As most of us are aware of, Eric Arnold, AFM #235 was badly injured in the Open SuperBike race a few weeks ago (April 26th). He does have health insurance, so that is the good news, the bad news is that the extent of his injuries is quite serious and he can easily blow through the limits of his policies. I guess its the nature of these traumatic spinal injuries.

The accident/race incident/whatever: Eric was on row 4, P15 in the OSB race, we both decided to do BW to get decent gridding at Infineoen--it worked. I was gridded a few rows in front of Eric, so I didnt know anything happened until he didnt show up in T7 when they were holding us.

Eric got knocked down on the start and his body - namely his lower back - was run over by 500lbs of bike/rider at speed. It was a racing incident, Eric has NO hard feelings towards any other racers or the AFM, he actually insisted on speaking to Barb about 5 days after the incident and 2 days after 16 hours of surgery to reassure her he had no ill feeeling towrds her or the AFM ie they were "cool".

His Injuries: Although his spinal cord is NOT severed, his vertebrae, L1, T12, T12 were basically pulverized from the impact of the racebike tire(s) and left his spinal cord severly "compressed". The neurosurgeon said he'd never seen anything as intense as Erics spinal injury--and the Doc is working at a major tramua center and has seen alot.

Eric has no feeling or sensation/strength from approximately his navel down. His tailbone also svered his cerical(??) artery (ass artery) and thas why he lost 4 units of blood at the scene. He said, while laying on the ground, he felt the MOST intense pain he has very felt, his legs felt like they were on fire, before they went numb. He tore up some ribs and punctured a lung as well, all too common in "race incidents".

His Recovery: Unfortunately, according to the nuerosurgical "experts" there is a very low probability that Eric will ever walk again, but miracles DO happen, and anyone that knows Eric knows how hard he will work for one.

He is currently at Valley Med, but it seems two month rehab stint there will be delayed for two more months, as his ass-artery surgery didnt heal as planned, and rehab requires alot of sittin/dragging ass--not so good with an open wound and NO feeling. So it looks like he'll be going to a recovery nursing home for two month whilst his ass surgery heals--hopefully it will be in Los Gatos, close to me, many of his friends.

Then its back to Valley Med for 2 months of intense physical rehab learning to get in/out of a wheel chair, chair, bed, shower, etc-- time his bowel/bladder movements all that fun stuff.

Then he will probably be staying with me and my family (the wife is a stay at home mom for my two daughters-kate-3, Samantha-1) and/or one of his other close buddies in the Campbell/Los Gatos Area. this is good as its the core of his support group. Hopefully somewhere along the line he will become mobile in his wheelchair and hand controlled vehicle. and go back to work in IT.

So many have asked "What they can do to help?"

Visiting was very limited until now as there was a very real fear of a serious infection, and Eric was heavily sedated. That has now changed dramatically Eric is still on oral pain meds, but relatively light compared to the constant drip morphine he was on at Santa Rosa. He is very alert/chatty and basically the same old Eric--Me and our friend Kathy visited him for about 4 hours tonight. heres some of his thoughts:

1) He thinks my new bootz are really gay(see below) and think sI should be prohibited from Helimot whilst on pain meds (doesnt say that on the bottle--yeah I walked to Helimots--pffft)--right Dave, Craig, Chris??....:rofl:rofl

2) He fully understands and accepts that his life has changed dramatically--he wants to get as healed as he can and learn how to cope and contribute--the accceptance will be a process and will be fraught with hope, disappointment, frustration and a bunch of other stuff.

3) In his words he needs "to prepare for the worst and hope for the best" and he will work his ass of for any minor miracle

4) He is still alot more concerned about others than himself--same old Eric

5) In the past only gave help and never wanted/asked for it. Now he knows hes going to need to accept it, for Eric: its humbling--but its also very good for him to let friends/fellow racers/colleauges demonstrate their love/appreciation for him

6) Ive learned a while ago, that doing the giving really puts "the giver" in touch with what lifes all about and whats important and whats not. Same thing that makes us "crazy racers" to tightly bound to one another. Outsiders dont get it--must suck

So Again What Can We Do??

So by approximately this Monday, May 18th

1) When he gets settled in the "nursing home" (hopefully in Los Gatos) come see him--Ill provide the address when I get it
2) Call him if you have his cell number, if you need it and it makes sense, PM me
3) I'll also post the address for cards/other

And finally (you all knew "this" was coming)--Any financial assistance via his paypal account ericarnoldrecoveryfund@gmail.com would be greatly appreciated.

Cash or cheques (made out to The EA235 Fund) can be given to myself, Kathy Kuwaye, Sveta, Lance Kiegwin and they will work their way into his recovery fund. Just think how much good race karma you can bank, I know I need a bunch.

Eric is basically living thru most of our worst fears as racers, husbands, fathers, etc. He will be posting progress reports here on the BARF RC as he feels it will be of interest--we can all get really in touch with our deepest fears--which usually aint that big of a deal once outside our heads. Regardless, he will keep in touch with us all as soon as we get him hooked up with a PC (prolly two days)

Thanks for listening..see ghey boots at bottom--they kind of match my bruised ass. :rofl:rofl:rofl

I had a long chat with Eric this afternoon. I have to honestly say he is stronger than most of us hope we could be in that situation. A freak accident like his could happen to any one of us (street or track) but you can tell Eric just doesn't back down from a setback. We were already talking about shifter karts and murderball (wheelchair rugby), so that just goes to show what a rockstar Eric really is! Ironically, he seemed more concerned about the bs I'm dealing with these days, but that seemed so trivial in comparison...

