how about riding from alum rock rd, mt hamilton rd (hwy 130), del puerto canyon rd, sperry ave and then to patterson, has anyone have any experience riding this route?

With all the rains we've been having I would be surprised if any parts of Del Puerto are in rideable condition.

How much experience do you have and what are you riding?

Del Puerto is fine, was just out there a few days ago. Mt. Hamilton is the one to watch out for right now. About a mile in either direction from the observatory is littered with grey sand due to the snow awhile back, and it can be quite slippery (and surprising).

I drive and ride that route all the time. What kind of info are you looking for?
There's three main sections:
  • up to Hamilton (and down into the valley)
  • out to the Junction (on the valley floor)
  • Junction to Patterson (Del Puerto Road)
Personally, I'm not a fan of the first part. Roads are steep, narrow, and twisty; and between SJ and the top, you'll find the most traffic (read: coming the other way on your side).
The second part is great, but short.
The third part is my favorite road for 100 miles in any direction.
If I'm riding purely for pleasure, I usually choose to go out to Mines Road (to the Junction, to Del Puerto).

Don't forget to take a spin on Diablo Grande Road while you're out there.

I was on del puerto to patterson last saturday and even on a motard there is some slippery gravel in most coners. Be careful if you heading out there

When are you planning to ride it?

Looks like conditions are getting good for a run to patterson!

Leaving San Jose, Capitol/Tully Starbucks map at 10AM. Up Quimby to Hamilton, to Del Puerto, to 5, gas, back up Del Puerto, lunch @ Junction, Mines, Calaveras, back, to SJ.

157 miles, 6:17 according to Map Source.

I think this understates the current condition of Del Puerto (rode it today). It is worse than I've ever seen it. It's like they chip-sealed three weeks ago (which probably isn't the case, but that's how much loose gravel there is). East of Frank Raines, there was a three(?) mile stretch that was just plain bad. I'm going to give it a couple weeks before going back.

What is your take, Alan?

Glad you guys got through OK. Did Tom's bike make it on the awesome 2.0 gallon touring tank? :laughing

Thanks. Tom ended up getting like 50 mpg, so the tank size didn't turn out to be an issue. Good to meet you, c61.

I thought it was in pretty good shape actually, although admittedly I am pretty damn slow on my KLR with knobbies so maybe I'm just processing the hazards easier. Seemed like it was in as good a shape as the summer Del Puerto runs we used to run in the past. Gravel in a lot of the turns east of FR, as you said, but there's always been gravel there every time I go there.

I had issues with the sand on Hamilton, and the dirt on the outsides of the turns on the backside (San Antonio) but Del Puerto and Mines were in pretty good shape. I went with Luckett and Olhogrider and they were hauling ass out there like it was nothing.

A couple of pics from Hamilton.
