New Tire Ride (Lake Berryessa)

UPDATE: There's also a New Tire Ride II thread that I posted in July 2011.

Put a new rear tire on my Weestrom this morning. Well actually I put the wheel on - the dealer mounted the tire, a Battle Wing.

So naturally I have to take a spin to break it in. Where to go? Twisties are definitely in order so I played around with Google Maps and decided to try this trip up to and around Berryessa:

Wooden Valley is a nice road, and 121 is where the fun really begins:

Now shortly after that pic was taken, I came across a girl with her green Ninja on the side of the road. I gave the thumbs-up-thumbs-down query. She gave the wobbly-hand response. I pulled over, removed helmet and earplugs, she was very quiet and nervous, I looked things over. Obviously she'd taken a spill on the left side: scraped handlebar end and clutch lever. She did not appear to be hurt; the big problem was the shifter was bent completely around in a circle. Not being Superman, I was not able to bend it back. The bike was unrideable.

She was trying to call her husband but there was no cell service in this section of road. I offered to give her a ride somewhere, or to call the husband when I was in range. She says no, she can text him(!!), and declined all offers of help. Either I was too scary of she was not thinking very clearly, so I went on my way and 3 1/2 miles up the road stopped at the Crossroads and asked the guy there to send a local fire or police person to give her a hand. He seemed to know exactly what to do, and I got back to my ride.

And yes, she was hawt.

The Crossroads:

From Berryessa Knoxville Road:

The North end of the lake:

East Side Road is not paved.

Very pretty farm land here.

There was either an elk or a very large deer sitting in the road right here that I scared off. Does Berryessa have elk?

Uh-oh.

Crap. So much for my carefully planned route. There was nothing to do but turn around and go back the way I came.

Which also means I passed the site of the Ninja babe again. She and the bike were gone, so it looks like help arrived.

Mission accomplished.

Shit, that's my friend Marina. Not thinking clearly is my professional opinion. We've gone on about gear, proper bike choice, proper riding location choice etc... At least she wore decent gear. Thanks for trying to help her out. Where are the pictures? No one is going to believe you that she is hot. I sure don't and I know her hehehe... ok, I just lied about that. She did get home. I talked to her after she was back in cell range.

The rest of your story is great.

I really wanted to take her picture, but somehow didn't think it would go over very well.

I've ridden Berryessa for 35 years and didn't know about the east side road.
Is it usually open? Or is it a private road?

That's the first time I've been on it, but I guess it's usually open. Here's the sign as you enter:

It's possible that she could still txt message her hubby. With my AT&T phone I may not have signal, but I can still txt at times (or web surf... )

A text takes very little bandwidth, so it makes sense that one could get through where the connection is too poor for voice. But in this case there was no connectivity at all (i.e. "searching for signal...").

I did see some boating going on, and it appears there are various boat and jet ski rentals available. More info here.
