Few weeks ago a buddy had the frame on his FZ1 brake at the welds on both sides while we were riding. Luckly we were on a tight road and speeds were really low.
Anyway looking in to it , seems there was a serious issue with the first year of the fuel injected Fz1 frames. Over 30 cases of craked frames reported on the FZ1 forums.
If you have an 06 or early 07 FZ1 do yourself a favor and check your frame. My buddy had no ideea this was an issue till it happened to him.
Also if it happened to you or somebody you know well, let me know please.

Me too

My 07 FZ1 frame cracked on the main weld on the right side of the frame. it is only a hairline crack and only on that side, not even close to being the mess on your buddies bike. I took it to my local shop that said they would weld it for around $1k. I got a second opinion from AlanRider7 of Sportbike Dynamics and he said he wouldn't touch the thing. told me to call Yamaha and have them replace it. I called right away, they first said no help. then asked me to be on hold and then said the bike is 5 years old, 48 months out of warranty but would have an authorized dealer look at it and they would pay for it with no promises. I took it to G&B in Petaluma. they checked out my bike and said everything was straight, rims, rotors even the frame. told me to call back in a couple of days, i did. Yamaha said it would replace the frame, other parts that would need to go with the replacement and all labor. I got a confirmation call from Yamaha a few day after that and the frame will be LA on August 10th. One or two days to G&B and then a few days to install.

If your buddy need more specific info, PM me and I will give you guys the names of those I have spoken with at Yamaha, they were real cool and nice through all this too. I feel very fortunate and can't wait to ride.
Does your friend live locally?
I sure would like to make sure he gets the same treatment that I did.
Dino

Damn dino, you need to get yamaha to payout all the pain and suffering your getting for not being able to ride your bike for like a month+ :laughing

Will the supply a glue on reinforcement patch like Suzuki did with the K5?
That would but my mind at ease.

Must feel very strange riding down the road like that! Did he say how it effected handling?
I have one but it looks fine.

Started small

The crack on my frame started out as a very small and unnoticeable hairline crack. It was noticed by a fellow rider (MadEnglishCow) while on a group ride and resting at the Skaggs bridge, if gone not noticed it would undoubtedly turn into the pic on the first post.

Paging Gerry Piazza.....?

Thank you Dino, it is exactly what I was hoping to see from this thread. You got PM

Paging Gerry Piazza.....?

It would be extraordinarily foolish to attempt to fix this type of problem on your own. You shouldn't try to make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

There is obviously some sort of production and/or material defect issue(s) causing quite a few frame failures on this model. It's not an isolated incident. This could be caused by any number of issues such as improper design, poor casting quality controls, shit materials, bad welding, substandard or faulty heat treating and/or optimization of materials, etc or a combination of any one of these or other variables.

The fact that Yamaha is acknowledging and fixing these is a quasi-admission they know they fucked up.

Trying to weld it opens up the possibilty of another failure worse than the first. This is where the lawyers come in.

Yep Sir

Picz or it didn't happen. :twofinger

I couldn't believe it how they were real nice and helpful, even gave me a follow up call to confirm they were standing by their product, but I was nice to them too, not being a prick paid off.

I can't wait for the frame to arrive so I can ride but Yamaha pulled through.
Carolyn noticed it on the last ride we were on. she saw it while we were waiting on the Skaggs bridge.

Glad you got it addressed by yamaha, still think you shoulda bought the r1 and do the lsl highbar swap, its actually a common mod over on the r1 forum

Props to Alan here. Sometimes having a real rabble rouser on your side helps.

Will spot dodgy welds for beer...

Yikes that broken frame photo OP posted!

Really glad you pursued Yamaha and they're doing the right thing Dino, once you got some good advice from Alan :thumbup

Just think, another shop would have taken your 1k and attempted to fix the weld :jaded
