So here is an interesting story. My friend and I attend UOP dental school in San Francisco. The building is located in Pacific Heights, so a fairly nice place to be. The motorcycle parking is awesome because it's free and only a few feet from the entrance, as well as being patrolled and under video surveillance. My friend had just picked up this 2005 CBR600RR with aftermarket repsol bodywork a few months back (his kawi 600 had been hit and totaled while parked, so time for a new bike). At school we park alongside maybe 20-25 other bikes, and in such a high traffic area we felt safe. Well yesterday we were proven wrong. A guy dressed in a varsity-type jacket just walks up, hops on my friends CBR, and uses this tool (see attached photo, the guy left it on the bike) to strip a small amount of insulation from a wire coming out of the ignition. This is around 2:30pm, right on a high foot traffic area!!! The rest is self explanatory (see video). My friend reports it stolen, police call him this morning saying they found it still in the city (I don't remember where) parked on the sidewalk, and get this, with a parking ticket on it! He ran over and picked it up, and the only thing wrong was the little bit of stripped insulation on the wire!!! Lucky!! The one day he didn't use his disk lock or steering stem lock.... Needless to say I will be using my disk lock all the time now, even in the place I thought was very secure.

I've parked there dozens of times when I had appointments. I always felt like it was a pretty safe spot too.

I'm glad your buddy got his bike back with minimal damage.

I don't understand--what's the thief doing on the bike? Why doesn't he just ride away?

I can't believe that guy had sex with your lady in a parking lot (is that rape?). The freaking shame he must feel.... Sexy times is for the garage. That guy should be shot, or get motorcycle AIDS at the very least.

Fucking thieves!

He must have just needed a ride to wherever it was. Probably was real thoughtful and didn't screw things up for your buddy, just being nice about it. Or maybe it was out of gas and he didn't have the gas key?

Why would anybody not at least engage the steering lock when parked anywhere but inside their own garage? It's not like it takes even an extra second to do that.

Nice that the bike was recovered.

WTF was he doing? I felt like I was watching some type of candid camera or something. You need to attach the Benny Hill sound track to that video.

Pro tip: learn how to ride a motorcycle before you try to steal one. That, or just use a van like the smart guys do. :facepalm

I almost couldn't watch the whole thing. Poor bike, freakin thief should have his nuts redeposited into his throat via his ass for that horrible rape scene.
Sorry for your buddy's temp loss, good that it was just a wire to drive home the fact that you ALWAYS lock your ride. And now you know how to hot wire that bike.

Damn, he humped that bike like it was a 16 year old cheerleader.

Glad your buddy got his bike back.

That video was painful to watch on many levels.
Same thing I was thinking. Why would you steal a bike when you can't even move one? He's lucky he didn't kill himself on that thing. His mom would be one of those little old ladies that wants to tell you how her beloved son killed himself on a evil motorcycle.

Okay, I watched the video (on the side while doing something else).

I was thinking, why doesn't he get off of the bike and just pull it back, since he apparently isn't tall enough to back it up while on the bike. Okay, he gets off and that wasn't much better. Then that guy carrying a sack comes along "hey, you need any help stealing that bike?" :laughing

I think your friend was lucky to get the bike back undamaged, because it's surprising that the thief didn't crash the thing. He couldn't possible be an experienced rider.

Somebody should modify that video with little text boxes. It could be quite funny.

Yeah, I'd never ever park my bike anywhere without a disc lock. Especially with all the stolen-bike stories posted here almost every day. Don't make it easy for thieves.