I actually forgot to talk to him about the pitbike races we will have as a fundraiser for him later this year, but I'll bet you he will work as hard as he possibly can in rehab so that he can be out there to watch his friends goof off on pitbikes.

alley cat pitbike races for fundraising? Great idea pm in on that one... :) Get well fast Eric forget what docs say!!

I will talk to my husband tonight about changing our fundraising focus this year. We always do something to give back to the community, even if it is not much. Since we will not be doing the Cool Tie Fundraiser for the AFM Airfence, I thought that maybe we can raise some money for Eric instead.

I will try to get permission from the trackday providers that I work with and sell them this summer. As always, 50% of each cool tie sold will go to the EA#235 Fund, while the other portion goes to cover our materials and labor costs. We make each cool tie from scratch, and they are very time consuming labor-wise.

I will also donate 5% of my proceeds from any trackday that I provide massage at. I wish it could be more, but finances are extremely tight for me right now.

Eric, if you are reading this, I wanted to let you know that I put your EA #235 sticker on my massage table this week, and every time I do some work on someone, I send some of that healing energy your way. I have had several racers at the AMA event ask why your number is there, and I tell them your story. I tell them about your recovery fund, and a few of them said they would kick in a little bit to help out.

You are missed my dear. Sent a note to a huge group of my fellow fibers artists to ask for even more healing mojo to be sent your way as well. These folks can kick butt!

Jeff, are there any medecaid issues/ conflict this may cause in the future or assistance issues due to the income? I'm guessing the donations are set up so their insulated from a taxable basis? If not, can the benevolent fund be of assistance? I certainly wouldn't want to put Eric in a tax disadvantage position if we can use the benevolent fund to shield that.

Odd... this was all covered at the board meeting you and I were at last week--I really wonder why you are polluting this thread with this. Yes everything is set up correctly per some of the best accountants/estate planners in the country--thanks for asking.

Thanks Jeff! That's a combination question I was asked by two different BARF'ers. I did not know the answers; figured others may be holding back funding if they had the same questions as these were. No pollution of anything, just postulating the use of the Benevolent fund as well, if it would help. Anyway, thanks for the response man!

:cool PayPal donation sent... wish I could do more, yet it all adds up.

Hope others send what they can as well, along with helpful healing thoughts. :)

:love,

Trackho, thanks for the update on Eric, paypal funds sent :thumbup Wish I could send more but unemployment sucks :(

Eric, my dear Eric, my thoughts and prayers have been with you since learning of this incident, and I sincerely hope that your recovery is full and swift. You are one of the most kind hearted and generous people I know, suffering long hours of my tears and tantrums at trackdays with nary a blink of an eye nor a hint of criticism. If there is anything, anything I can do to help with your recovery, it would be an honour to assist.

Love
Wendy

Dropped my donation in Jeff's bucket yesterday.. hope it will help in a very tough time.

Life has challenges and 1 big one is here for Eric.

A little help from others can make a big difference. I hope other barfers will take a step forward to meet the challenge in any way you can.

:smoking

Lana put the bucket on the table by the blood drive booth!

People are paying big bucks for those EA235 stickers. :thumbup

DON'T BE SHY. GET OFF YOU BUTTS AND GET DOWN THERE AND GIVE HIM A CHAT!!! HE'D LOVE TO SEE ALL HIS FRIENDS AND FELLOWS RACERS!!!

He's got his head screwed on strong and straight, which should be no surprise to all you friends of his.
Keep in mind:
1) He's in a big house that's for spinal and head injury rehab. Its a very nice place. More like a B&B then a hospital environment.
2) Respect the time if he's looking a bit tired. He'd like visits between 1:30-4 and 6-8:30. 10PM is official closing time. This way he can take care of business and stay well rested. (Thats why he's there for the next month or two.)
3) He's got 15 books now, so pick new ones wisely.
4) Candy and baked goods are yummy, but he should only eat a few and the rest will go to share with the other guests and nurse staff.
5) He has a VCR (maybe DVD), so maybe some good movies would be nice.
6) He's checking his emails and the board banter when he can.

I have a pretty nice family van that's just sitting around that would be perfect for a wheel chair set up if you need it Eric? It's one of those big ones with the tv and vcr in it that are usually retrofitted for this kind of thing. I know what it feels like to not know what the future holds but just know that all of us are here to help out when the need arrives!!!

Best of Luck to you Eric

I used to work in the medical industry and one of the more disagreeable issues with an injury such as yours is bed sores. They're brutally expensive to remove and although I'm sure it's well known now, I felt compelled to share: There is a mattress called "Pegasus" that is used the most critical care hospitals in the U.S. and it will prevent bed sores. There may have been advances but it's something you may wish to check into. Between myself, Scott Lavelle and a few others who have done the helicopter ride but came out of it a bit more intact, I can speak for all of us and say we wish you the best. I certainly do. We may have met before. I noted that you're an instructor with KATT as well. I did the Laguna day with with them in 2005. I had the silver R1 whose battery died immediately after pulling it out of the truck! :wtf:|:mad Ah well, a half day was still fun, thanks to a hot date the next day.:teeth Best wishes.
