though, if I am so inclined.) My right leg and foot are pretty banged up, but not broken. The SV is pretty thrashed, but he's straight and so it's just a matter getting him all back together. I'll go to the shop and get some pictures tomorrow.
I've had several moments of clarity throughout the day regarding personal happiness and priorities. I was extremely lucky, and that's an under statement. I've also realized that for me, riding is not JUST riding. It's my life. I need my body and my bike better so that I can get back on. I have a track day on the 6th and nothing about what happened today made me think for one second that I didn't still want to go.
I hate that it had to happen, but I have gotten a lot from this experience already. Really, as hokey as it sounds; nothing puts your head in check like a good bounce on the pavement and a close look at the grill of a semi truck.
Thank you, Universe, for not killing me today.
