Here's the poll for this thread:

http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=435617

I think this is the right list. If I excluded your bike, I'm sorry! It's a pretty fricken' good list, anyway. I did have to combine some stuff so it wouldn't get too long. If we have to debate which GSXR600 is best, for instance, we can do that if that category wins.

Some rules:

-The bike has to have been introduced for the 1998-2004 model years
-There has to be a good supply of decent bikes
-Pricing has to be below $4000 for middleweights, $5000 for literbikes
-SV650 is already in there, so relax.
-"Turbo Busa" is not included because we all know it is made of win and would be unfair.

Gabe,

there's a LOT of room between an SV & a RC51 & a ZX-10......

Tuono Joice has 2 'prillers out in the garage - they're BEASTS compared to her SV........

Sure, but what's the best value is what the story will be about. I got my SV for $1500...what kind of Tuono would you get for that? In any case, we're going to have at least 4 bikes in the story, so we can explore all that room.

This doesn't make sense. Without a price, how do you determine the best value?

I would own any of those bikes, for the right price.

Ummmmm. Some of those are not sport bikes.... so. Since you dont know motorcycles.... get a scooter and take MSF. When you learn to ride get a busa ya wuss!!!!!:twofinger

If it's all about best value, the RSV1000 wins. Just such a unique and beautiful machine going for pennies on the dollar. However, the earlier question was how much of a modern sportbike performance could you get for half the price from an older sportbike - if it's about pure performance, I would have voted for the 2nd Gen R1 (2004-5) and 2nd Gen R6 (2003-5). Not quite as much sex and character a the Italian, but both capable of running with superbikes and superports, respectively, from this decade.

Man, so many different types of bikes in that poll........Some comfortable, some not at all.

I agree that Aprilias are good values, but so are used Audis, lol. There's a reason for that.....The 2004 RSV I owned had a ton of problems, which I discovered were common with other owners too.

The best values tend to be Kawis and Suzukis. They just aren't in demand as much as Yamis and Honduhs.

K3-K6 Gixxer literbikes are fantastic. Reliable, parts readily available, and just so much fun to ride! :)

Voted 1st/2nd Gen GSX-R1k as my cow-orker has one with 92k on the clock. He bought it as a wrecked track bike. Since then it's been totalled twice and had a chain snap and shear off the water pump. He still rides it 90 miles a day to work. The thing is indestructible.

That being said I'm surprised the humble TL1k didn't make the list. I guess they were never popular but I always thought they were great and under appreciated. As long as you didn't buy a '97.

I'm a little biased, but the F4i is really a great value. For $3k or less you can get one in excellent mechanical and good cosmetic condition. If you can keep the shiny side up, their powertrains have been proven to go over 200k miles with regular maintenance. They also perform up to par with other supersports of that era, even though it doesn't say "RR" on the side

I voted with my heart and would take a 954 on the list simply because of it's all around nature. Power to weight ratio is one of the best Honda has ever produced, and the things are still strong by even today's standards. I love my RC51, but having said that, they're not everyone's cuppa tea. The VTR1000f has the heat issues that the RVT has only worse, and missing too much of the good stuff the R model (especially the SP2) comes with. I'd say the best bang for the buck would be the F4i, and a decent R6 is hard to beat in the mid class. As a do anything daily rider though, hard to beat the VFR for comfort and distance. Depends on what you want to do with it really.

Loved my '97 but didn't offer it up in the other thread because, unlike most if not all the bikes listed here, you had to throw almost $2,000 in suspension upgrades at it to fix everything they did wrong from the factory, (it wasn't just the awful rotary rear damper that was wrong), and then you had to toss a Power Commander onto it to tame the "light switch" stock injection action.

Without those upgrades the bike was horrid...with them it was a great thundering street bike.

I voted for the GSXR 1000 as well as it was "the bike" to have back in the day if you wanted king of the hill status.
